Background

The 15/60 was the first of the mid-sized Pininfarina-styled automobiles manufactured by the British Motor Corporation (BMC) as part of the Wolseley brand. It was a design that would go on to be shared across seven other marques.

The Wolseley 15/60 was replaced by the Wolseley 16/60 in September 1961, which brought with it the welcome (for most) option of Borg Warner 35 automatic transmission.

The Wolseley 16/60 differed aesthetically from the 15/60 by dint of more protruding overriders on the bumpers, and modified rear fins and plastic mouldings on the rear lights.

The 16/60 models generally used the 1.6-Litre (1622 cc) B-Series engine, which gave the car a top speed of 81mph and made it really rather ponderous even by the standards of the day.

Overview

This motor car is being sold as part of an overseas collection. It has been imported under the Bonhams temporary admission customs bond and is therefore subject to the lower rate 5% import tax if the car is to remain in the UK & purchased by a private individual. The 5% is calculated on the final selling price. For example, if the car sells for £3,000, then £150 is added, making the total amount payable of £3,150.

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, and proof that HMRC fees are paid. If the car is subsequently exported abroad within 30 days then these fees are refundable.

A company buying the car will have to pay VAT on the hammer price, as well as duty + VAT.

Lastly, there will be a nominal administration fee of £350 for processing the NOVA application, and payable direct to the shipping company. A completed and processed NOVA will provide you formal proof that all duties & taxes are paid in UK and thus allow you to register the vehicle with the DVLA

In common with the majority of cars in this collection, this vehicle has been on static display for a number of years and there is no history available beyond that displayed in our photography section.

We have not started or driven the car so cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

It is available for view and inspection at our HQ near Abingdon and we will be delighted to show the car to you and/or your appointed engineer.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with very little history and no service records.

We haven’t tried to start or drive this RHD auto car and can therefore only attest to its cosmetic condition.

We know that the chassis number is WHS354578.

We know that, today, the odometer reads 68,410 miles.

We know from a sticker in the rear window that it attended the Goodwood Revival Meeting in 2018.

We know that it was bought for the vendor’s collection of static display vehicles in 2019.

We have found the following auction description of this vehicle from its sale at Anglia Car Auctions in January 2019.

“Registered to the last lady owner since 1995, the vendor advises that the car has been stored in a heated garage during her ownership. Recommissioned in 2018, it is described as running very well, having sound bodywork and the interior remaining in good condition. It has been fitted with front and rear seat belts. Five registered owners. It comes with a folder of service history dating from 1995, including MoTs. It also retains the original sales brochure. Mileage recorded at 68,395.”

Please note that the service history, sales brochure and old MoTs mentioned above are no longer with the car.

Exterior

In general, and from a few yards away, this mid-sized Wolseley presents reasonably well.

Move a little closer and it becomes apparent that the bodywork must have deteriorated somewhat since being described as ‘sound’ in 2019.

While the bodywork is largely free of any dents, dinks, creases or folds of significance, there are clearly some issues with corrosion which, in places, has eaten through the metal.

There is bubbling and flaking at the base of the o/s/r wing and into the wheel arch, where the bodywork is crumbling.

There is also bubbling and some flaking in the o/s/r wheel arch, the sill by the rear door, and right along the top of the sill to beyond the front door on the same side.

There is bubbling around the o/s/f headlight and flaking and holes beneath the o/s/f light cluster.

There is bubbling and flaking in the n/s/f wing at the bottom, in the wheel arch, and along the length of the n/s sill and into the rear wheel arch.

There are scuffs and scratches and patches of flat paint on most panels, plus evidence of previous corrosion repairs in a few places.

The front passenger door is currently refusing to open.

The paint has cracked and split in several seams and panel intersections, allowing a little rust dust to form inside.

The external rubber trim around the windows is perished.

The chrome on the grille is good, elsewhere it is slightly foxed and pitted.

Interior

The interior condition is rather better than its exterior counterpart.

In general, the red leather upholstery has held up pretty well and is free of any significant damage or signs of excessive wear.

The seats, front and back, are comfortable and supportive. The rear bench needs re-attaching to its base.

The carpets and mats are in decent fettle, as are the door cards.

The headlining is coming away by the rear screen.

The wood and veneers on the dashboard and door cappings are reasonably good, although the lacquer is crazed everywhere.

The fabric trim around the doors is threadbare.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t tried to start the vehicle.

Mechanical

The undersides have some rust dust and flaking on show, but not in abundance.

Overall, there seems to be a reasonable amount of structural integrity although, obviously, you’ll want to come and see for yourself.

The engine and engine bay look very clean and dry.

We have hand-cranked the engine, so it looks not to be seized.

History

The car doesn’t come with a service history or any record of work done.

Currently, this car has neither an MoT certificate nor a V5. It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this. Any paperwork shown in the gallery in no way constitutes any kind of licensing or registration certification.

Summary

We haven’t tried to start or drive the car so our understanding of it is somewhat limited.

That said, provided the car’s engine and mechanicals prove to be in proper working order and amenable to recommissioning, we think this 1965 Wolseley 16/60 might yet be well worth the investment of time and effort required to restore it to its former glory.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of £3,000 - £6,000, plus bond payment and £350 NOVA fee.
