Background

The Triumph Stag was conceived as a luxury sports car designed to compete with such luminaries as the Mercedes-Benz SL. All Stags were convertible coupés but, having four seats, they were more usable than most.

Taking the roof off a car has a tendency to compromise structural rigidity and as the Stag was destined to compete in the American market, it had to meet their stringent rollover standards. The Stag was therefore fitted with its distinctive B-pillar roll bar hoop, connected to the windscreen.

A removable hard top was a popular option, so much so that it became a standard fitment on later cars.

Styled by Giovanni Michelotti, the Stag still has the ability to turn heads today and is as undoubtedly appealing as ever.

Chassis No: LD35313LA

Odometer: 89,959 km.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with little history or service records.

With the proviso that we haven’t tried to start or drive this car and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic condition, we think this 1975 LHD automatic Triumph Stag is a particularly good example. It has survived its 47 years of life very impressively and is in time-warp condition, inside, outside and underneath.

We know that it entered the vendor’s collection of static display cars in 2015.

And we know that prior to that it was living in Germany (where its owner was a member of the Triumph Stag Owners’ Club of Germany) and, before that, Switzerland.

The car does not have a hard top.

Exterior

Presented in dark red with a black fabric roof and a beige interior, the car looks very good from every angle.

The bodywork is largely free of any idents, bumps or creases.

The shut-lines and panel gaps are fairly even, although the gaps around the boot lid are a little inconsistent – but probably no more so than when the car left the factory.

Aside from a few stone chips around the front and rear valances and on the leading edges of the doors and bonnet, the paintwork is really pretty good overall.

There are a few marks and a bit of dappling on the paint behind the fuel filler cap.

The wheels are good all round and most of the chrome work is in excellent condition.

The exterior trim has endured remarkably well. The lights, lenses and badging are mostly fine, although the Stag badge at the rear on the passenger side is cracked and scuffed.

There is a tiny amount of rust dust visible in one or two places on the bodywork above the front grille and headlights.

The hood appears to be in good condition, too, aside from a couple of small nicks to the fabric along the edges above the windows.

Interior

The interior looks to have survived extremely well overall, and there’s really very little to complain about.

The upholstery is undamaged and uncreased, both front and back.

The carpets and mats are good, as are the door cards and the lining of the hood.

The wood veneers on the dashboard look very good, and the steering wheel, gear selector and instruments all seem to be in first-class condition.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t tried to start the vehicle.

There is a section of carpet or cowling missing from underneath the dashboard above the passenger footwell. Various electrical wires and bits of ducting are visible as a consequence.

Lifting up the carpets reveals some minor rust dust but nothing that seems overly concerning.

Mechanical

Everything we can see looks to have a decent amount of structural integrity. There is some flaking in places, but it doesn’t appear to be particularly threatening, as far as we can tell.

Everything in the engine bay is in its right and proper place and seems to be clean and dry.

History

The car doesn’t come with any history or service records.

This car must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

Any paperwork shown in the gallery is a facsimile (photocopies) and in no way constitutes any kind of licensing or registration certification.

Summary

Apart from one or two minor cosmetic issues, we’d say that this Triumph Stag seems to us to be in really very good condition and far better than either its age or odometer reading would normally dictate.

Provided, of course, that the engine and mechanicals are as good as the rest of the car, we think this Stag should reward its next owner with years of motoring pleasure.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €6,000 - €10,000.
