Background

In 1973 Volkswagen unveiled its new 3 door sports hatchback the Scirocco at the Geneva Motor Show. Named after the Mediterranean wind, the compact design replaced the ageing Karmann Ghia and was penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign. A range of four cylinder 8v engines were offered in different markets around the world, from 1.1 right up to 1.7 litre. In 1981 the second generation Scirocco arrived with the Italian styling revised in house by Herbert Schäfer. This more grown up Scirocco, which was still assembled by Karmann for Volkswagen, was available in a wide range of trim options, with the Scala being one of the many that was offered in the UK. The Scala shared the 1.8 litre 8v from the Golf GTi which meant it had a lot more go to match its sporting looks.

Overview

The 1992 Volkswagen Scirocco Scala on sale here with Bonhams is a remarkable one owner survivor car with full service history from new. It was purchased new by the car's long term owner from Caffyns in Haywards Heath in West Sussex and was first registered on 1st August 1992. He tells us that he had owned a number of Sciroccos in the past and always loved the styling. By 1992 he was driving a navy blue Scirocco Scala, which he had already owned for just 2 years. He goes on to say that he received a letter from Volkswagen one day informing him that the firm was offering 500 Scala run out models for the UK market and that existing Scirocco customers could get £500 off if they traded in their own car. Realising that production of his favourite sports car was coming to an end, he decided to jump on the deal and ordered his brand new Scirocco Scala from the Caffyns dealership. It has been in his custodianship ever since.

Exterior

This Volkswagen Scirocco Scala is finished in the Volkswagen’s classic shade of Tornado Red and is fitted with the bodykit that denotes the sporting intentions of the compact hatchback. The red paint presents well overall with some areas showing signs of ageing and fading. The seller informs us that the paint is all original so after 31 years, it has held up pretty well. They go on to say the only repair to be carried out was to the drivers front wing which was damaged by a falling roof tile many years ago. The repair was done by a Volkswagen dealership and appears to have done to a high standard.

This Scirocco Scala sits on a set of original 14” Avus Snowflake alloy wheels which the seller says he had restored a number of years ago. There are a couple of spots where the lacquer has started to go on both the right side alloys. Some of the dark grey paint has started to chip in a few spots on the drivers front wheel. However the rest of the alloys are in good shape with no heavy kerbing or dings evident. No doubt a refurbishment would have these cool looking Avus Snowflake alloys looking as good as new.

Moving around the car there are some scuffs on the front bumper corners and on the right corner of the rear bumper. There is a small chip on the bonnet which is shown in the photos and just on the leading edge of the bonnet are some signs of surface corrosion but this appears to be very minor.

There is a small parking ding on the lower part of the driver's door and a very small crease mark on the drivers B pillar area. There is also a car park ding on the passenger door just above the trim strip. These imperfections could easily be addressed by a competent body shop and with a weekend of detailing and polishing, we reckon this Scirocco Scala’s paint would shine even more.

Elsewhere on the car the rear spoiler is in good condition with no breakdown of the rubber evident. The black has lost some of its colour with age but again a careful detail would help revive it.

Also to note is some cracking to the matte black coating on the drivers side B pillar which has started to crack and shrink slightly.

It has to be said though that this 31 year old Scirocco Scala is in very good shape indeed and in our opinion the imperfections noted do not detract from its appearance. It is after all an unrestored survivor that has escaped the rough life that many a Scirocco lead in their later years.

Interior

The runout Scirocco Scala was offered with tartan pattern Sports Seat, electric windows and central locking. And the interior of this example is in fantastic preserved condition.

The seller informs us that the Scirocco has been garage stored all its life and this has helped to protect the interior from prolonged exposure to the sun.

The tartan seat covers are in really good shape with none of the heavy wear and colour fade that commonly affects these models. There are some signs of wear on the drivers seat base but it is very minor indeed and the side bolster is not crushed or collapsed.

The door cards and nice and straight and free from damage and the dashboard is also in good shape and is crack free. The only non-original item is the stereo which was replaced many years ago after the original was unfortunately stolen.

Moving to the steering wheel there is only light wear evident on the rim and the same applies to the leather gear knob. It all just looks really nice and original.

And jumping to the back seats they hardly look like they have been used, with the tartan trim colours still strong and vibrant. The carpets are also in good shape and have been protected by genuine VW rubber matts from new.

The boot area is also in really good condition and the parcel shelf has not been cut or modified to fit extra speakers or other such adds ons.

The seller states that everything works as it should with the exception of the central locking system which was recently disabled during its last trip to the garage for a service. The locking system was playing up and the mechanic wasn’t able to source new parts. So it was decided to bypass the central locking mechanism and return the car to good old fashioned manual locking.

Mechanical

Under the bonnet resides the 1.8 litre 8v engine derived from the Golf GTi. This unit, which is a DX version, produces 112BHP and as it is a later Scala it benefits from fuel injection.

The engine bay of the Scirocco presents as being highly original and seller tells us it has been kept standard, which is what we like to see. The car's service history, which we will go in more detail a bit further down, is impressive with a total of 24 stamps over the past 31 years.

The seller tells us that whatever the Scirocco needed it got and it has been maintained by the same garage since 2003. The most recent service was carried out at on the 24th October 2022 at 112,688 miles and the invoice for this notes the bypass for the central locking.

The service book notes that the cambelt was replaced on 25th May 2018 at 110,363 miles.

The seller goes on to say that the Scirocco drives very well and we can confirm it started and idled very nicely for the photoshoot.

History

It really is rather lovely to find a car with a fully stamped service book and this shows that this Scirocco has clearly been cherished. As mentioned above the service book has a total of 24 stamps which charts the cars maintenance over the years and there is a stack of invoices that go back to 2003. These show the car has been maintained regardless of cost.

Another lovely detail is the original owners book pack is all present and correct and includes business card from the Caffyns dealership.

This 1992 Volkswagen Scirocco Scala comes with the V5C in the current owners name which shows zero previous owners.

The Scirocco also has a current MOT Certificate with no advisories which is valid until 24th November 2023. And it comes with two sets of keys.

One nice detail is the fact that the car gets a mention in a book “Licensed to Laugh” which was written by a friend of the owner. It documents a fishing trip they both took and some adventures they got into with the Scirocco.

Summary

It is becoming increasingly hard to find original and unmodified Volkswagen Scirocco Scalas, especially examples with one owner from new and full service history. What makes this Scirocco even more special is that this Scala is one of the 500 runout UK models made before production came to an end in 1992. This Volkswagen Scirocco Scala has clearly been cherished by its owner from new. Its preservation is a real credit to them and we know it will be sorely missed. This 1992 Volkswagen Scirocco Scala is now ready for the next part of its journey and it will make a worthy addition to any Volkswagen collection.

We estimate this car to fetch between £4,000 - £6,000 in auction.
