Background

In its 50-year history, the Volkswagen Passat has been chosen by more than 30 million people worldwide. This major milestone makes this German mid-size car the best-selling one ever in its class and, at the same time, the Wolfsburg company's second most successful model, ahead of such a sacred monster as the Beetle (21.5 million) and second only to the best-selling Golf (35 million). This car was built from 1981 to 1988 on the platform (slightly stretched, but still derived from the front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout of the Audi 80) of the first Passat (1973-81). The second-generation model retains the styling and proportions of its progenitor, on which Giorgetto Giugiaro (who in the 1970s for Volkswagen had signed two other important models such as the Golf and Scirocco) had also worked.

Overview

This Passat (chassis number WVWZZZ32ZHE107593) was built in 1987 and destined for the criminal police in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, where it served until 1992. According to our information, it is one of the very few sedans supplied to the German police (almost all were station wagons and with automatic transmission, while the car we offer is equipped with a five-speed manual transmission). The engine is the 90-hp four-cylinder 1.8 litre with mechanical fuel injection that entered the Passat range permanently from the next-generation model.

Along with the car, the owner provides a complete uniform with jacket, shirt and badge and a police coat of the time, as well as a glass beer mug (number 5 of the 5,000 that the Baden-Württemberg district received as a gift at that time). The odometer shows a mileage of 160,754 km.

Exterior

The exterior of the Passat is in very good order. The original white-green German police livery is brilliant and the bodywork has no particular flaws. The only small imperfections are light parking scratches on the black-painted plastic bumpers.

Everything else appears practically as new: the alignments between the fixed and moving body surfaces are exact, and the headlight caps are perfectly intact, as are all the plastic parts and glass surfaces. Hella's original siren works by operating a control carved into the headlight knob (to restore the original button, replace a blown relay).

Interior

The interior of the Passat is in good condition overall, without clear signs of wear. The most obvious flaws concern the driver's seat, which is marred by a few tears between the parts covered in faux leather and those lined in damask-type fabric (a small tear is also present at the top of the rear sofa backrest).

The plastics are all intact, as are the door panels: the one on the passenger side includes a phone slot and a pocket (closed by a lock) in which a machine gun is stored (it is not removable and, by law, cannot cross the borders of Bulgaria, where the vehicle is currently located). Also part of the original special equipment is the double rear-view mirror, the additional lamp on the dashboard and the radio antenna in the rear part of the headliner, which is in good condition.

Mechanical

Looking at the images of the underside, we can see that the bottoms and structural parts have no traces of passing rust that would compromise safety. Only slight signs of surface corrosion are present. The engine compartment is well-cleaned and tidy. According to what the owner reported, the transmission and the powertrain work very well. The engine, in particular, in addition to complete service (with replacement of oil and filters), about six months ago has benefited from several extraordinary maintenance operations, including a new timing belt (including a new water pump and thermostat) and new spark plugs.

History

After being decommissioned as a German police car, this Passat changed hands in 1992, went to Bulgaria and until 2021 belonged to a single owner, who repainted it in all white.

The car has been repainted in its original green-white livery by the current owner, who also offers (included in the price) a box full of spare parts.

Over the years this car has participated in numerous theme contests and won several awards.

Summary

Historic Volkswagen Passats are sturdy and reliable cars, and they remain faithful companions on long trips with family or friends. Our proposed unique model seems to be made especially for lovers of specially outfitted cars. Along with the undisputable charm of the uniform, is relevant to underline that the car is completely original, with only a little work to do on the interior to bring it back to the top and an engine recently renewed with a series of essential works. Ideal for thematic rallies or exhibitions, this Passat is also perfect for movies or TV series.

Price estimate for this Volkswagen Passat: €7,000 - €10,000.
