Mark's review

Mark Livesey - Consignment Specialist Message Mark

“ A fabulous 60's sportscar from Japan. Fitted with new engine (No.6082022) but also has the original engine (No.2U-441493) included in the auction. ”

Comes with a certified photocopy of a Philippines title document.

Background

Introduced in 1965, the Sports 800 was Toyota’s very first production sports car and was first shown in concept form to the Japanese public in 1962.

Powered by a dual carburettor engine, the car’s small size and lightweight construction (aluminium panels were used) made it a lively and agile performer.

The Sports 800 was in some ways innovative, not least because it was one of the first cars to feature a lift-out Targa-style roof – predating Porsche’s adoption of that feature.

In other ways it was quite derivative – seen from the rear in low light you’d swear it was a Lotus Elan.

Either way, it was an important milestone in the emergence of Toyota as a sports car manufacturer.

Overview

The vast majority of the 3,131 Sports 800 cars made were RHD, but some 300 were LHD models like this one, and were originally built to serve the needs of an Okinawan demographic that had grown accustomed to LHD cars after being occupied by American troops after the war. A very small number of these cars made their way to US dealers.

We know that this particular car spent several years living in the Philippines.

The odometer is showing 55,573 kms, a number that we can’t verify.

This vehicle is currently in storage at CARS Europe BV. If you require a quote for shipping anywhere in the world, please contact them direct (details below).

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, as their legal proof of purchase.

Unless otherwise stated, we have not tried to start or drive the car and cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

It must be collected within 7-days of the auction end. Storage charges (€70 + local VAT per car per week) will commence from the sixth day following the auction end.  These must be paid in full prior to the vehicle’s collection or onward transportation.

Collection and viewings are strictly by appointment only.

Please send an email to the storage centre to ensure vehicle(s) are ready at time of collection. Photographic ID will be required at time of collection. If a third party is collecting for you, then written authorisation is required in advance from you and photographic ID of the third party is required at the time of collection.

CARS Europe BV will contact you after the balance payment is received to confirm onward transport requirements. For enquiries about import tax and shipping contact Madam Joanna Herlihy, +31 (0) 252 682 526, +44 7483 433912, joanna@carsworldwide.com.

Exterior

The bodywork has numerous dinks and dents to show for its years of life but, as it is largely aluminium and has spent its life in countries where salt isn’t routinely thrown all over the road, it has survived the passage of time with reasonable success.

The wheels, which look to us to be aftermarket items, are in decent order.

The boot lid is a little warped and reluctant to close properly.

Interior

The interior is in a comparable condition to that of its exterior counterpart: it is more than a little tired and shabby but not, we think, irredeemably so, and most of what needs doing is purely cosmetic.

The black seats and door cards have a few small nicks and tears – but are otherwise serviceable.

Various items look as if they may be aftermarket additions, namely the radio, gear knob and steering wheel.

Mechanical

The car comes with its original engine, plus another engine (which we think dates from 2006) that’s sitting on a wooden pallet.

Clearly, we can’t vouch for the car’s mechanicals because we haven’t started or driven it.

History

In common with many of the cars from this collection, this example comes with very little paperwork or history.

We know little about it except that it was registered in the Philippines and has photocopies of title documents issued in that country. We also know from a tax sticker on the windscreen that the car was still in the Philippines in 2013.

Summary

These are rare cars even in Japan, where only 3,131 were ever built in the first place.

This LHD iteration is rarer still, and represents a very special piece of Japanese automotive history.

Once restored and back on the road, it’s sure to get heads turning and people talking wherever you go.

We’re confident to offer this fine car for auction with an estimate of €15,000 - €20,000.

The car is currently in storage, you can see a picture of the collection as it stands today at the very bottom of the photo gallery.
