“ Family Owned with only 768 Miles from New ”

The Golf Mk5 makes for a great buy, especially for a model that’s been looked after, or barely used, like the example we have here. Whilst there are plenty on the market, there can’t be many in this condition. This is a sporty yet practical hot hatch and it is a great buy for any purists who want to have as close to a new car as a 2008 motor can be. This being such an unusual buy, we think a prospective buyer will need to part with somewhere between £10,000 to £15,000 to take this car home.

Background

When the Mk5 Golf first hit the streets, buyers could choose between three petrol and three diesel engines. Petrol choices were a 1.4, 1.6 or 2.0-litre, while diesel fans could opt for a non-turbocharged 2.0-litre, or a turbocharged 1.9 or 2.0-litre (the latter being an example of what we have here). The GT Sport TDI came with new injectors and a few engine tweaks. The SE trim level was phased out during a facelift in 2006 - the Match trim level replaced it and the GT trim received an upgrade. The range was joined by a longer estate model in 2007, enhancing the Golf’s load-lugging capability while keeping its handsome looks. Naturally, the diesel models return the best mpg figures. The 2.0-litre TDI is fairly economical and can manage between 39-49mpg depending on the gearbox. The Mk5 was produced between 2004-2009.

Overview

This car is a time warp – it’s in almost exactly the same condition it was in when it first left the showroom back in 2008. It has a mere 768 miles, yes, fewer than 800 miles on the odometer - it even has its original brake pads and tyres. That’s because it has spent its days in a garage under a blanket. The car has not been started for the best part of 10 years. Whilst the dashboard lights turn on and the battery can be charged up, the vendor is nervous to start it until the cam belt is replaced, to avoid possible damage to the cylinder head. That being said, a representative for the vendor states there is nothing to suggest that it will not start. As this car is in such uniquely original condition, the vendor is conscious not to service the vehicle. He is of the belief (quite rightly) that a prospective buyer would likely wish to carry out this initial service themselves. Given its virgin status, this car also comes with the much coveted ‘new car smell’, too!

Exterior

The TDi GT is a sporty and compact hatchback that blends sportiness and functionality. The front end features a bold grille with horizontal black slats and the iconic Volkswagen logo positioned prominently in the centre. The headlights are curved and wrap around the side. Moving along the sides, the car showcases smooth and aerodynamic lines. It has a compact yet muscular profile, emphasising its sporty nature. The door handles and side mirrors are body-coloured, providing a seamless integration into the overall design. The rear is characterised by simplicity and functionality. The taillights are horizontally oriented and extend onto the sides of the boot, creating a cohesive visual effect. The car sits on a set of highly original and stylish, multi-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels….and the car’s original tyres! There is nothing to fault, no stone chips to mention and no scuffs to draw the eye to - as far as we can see, this car is pristine.

Interior

The interior offers a comfortable and driver-focused environment with a range of features that combine functionality and style. The TDi GT comes with a well-designed and ergonomically arranged cabin. The sporty black leather seats support spirited driving.

The dashboard is home to an intelligently laid out instrument cluster, which includes clear and easy-to-read gauges for speed, RPM, fuel level, and other essential information. The centre console houses the infotainment system and climate controls. The central display serves as the control centre for audio and vehicle settings. The system supports a CD player and auxiliary inputs.

The use of glossed black trim, silver buttons on the centre console and metallic accents on the steering wheel add gear surround add a touch of sophistication to the overall ambiance. There is ample cabin space to comfortably accommodate both the driver and passengers. The rear seats can be folded down to expand the cargo area, providing versatility for carrying larger items. In terms of comfort and convenience, the cabin features climate control.

Mechanical

The 4 cylinder, 2litre Golf TDi GT is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The car has a fuel capacity of 55 litres and should be able to achieve north of 500 miles with a tank of petrol, making it very economical. In line with the rest of the vehicle, under the bonnet is spotlessly clean. There is no evidence of leakage and everything looks to be in its right and proper place.

History

This car has had one service north of 12 years ago when it reached 650 miles on the clock where it gained its one and only stamp by the VAG main dealer in Oxford. For the keen eyed among you, should someone do an HPI check on the car, it looks as if there have been two prior owners. However, this was due to an administrative change where the vendor (who is the first registered keeper) transferred it to his mother and then back to himself. No money changed hands and the vendor’s mother never drove it. This car was registered in September 2008 and its most recent MoT expired in December 2017. It has an MoT record from 2011 through to 2017.
