Background

The Triumph Stag was conceived as a luxury sports car designed to compete with such luminaries as the Mercedes-Benz SL. All Stags were convertible coupes but having four seats they were more usable than most.

Taking the roof off a car has a tendency to compromise structural rigidity and as the Stag was destined to compete in the American market, it had to meet their stringent rollover standards. The Stag was therefore fitted with its distinctive B-pillar roll bar hoop, connected to the windscreen.

A body-coloured removable hard top was a popular option, so much so that it became a standard fitment on later cars.

Styled by Giovanni Michelotti, the Stag still has the ability to turn heads today and is as undoubtedly appealing as ever.

The Triumph Stag has sizeable club and owner support and there are many specialists who help keep these beauties on the road.

It is believed that there are still around 8,500 Stags in the wild in the UK, that’s almost half the 17,819 ever registered for our roads.

Overview

We are pleased to offer for sale a lovingly cherished 1973 Stag, in the same ownership now for some nine years.

Our seller bought the car from an elderly owner who we believe was a Triumph mechanic.

Much work has been during our seller’s custody of the Stag, including a bare metal respray, the fitting of a new mohair hood, not to mention a plethora of new parts.

A painful left knee, a curse of old age, means that he now finds the car uncomfortable to drive so somewhat reluctantly it is time for someone else to enjoy his pride and joy.

The car comes with plenty of history, in the form of bills, old MoT certificates etc.

So, fire up that burbling V8, engage first gear and you are off, wind in your hair, admiring glances coming your way. Appealing thought, isn’t it? Well read on and then get bidding for this rare and collectable Stag.

Oh, and don’t forget to join the Stag Owners’ Club, as did our seller. You’ll be in good company and will benefit from all the help and support you need to keep the car in fine fettle.

Exterior

We are told the car had a full bare metal respray around five years ago. This was done for cash, hence the lack of supporting documentation.

However, one look at the gleaming red paint is enough to confirm the fact. At the same time the car was thoroughly checked for any early signs of corrosion and was pronounced sound.

It is our job to be picky, so we would mention a little bubbling and cracking of the paintwork on the seam in front of the windscreen and also the seam near to the front bumper.

Much of the chrome sparkles but look carefully at our photographs and you will see a few areas in need of attention.

The wheels look ok from a distance, though we expect any purchaser may well wish to have them professionally repainted. All four tyres have plenty of tread.

The mohair hood, purchased from specialist Rimmer Bros in the sum of £501.54, was fitted in 2019.

There is no hard top with the car, but these are readily available if you should desire. As this is likely to be a summer car for high days and holidays, then surely open-air motoring is what it is all about.

Interior

Contrasting nicely with the red exterior are the black vinyl seats. These are in good order, the material being more durable than leather.

Let us also not forget that the Stag is a four-seater, so days out with family and friends are most definitely on the cards. It will get a little breezy in the back, but try to think of another convertible classic car that can be enjoyed with company.

Door cards are generally fine, though we do notice some damage on the driver’s side, visible when the door itself is open.

Mats and carpest are in good order and a peek beneath reveals a solid painted floor.

In order to preserve the dashboard, our seller had a professional French polish the wood, to good effect in our opinion. He has even been so kind as to include a tin of wax in the sale. The Smiths gauges present plenty of information, to help keep you on the straight and narrow.

A modern Sony CD stereo is fitted – we would be tempted to source something a little more in period, but that’s just us!

The Stag boasts a decent sized boot, ideal for touring holidays, and there’s space under the carpeted boot floor for a full-size spare.

Mechanical

Lift the bonnet and that lovely V8 is there to delight in all its glory. The engine compartment itself is in fine condition, even down to new sound deadening fitted on the bonnet’s underside.

It doesn’t take a trained eye to see that this is a cared for car, with evidence of many new parts and a general air of cleanliness and order.

The seller tells us that the engine has been tested and boasts a very high compression.

The Stag’s underside wears its years well, though we would be inclined to spend a little time and effort and apply additional underseal. Prevention is so much better than cure…

History

We like a car with lots of history. It shows careful and considered ownership. So, what can we tell you?

We have already mentioned the bare metal respray and new hood, which nicely covers the outside.

However, our seller has spent much of his hard-earned cash on the mechanics too. We think a list may well be in order here:

Carburettors professionally rebuilt

Updated water pump

Updated oil pump

New clutch

New overdrive bearing kit

New steering rack

New starter motor

Rear stainless steel exhaust shims

New electric fuel pump

The Stag is of course now MoT exempt, but there are lots of old certificates which help to authenticate the mileage.

The last test was in May 2017 when the odometer read 85,051. Approximately 5,000 miles have been covered since.

Summary

What nicer way to enjoy an English summer than in an archetypal British convertible sports car? The fact that it is red, means you will undoubtedly stand out from the crowd too.

This lovely Triumph Stag has been lavished with care and attention during our seller’s long ownership and it is now ready for exciting new adventures.

If you want to be that lucky person, get bidding right away.

You probably would also like a guide as to price. We estimate the car will sell for between £13,000 and £18,000.
