Background

Following the huge success of the T1 Split Screen, 1967 brought us the production of the second-generation VW T2. Commonly known as the bay-window, the T2 is slightly larger and heavier than its predecessor, and was given the 47 bhp 1.6 litre engine, and a 12-volt electrical system.

A number of different body configurations were used for the second-generation Type 2, ranging from the Type 21 Panel Van, Type 22 Microbus, Type 23 Kombi, Type 24 Microbus L (which was the same as Type 22 but with some optional extras), and the Type 26 Pick-up, which was available as either a single cab or twin cab variant.

Finally, there is the one we have here, which is the late model Bay window crew cab. Quite similar to the Type 22, but with the addition of a half bulkhead between the cab and the passenger area. There is a single driver’s seat, a twin passenger seat and a full width bench seat in the rear of the cab.

Overview

The seller of this stunning 1972 Volkswagen T2 Double Cab Pick-up imported the vehicle from South Africa. The T2 comes with an extensive history, even as far as logging the price of the fuel, how much was put in and the mileage at the time. On top of this, any work or problems have also been logged to give a full account of the history of the vehicle. This dates from 1973 up until 1998, which we think you’ll agree is pretty impressive to say the least.

The double Cab was registered for use on the UK roads on 25/08/2021, where it then received a thorough checking over and any parts needing replacement were replaced, before going for a MoT test on the 23rd September 2021, which it passed with no advisories.

Exterior

The paintwork on the Double Cab is really well presented for the age of the vehicle. There are some chips and signs of patina, but all this builds character. Starting at the front and the front panel, (usually a place that ages quite quickly), we are pleased to say is in very nice condition, with no signs of corrosion or any signs of repairs. The headlights are in excellent condition with no damage to the lenses, and the chrome surrounds are in good order. The indicators are free from any splits or cracks. The bumper is nice and straight with no obvious dents and has been finished in an anthracite colour, together with the VW badge sitting pride of place in the center. The windscreen is in nice condition together with the rubber seal. There are no signs of corrosion to the lower section of the screen (which is usually quite common).

Looking to the side of the cab, the door shuts align nice and straight and the doors open and close as they should. There are an odd few chips to the edges of the doors as you often get, but there doesn't appear to be any corrosion. The window rubbers are again like the front screen and free from any signs of perishing or shrinkage. As we move along to the rear bed, the drop down doors are generally in good order, with just some slight rust stains on some of the joints to the inside of the doors. Externally they all look to be in good condition.

To the rear, and the engine cover door aligns as it should. There are some signs of slight surface rust to the panel below the door which does appear to have been repainted at some point. The drop down door for the bed looks to have a small split in the right hand hinge. The light lenses are in good condition with no splits to be seen.

Interior

Inside the Campervan is a delight, with the original interior showing some age but not past its best. The seats are finished in deep red vinyl. The driver's seat has had the most use as you would expect. There is a split to the back rest and also where the face meets the back of the seat. These have been held together with some gaffa tape. Under there we are not sure what the situation is and could possibly be repaired, but that's not for us to say. The passenger seat and the rear seat are in good condition along with the matching door cards.

The dashboard is free from any cracks. The instruments are reported to be working as they should with the odometer displaying a reading of 13,503 kilometers, we would assume this to be 113,503 km or 70,527 miles. There has been a Pioneer head unit fitted for a touch of modern in-car entertainment. The steering wheel is in good condition, and being from South Africa it is right hand drive.

The floor is covered in the rubber flooring, which is in good condition, and just above the headlining is in just as good order, with no sagging to be seen. Outside on the rear bed, and obviously this has done some element of work in its life, so there is the odd dent here and there to the bed. Generally, it is in excellent condition when you consider this would have once been a working van.

Mechanical

Inside the engine bay is well presented and shows no areas for concern. The engine is the original which has had a recent check over when the vehicle was prepped for use on the UK roads.

The underside of the T2 is in excellent condition, with no obvious areas for concern. There is some odd surface rust but in no way would this be any reason for concern, it is just surface rust.

The engine starts up just fine and is reported to drive well and also pull strongly through the gears. The gear change is reported to be smooth. The brakes bring the double cab to a halt nice and smoothly with no juddering.

History

A rare Double Cab Pick-up T2 that hasn't been worked to the bone, still retaining the original interior.

Imported from South Africa means the Pick-up is nice and clean to the underside, and regarding any corrosion, it looks to have no areas of concern. There has been a fresh MoT carried out on 23rd September 2021, with no advisories.

The original hand book is present, along with the most amazing handwritten log of fuel usage and maintenance we have ever seen.

Summary

At just over 43 years old, finding a Double Cab Pick-up that looks to be in a nice straight condition is something of a rarity, especially one that doesn't need a huge amount of bodywork repairs carried out. Some may see pick-ups a little less appealing when you step into the world of VW’s bay windows and campervans, with it having less space. However, just think about the other potentials this has. It could very easily be made into something to advertise your business? Or maybe utilize the flatbed and bolt a coffee machine to it? Mobile coffee, pizza, milk-shakes etc to take to shows, events and markets. You get the idea… there is definitely potential there.

We estimate this 1972 VW T2 Double Cab Pick-up will fetch in the region of £18,000 - £25,000.
