Background

The range of mainstream engine configurations has been well established for some time now in the motor industry, you had the choice of either an inline something or a V something. More recently, should you be awash with cash, you might even stump for a W something from the likes of Bugatti.

But in 2004, Volkswagen was going through a bit of a teenage like experimentation phase and trying new configurations as technical showpieces. The VR4 and VR6 came first, then by ‘sticking together’ two VR4s they announced a W8, which they then shoehorned into a B5 Passat body.

The W8 Passat wasn’t just any B5 Passat though thankfully as VW threw the options list at it, and whilst VW was reaching increasingly upmarket, the Passat W8 was thought to be an entrée to the more expensive models the firm was planning to offer.

Being a technical beta, the W8 is a genuinely interesting and technically intriguing engine, capable of very smooth power delivery, making it an autobahn stormer as opposed to a back road blast.

Now, these Passat’s look like a lot of car for the money on the second hand market (if you can find a good one as production numbers were all that high), the W8 is a sophisticated and understated car, so if you’re after something ‘feel good’ without drawing attention, then this is the car for you.

Overview

This Passat looks to have been imported in 2018 and has had 4 owners since, the service intervals have been regular and within manufacturer distances. The car now finds itself with a trade dealer and presents in excellent overall condition suggesting that it has been well looked after.

Specification when ordered new included heated front and rear seats, rear blind, electric / memory drivers seat and full Nappa leather interior.

Exterior

A normal B5 Passat to the uninformed but there are subtle hints for those in the know, the original cross-bolted alloy wheels, the quad exhaust pipes and front and rear badging of course suggest there is more than meets the eye here.

The black metallic paint looks to be in very good condition with minimal swirling and only usual wear and tear marks corresponding to the vehicles mileage and age. It has been Matrix Ceramic Coated too, with the vendor describing the paintwork condition as 'like glass'. There is a mark in the middle of the rear bumper and some small scratches around the driver’s door handle.

The chrome around the car looks in good condition as do the light lenses and glass. The wheels are a dark anthracite grey and look to be relatively clean and free from curb marks or lacquer peel.

Interior

The interior is where this Passat shines, it was given an upmarket feel and as a result you get leather upholstery, electric memory seats, rear heated seats, rear window blind and wood panelling. Just some of the nice touches that come with the car and indicate VW’s attempts at broadening their upmarket reach.

According to the vendor, the back seats are like new and the front seats show hardly any wear. Door shuts and plastic trims are also in great condition, and the same can be said for the carpets.

The interior of this example has survived very well indeed, there might be the odd mark here and there, such as the rear driver’s side seat upright having a mark to the leather, some minor wear and tear scratches to the switchgear and maybe a missing button on the multimedia screen in the centre console but aside from these small things it looks to be in amazing shape. Boot space is plentiful and the condition in the load bay is just as good as the cabin space and the carpet looks clean and without excessive wear.

Mechanical

The W8 is the real draw to this car however and this one is reported to be in great condition. As is typical with many VWs from this era, the good stuff is hidden behind a myriad of rather drab and plain looking plastic covers. From what we can see however, there doesn’t appear to be any signs of fluid leaks, split hoses, exposed wires or damage to the structure of the bay. Underneath the car looks to be much the same story with some surface corrosion starting to show but no more than expected for a car of this age/mileage.

The Passat has the 4Motion 4-wheel drive system and the 5 speed automatic gearbox, both are reported to be working as expected.

History

The Passat’s service history includes a recent service at Peter Coopers VW - serviced at 1631miles, 4149miles, 12427miles, 13670miles, 20691miles, 44000miles and 54500miles. The car also comes with a full HPI check which indicates the Passat was imported into the UK in 2018.

Recent Work Includes:

  • 28/05/19: Replacement of Driveshaft and A/C Compressor and renewal of gearbox rear seal - £887.68
  • 08/03/22: Alloy Wheel Refurbishment - £336.00
  • 08/03/22: Oil and Filter Change, Diagnositics of Cruise Contril and Replacement Fog Lamp- £236.22
  • 13/04/22: Replacement of NSF Track Rod End and 4 Wheel Alignment - £218.00

Summary

VW’s golden age of experimentation with crazy engines resulted in some fantastic outcomes and ones that enjoy the upper echelons of motoring to this day. The W8 was a key milestone in VW’s R&D and remains a quirky, interesting, and different way to power yourself along.

For that reason, you have to love it, so constrained with rules and regulations is today’s motor industry that true, hairbrained innovation like this is hard to come by. This car has clearly been cherished during its 21 years of life and remains in fantastic condition, buy right and this is a lot of car for the money. We think we have the ‘buy right’ car for you here so you should definitely consider putting a bid in if you’re after something subtle, luxurious, and just a bit different.

We estimate this Passat will reach anywhere between £4,000 - £6,000.
