Background
In its 50-year history, the Volkswagen Passat has been chosen by more than 30 million people worldwide. This major milestone makes this German mid-size car the best-selling one ever in its class and, at the same time, the Wolfsburg company's second most successful model, ahead of such a sacred monster as the Beetle (21.5 million) and second only to the best-selling Golf (35 million). This car was built from 1981 to 1988 on the platform (slightly stretched, but still derived from the front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout of the Audi 80) of the first Passat (1973-81). The second-generation model retains the styling and proportions of its progenitor, on which Giorgetto Giugiaro (who in the 1970s for Volkswagen had signed two other important models such as the Golf and Scirocco) had also worked.
