Background

Now back with more work completed (carbs have been tuned and brakes adjusted) making this little Alfa even better and now with a lower reserve!

Few three-box cars are as beautiful as the Giugiaro-designed Alfa Romeo GT Junior. Built between 1963 and 1977, the three-door coupe has one of the nicest interiors ever seen, a throaty, torquey four-cylinder engine, sweet shifting five-speed gearbox, all-round disc brakes, rear-wheel-drive chassis, and perfectly tuned independent suspension. No wonder it was a classic from the moment it was unleashed on an unsuspecting world.

Since then they’ve been used for everything from local shopping to full-bore, top-flight international motorsport and look just as good ticking quietly outside a café as they do storming along an Alpine pass.

  • 70000
  • 1750
  • Manual 5 speed
  • Alfa Rosso Red
  • Black Vinyl

Overview

A catastrophic MOT failure in 2010 (on structural rot, obviously…) was the catalyst for a comprehensive restoration two years later of this genuine right-hand-drive car.

Its many ills were put right at huge expense and it is now a beautiful example of a model that is appreciating rapidly, a predictable state of affairs for all the reasons we mention in our opening paragraph…

Exterior

The bodywork was extensively repaired in 2012 with new sills, floors, cross members, jacking points, and lower wings all being professionally fitted. The car was then resprayed in Alfa Romeo Rosso Red.

Period-correct MAHLE alloy wheels fitted with matching new Goodyear Sport tyres and a pair of huge round, yellow fog lamps finish off the look perfectly.

Interior

The interior benefits from new carpets and door cards that were fitted in 2012, alongside a retrim of the front and rear seats in the correct Alfa Romeo material. The current owner has also replaced the headlining and door seals.

All this work has left it looking just as wonderful as it did when it left Italy back in 1976.

Mechanical

The original 1600cc engine has been replaced with the larger period 1750cc version. This is a common modification, and while it does mean that the car is no longer original, it is now more usable and easily capable of keeping up with motorway traffic, in no small part due to the twin 40 Webers that are a key element of how this car sounds, looks and goes!

To ensure the new owner can get full enjoyment of the car, it will have the carbs setup on a rolling road session before the new owner collects.

The brakes were also fully refurbished during the car’s 2012 restoration, as was the suspension which benefits from uprated components and a recent session to set the alignment. The present owner has also replaced the starter motor with a lightweight race version, fitted a new battery and further overhauled and upgraded the brakes, which are now to Sport specification.

All of this has been thoroughly tested in a shakedown at Castle Combe last week where the owner said the 'geometry was spot on'.

History

The restoration in 2010 is fully documented via a comprehensive photographic record that forms part of the car’s thick history file. To show the extent of the work there are some of these photographs contained in the history below.

A minor accident in 1999 led to the car being recorded as having been written-off. However, it has since been inspected by Autolign on the 16th of November 2015 and has been issued with a ‘Certificate of Inspection and Pass’ confirming that the restoration has put the car back to its original condition.

Summary

Whether you simply want a classic sports coupe to pootle around in on a summer evening or something that could form the base of a very nice period track or racing car, this Alfa Junior fits the bill.

Fans of the marque (and who isn’t?) will know that the price of good 105-series coupes continues to rise, so the guide price of between £18,000 and £20,000 won’t come as too much of a shock.

But then serial car buyers know that the price is what you pay, and value is what you get.

The car can be viewed in near Abingdon in Oxfordshire, to arrange please use the 'Contact Seller' button at the top of the listing. Feel free to ask any questions in the comments or view our frequently asked questions below.
