Background
The range of mainstream engine configurations has been well established for some time now in the motor industry, you had the choice of either an inline something or a V something. More recently, should you be awash with cash, you might even stump for a W something from the likes of Bugatti.
But in 2004, Volkswagen was going through a bit of a teenage like experimentation phase and trying new configurations as technical showpieces. The VR4 and VR6 came first, then by ‘sticking together’ two VR4s they announced a W8, which they then shoehorned into a B5 Passat body.
The W8 Passat wasn’t just any B5 Passat though thankfully as VW threw the options list at it, and whilst VW was reaching increasingly upmarket, the Passat W8 was thought to be an entrée to the more expensive models the firm was planning to offer.
Being a technical beta, the W8 is a genuinely interesting and technically intriguing engine, capable of very smooth power delivery, making it an autobahn stormer as opposed to a back road blast.
Now, these Passat’s look like a lot of car for the money on the second hand market (if you can find a good one as production numbers were all that high), the W8 is a sophisticated and understated car, so if you’re after something ‘feel good’ without drawing attention, then this is the car for you.
