Background
The final variant of Volvo’s successful P1800 range, the ‘ES’ model was unveiled in 1972 as a two-door ‘shooting brake’ model, with a frameless all-glass tailgate and bodywork heavily influenced by Volvo’s in-house designer Jan Wilsgaard.
Underneath, the ES remained largely unchanged compared to the coupe 1800E, retaining the same 1.8-litre fuel-injected engine, though the 1800ES was slightly de-tuned, though on-road performance was better and less ‘peaky’ as many journalists noted in-period, despite the lower performance figure of 125bhp.
With its large loading bay aperture and fold-down rear seats (creating a flat storage space) the 1800ES was supremely practical.
In total, only 8,077 examples of the ES were built in 1972 and 1973, with the undeniably pretty ES being the final iteration of the P1800 produced, and the only model on offer in 1973. For reference, total 1800 production was 47,492 units, of which 8,077 were the ES model as seen here, making them rather rare indeed.
