Background

It's a well known fact that the Italians are renowned for their flair and style and Alfa Romeo have certainly delivered over the years, with some now iconic cars. The Alfa Romeo 105/115 series coupes were designed by well known car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, who at the time was working on his first major project for Italian design house Bertone.

Produced from 1963 to 1977, the 105 and 115 series were based on a shortened floor pan from the Giulia saloon. The GT 1300 Junior was introduced in 1965, and it was fitted with a 1,290 cc twin cam engine which produced 89 bhp. This was quite a low power output compared to some of the other models in Alfa Romeo's range, but it did have a 0-60mph of 12.6 seconds, which was very acceptable for the coupe with a 1300 engine.

In 1968 the GT 1300 Junior was revised by using many parts from its bigger brother, the 1750 GTV. This included the new style dashboard, the dials were mounted to point towards the driver, the suspension was improved and a wider and larger diameter wheel was used. The GT1300 Junior retained the early step front body style. This made it the most mechanically refined step front model produced.

Overview

The dealer who previously owned this Alfa, carried out the importation and registration process in Ireland, and it then went to Southern Ireland into a private collection. The GT Junior was registered as new in Italy in 1972. The car did have a UK MOT carried out upon its arrival from Italy in 2014, the mileage at the time was 24,481. There were some advisories at the time which have been addressed. Since then the car has covered just 2,000 miles, but in that time it has been maintained to an exceptional standard having many parts replaced such as prop shaft, inner wishbone bushes, water pump, anti-roll bar bushes, ignition parts and UK compliant headlights, all of which was carried out by an Alfa specialist in Dublin and also Classic car specialists Arun Cars of Hants.

Having carried out all the work on the mechanical side, the seller's small team have then proceeded to give the Alfa a full restoration and respray in the original dark blue. The restoration has included new door rubbers, window seals, parcel shelf, carpets, pedal rubbers, door hinge repair and new sound deadening material to keep things nice and quiet inside. Basically a well executed restoration on the Alfa making it as well presented as it can be.

Exterior

The classic Alfa GT Junior, as already mentioned, has recently been repainted to freshen everything up. It now looks fantastic in the original dark blue colour with the chrome trim and bumpers to highlight this.

Starting at the front of the Alfa, the chrome work to the bumper is in a nice bright condition. There are a couple of dinks as they are the original bumpers. The classic Alfa six slat grille is in nice condition, which matches the headlight surrounds. The indicators and headlights are free from cracks, and as mentioned, the headlights are now UK compliant.

Around to the sides of the Junior, the classic shape sits proudly and perfectly just as it should, with the door gaps aligning straight and equal. The door mirrors are nice and bright with no corrosion. There is an Alfa Romeo Milano badge fitted to the lower wing section on the passenger side, which is slightly cracked from age. On the drivers side is a Disegno di bertone badge with just some age related marks. The chrome window surrounds are in nice condition, with new rubbers fitted to the front quarter lights ensuring a nice tight fit when closed. The rear opening quarter windows close nice and tight and the chrome trim is, again, in a nice bright condition.

To the rear of the Alfa, the lights look to be the originals and are free from any cracks. The chrome bumper is free from corrosion, but does have a few small dinks. The boot lid has the GT 1300 Junior badge and there is a small mark that unfortunately looks to have happened during transit. The original steel wheels have been repainted silver, with Alfa Romeo stainless steel caps to finish them off. These have been fitted with 185/70 R14 tyres which are in as new condition.

Interior

Inside the Alfa is well presented. As you open the door it takes you straight back to 1972 with the black vinyl seats showing no real signs of wear. The carpets throughout have been replaced and therefore are in excellent condition. A new accelerator pedal has been fitted and new rubbers to the clutch and brake.

Sitting in the driver’s seat, in front of you is a nice wood rim period looking Nardi steering wheel and just behind are the Jager instruments showing an odometer reading of 26,482. The dashboard is finished in black with no cracks and a wood trim facia which is in a nice condition. All the switches are working correctly and as they should. The heater controls do have some slight tarnish to the finish of them. Just below we have the fuel and temperature gauge which are working correctly. The headlining looks to be the original and is nice and clean with no areas sagging. Either side the door cards are finished in black vinyl to match the seats with chrome handles and catches, which are all finished brightly.

In the rear, the back seat is the same as the fronts and in excellent condition. There are seat belts fitted to the rear quarter panels for the front seat passengers. These are not on an inertia reel type seatbelt due to the age of the vehicle. Just behind the rear seat a new parcel shelf has been fitted to finish off the interior. The boot area has also received new carpets, which are fitted to the base and sides of the boot area.

Mechanical

The underside of the Alfa is clean, with no obvious areas for concern. It has been finished with black stone guard to protect it. As mentioned, the Alfa has received a new rear prop shaft section which was fitted at 25,611km at a cost of 442.00 Euros. A further 708.00 Euros has been spent on the anti-roll bar bushes and inner wishbone bushes to ensure everything was as it should be.

The Alfa starts up perfectly with the push of a button (mounted on the steering column), and the raspy little 1300 GT fires into life and sounds just like the italian classic should do. The distinctive sound of twin carburettors are apparent as you blip the throttle you can hear the air being sucked in. There are no untoward noises coming from the engine. As we move the car around it feels nice and tight (thanks to the new bushes), the gear change is smooth and the car comes to a stop nice and straight.

History

With any imported car the history is sometimes a bit hit and miss, if you get any or not, and usually all you can go on is the general condition of the car.

The Alfa has come from a private collection where its been given a fresh coat of paint to freshen it up, along with lots of new parts to ensure it was done right.

There are some odd bits of Italian paperwork that have managed to stay with the Alfa on its journey from Italy. There is Italian declaration of conformity paperwork showing the ownership booklet and the registration document. From 2010 there is paperwork showing an Italian owner. There is also a Irish NCT certificate (Irish MOT) dated 2015, the Irish log book, and some Irish SORN documents. Also, a UK MOT certificate issued on 16th April 2014. This is when the car last held an MOT certificate, it expired on 15th April 2015. A NOVA certificate has also been obtained in readiness for registration here in the UK.

Summary

This 1972 Alfa Romeo 1300 GT Junior has been given a nice head start for its new owner. Repainted, refreshed inside and mechanically sound, there is nothing more to do than jump in the little revvy 1300 GT and enjoy it.

With classic Italian styling that Alfa Romeo has managed to retain over many years, this is one classic that turns heads everywhere it goes. Perfect for heading off to local coffee meets to sit back, relax, chat cars and enjoy your favorite espresso.

We estimate this 1972 Italian classic to reach between £27,000 - £35,000.
