Background
W.O Bentley founded the company that bears his name back in 1919 and most would agree they manufacture the world’s most sought after and desirable luxury vehicles.
Today over 4,000 dedicated employees beaver away at the Crewe factory building extraordinary cars that have always been designed and built by exceptional people using only the very finest of materials. We were lucky enough to enjoy a recent factory tour, where the attention to detail is quite staggering to behold. Tours are available in normal times and we strongly recommend a visit.
The Bentley Continental GT was launched in 2003 and soon attracted a huge following. Buyers were drawn to its elegant coupe looks, powerful twelve-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive configuration.
It therefore came as no surprise when Bentley announced the Continental Flying Spur, a luxurious four-door saloon with the same underpinnings.
The first Flying Spurs rolled off the production line in 2005 and our car is from the first year of manufacture.
The performance figures for a two and half tonne saloon are simply staggering. Capable of sprinting from 0-62mph in a tad under five seconds, the top speed of 195mph meant that it was the fastest production saloon car in its day.
All-wheel drive ensures that all the power can be deployed without drama, making the Flying Spur a car that can be used with confidence in all conditions, all year round.
Stepping aboard any Flying Spur is a delight, the sense of occasion immeasurable. Firstly, there is the smell of fine leather, the touch of fine wood and the thickness of the luxurious carpets underfoot.
The driving position is commanding and once underway, make no doubt you will be constantly reminded that you are piloting a very special car.
For rear seat passengers, the standard configuration was seats for three. Our car boasts the optional and hugely desirable two seat setup, each seat being individually adjustable for ultimate comfort. The height of luxury and doubtless many of these cars were bought to ferry important passengers around.
