Background

Designed as an ‘entry level’ accompaniment to the brand’s now-legendary 911, the 912 was unveiled in 1965, and featured a 1.6-litre flat-four engine in place of the 911’s six-cylinder unit, narrower bodywork and spritely handling. So good, was the 912, that it initially out-paced 911 sales figures when new!

Unusually, the 912 was also supplied to the Dutch and German police forces in limited numbers, in ‘Targa’ format, or - more specifically - ‘Targa II’ format with the hard rear window and removable roof panel.

These days, the 912 is far from being viewed as the ‘baby’ or ‘entry level’ model in the air-cooled enthusiast circle. With its narrow body and light kerb weight, many enthusiasts cite the 912 as being one of the best-driving (and prettiest) cars to ever wear the iconic Porsche crest.

Interestingly, the 912 also earned itself a place as a firm favourite amongst the Porsche customisation fraternity, with many high-quality custom builds - often referred to as ‘Outlaws’ thanks to Magnus Walker’s influence on the genre - being based upon the 912.

This is just one of those builds, though we’d hazard a guess that it is probably one of the best, if not *the* best one you’ve ever laid eyes on…

Overview

Originally delivered as a left-hand-drive, California car, this particular 912 was imported into the UK in 2013. Following we understand sale by the first owner, the car was purchased by Drew Pritchard Classic Cars (a name we’re sure you’ll be familiar with), who actually completed much of the early restoration. As time moved on and subsequently whilst in the ownership of Type 2 Detectives, a further significant programme of intensive restoration, recommissioning and additional modification was undertaken, which was carried out by marque specialist Carrera Performance.

These works included the following upgrades and modifications, to turn this particular 912 into a true driver’s car, without losing any of the sought-after 912 bodywork lines:

- Original flat-four engine replaced by a rebuilt 3.0-litre flat-six from a 1981 911SC, engine number 6312085

- Fitment of a five-speed 915 transmission

- Front and rear brakes upgraded to more modern Porsche Boxster (2.7) items with four-piston callipers

- Original SWB-type driveshafts modified to fit 915 gearbox

- Fitment of upgraded torsion bars and later-style front shock absorbers with Bilstein inserts

- Stainless-steel exhaust system

- Upgraded front-mount oil cooler fitted, similar to the 1980 3.0sc type

- Original instrument gauges retained, but with upgraded electrical systems to suit the later electronics from the engine conversion

- Full interior and exterior re-spray, carried out to an exacting standard

- Full interior retrim, including new seat covers, dash, carpets, etc

- Upgraded ‘retro style’ radio unit with smartphone connectivity

Whilst the exact mileage of the engine is unknown, the builder (Jez Parsons of Carrera Performance) stated the following: “We replaced the head studs and fitted 204bhp pistons and barrels, checked the valve guides and the bottom end and found both to be very strong.”

First registered here in the UK in 2017 whilst in the care of the vendor, the car has covered less than 1,500 miles since the engine rebuild took place, and has proven itself to be fantastic fun, giving improved performance in a subtle 912 body.

The vendor has also fitted a set of “Magnus Walker” wheels, at a cost of £3,800 plus tyres. The original Fuchs wheels are also available by separate negotiation.

Alongside the above works carried out by Carrera, this 912 has recently had a thorough ‘going over’ carried out by Marque Specialist Parr Porsche of Sussex, with the vendor wanting a specialist with race pedigree to give the car a once-over. This, like all things in the classic car world, quickly escalated to having a number of small issues and quirks rectified, at a cost of over £3,500.

Offering a way into 912 ownership with all the power and performance of a 911 without paying ‘matching numbers’ prices, this one-off 912 Outlaw will certainly turn plenty of heads, and provide the next lucky owner hours of sheer driving pleasure with a fantastic soundtrack to boot.

Exterior

Resplendent in Gunmetal Grey/Silver and looking nothing short of purposeful thanks to its upgraded wheels and tweaked suspension system, this 912 certainly has plenty of ‘show’ to match its uprated ‘go’.

On account of its high-quality build and minimal milage covered since the works were completed, the bodywork on this example remains in exemplary condition, showing no signs of any impact or accident damage, mis-aligned panels or heavy wear that we can see, nor that the vendor has made us aware of.

Naturally, for a high-performance vehicle driven as-such, there is evidence of road rash / stone chips to the front end, bumper inserts, leading edge of the frunk and the windscreen, though this is all commensurate for a performance vehicle such as this. After all, it was built to be driven!

Other than the above however, the paintwork is free of any notable blemishes, with only the odd minor imperfection dotted around the vehicle, as expected from a vehicle that has been used and enjoyed. The chrome bumpers, over-riders and details also present very well indeed, though there is some light patina/dulling visible on the deck lid vents.

All four of the ‘Magnus Walker’ wheels are in fantastic condition, wrapped in matching Goodyear tyres. Matching, high-quality tyres is often a great indicator of fastidious ownership, so this is a very good sign indeed.

Interior

Inside, the good news continues unabated, with the refreshed interior still presenting in near-immaculate condition to this day, thanks to its limited and considerate use since being finished.

The seats show next to no discernible signs of wear, with no scuffs to the outer bolsters, major creasing or damage being visible.

The carpets, headliner and door cards are all of a similarly fantastic nature, with only some very minor wear being noted on the carpets.

Elsewhere, the brushed metal dashboard inserts exhibit some light wear and a more visible scratch on the passenger side (image 286) whilst the dashboard itself is free of damage, cracks or scuffing.

The original and wonderfully retro dials and gauges remain in-situ, though behind the fascia they have been upgraded to be compatible with the later 3.0-litre engine’s electrical systems. Speaking of upgrades, the original steering wheel has been replaced with a period-look MOMO Prototipo, whilst the shifter knob has been upgraded to a 917-style item.

Up front, the ‘frunk’ presents well with no sign of any staining or issues.

The vendor reports that there are no known faults with any of the switches, gauges or electrical systems on the vehicle.

Mechanical

Long-gone is the original flat-four engine, in its place sitting a rebuilt 3.0-litre flat-six engine from a 911 SC, which the vendor reports to give fantastic performance, and harbours no known issues or problems.

The engine itself presents very well indeed, with no obvious leaks or visual issues. There are some areas of slightly flaking paintwork visible around the fan housing (image 314) but nothing that would affect its operation.

Underneath, the chassis looks to be in excellent order, with the only particularly discernible wear being around the exhaust joins, where corrosion is visible.

On account of its age, this 912 is exempt from mandatory MoT examinations, and therefore does not have a current MoT certificate. The most recent test took place in March 2020, resulting in a pass with no advisory items.

History

Included with the vehicle is the V5 registered keepers document in the vendor’s name, showing 0 former UK keepers.

The full parts list from Carrera Performance is also present, showing in excess of £19,000 spent in parts alone whilst the car was being restored during Drew Pritchard Classic Car’s ownership.

Interestingly, the purchase invoice from Type 2 Detectives is included with the sale of the vehicle, showing a purchase price of £65,000. This is worth remembering, with our estimate being set in the region of £50,000 - £60,000!

Most importantly, the documentation from the recent round of works carried out by Parr Porsche whilst in the care of the vendor is included, with highlights from these invoices including the following at a cost of over £3,500 in Mays 2022:

- Attention to rough running issues, resulting in overhaul of the control pressure regulator along with checks of the timing and ignition systems

- Adjustment of engine timing

- Full geometry setup

- New gear lever bushes, new pedal box bushes

- New brake master cylinder seals

- Other miscellaneous works

Summary

A one-off build completed to an exacting standard, finished in a fantastic colour scheme and benefitting from significant recent expenditure at the hands of respected marque specialist Parr Porsche, this 1967 Porsche 912 may look like a well-kept 912 on the outside, but underneath hides plenty of performance, refinement and excitement.

One not to miss for any Porsche fan!
