Background

The so-called ‘New age’ Impreza was first unveiled in Summer 2000, as the second-generation of the legendary Subaru Impreza sedan. Whilst this second-generation model (codename GD, GG) remained on-sale until 2007, it went through a number of facelifts in its time, going from the initial ‘bug eye’ style, to the ‘blob eye’ and ultimately the final ‘Hawkeye’ front end, named due to the changing headlights as an easy way to distinguish these mid-life-cycle updates.

Produced between 2005 and 2007, the ‘Hawkeye’ Impreza - as seen here - featured a dramatic front-end redesign, with more conventionally-shaped, yet aggressive headlights, reprofiled bumpers featuring controversial ‘jet wing’ mouldings designed to pay homage to Subaru’s aviation roots, and also features new tail lights along with a minor interior refresh.

Post-2006 cars boast the desirable EJ25 engine, with power output as standard sitting at 227bhp with 236 lb-ft of torque on offer. However, all UK-spec GD-chassis Imprezas were able to be fitted with the optional Prodrive Performance Pack, which boosted power output to 266bhp, along with boosting the torque figure to 310 lb-ft, and cost £1,700 in 2007.

Overview

This particular Hawkeye Impreza was one of the last of its kind, being registered during 2007 - the year that the GD was taken off-sale and replaced with the controversial hatchback-style Impreza.

Not only is it one of the last ‘true’ Imprezas of the era, but also boasts the desirable EJ25 engine and Prodrive Pack, as certified by both the documentation and the official sticker on the inside of the driver’s door aperture, reminding any would-be hooligans to notify their insurance company accordingly!

Registered new to Subaru UK, the car then transferred into private ownership in 2008, and has remained in the care of this one private owner to date, now being offered for sale through the trade.

Having been kept ‘in house’ for the first couple of years of its life, it would appear that this Impreza WRX passed into the care of an incredibly fastidious owner, who has kept the mileage below 20,000 miles and has quite evidently cherished and pampered this Impreza, such is the condition it remains in to this day.

Other than the factory-fitted Prodrive Performance Kit, this Impreza also remains totally bone-stock, something that not many other examples can claim with any honesty…

Exterior

Finished in metallic silver over a grey/black interior, this ‘GD’ is a timeless design, and will no doubt conjure up plenty of nostalgic memories of racing franchises, Gran Turismo games and the like, thanks to its iconic silhouette, exaggerated rear wing and performance styling.

Looking along the flanks of the car, the panels are straight-and-true throughout, with no signs of any impact damage that we could see. Similarly, the paint is - on the whole - very good throughout, a sure-fire sign of cherished ownership.

There are a few imperfections to note, which are commensurate for a vehicle of this age. The front passenger door has a number of what appear to be ‘car park’ dents and dings along its length, whilst both the front and rear bumpers appear to be a slightly different shade of silver, having perhaps been repainted its some point in the vehicle’s history, though we were not able to confirm this.

Elsewhere, all of the light lenses are clear of any damage, whilst the trims, badges and rubbers are all present-and-correct. Of course, there were some stone chips, usage marks and light imperfections present, but this is to be expected and the worst offenders have been detailed in the gallery below.

All four of the wheels are in good, useable condition, though there are some signs of bubbling around the centre caps on some wheels, along with some minor kerb rash noted during our photo shoot, which is only really visible up-close.

Finally, all four corners are wrapped in matching Toyo Proxes tyres. Matching rubber is usually a good indicator of fastidious ownership, in our experience, and would certainly correspond with the condition displayed on the rest of the vehicle.

Interior

If you thought the outside was good, wait until you step inside the wonderfully 2000’s cabin of this Impreza WRX.

It really is quite remarkable.

The seats, through heavily-bolstered as most performance vehicles of the era were, remain in outstanding condition, with virtually no signs of use or wear, even to the outer bolsters of the driver’s seat, which is usually the first area to ‘go bad’ on any vehicle.

The carpets, headliner and centre console are also excellent, and even high-traffic areas such as the switchgear, steering wheel and shifter remain in great shape, with minimal wear noted to the graphics, touch points or leather.

We did notice that the door cards - in particular on the driver’s door - have some light staining around the armrests, but we reckon a through steam-cleaning would go a long way towards reducing, if not entirely rectifying this issue.

In the rear, the boot looks barely ever used, as do the rear seats, whilst there were no obvious faults or issues with the electrical systems within the vehicle, nor any problems reported by the vendor.

Mechanical

Under the bonnet, the block, ancillaries and bay as a whole present fantastically, having benefitted from a professional detailing and clean-up prior to photography.

Once we’d got over just how well-presented this engine was, we had a good look around and could not see any signs of any oil or fluid leaks, nor any obvious issues, with everything looking to be in its right-and-proper place.

Underneath the car, the chassis shows some wear and ‘bloom’ in keeping with the vehicle’s age and limited use, but nothing that appeared to be of any concern.

The most recent MoT exam - dated 09 February 2022 - shows a clean pass, with no advisory items.

In fact, we think the MoT history is worth highlighting here, as it is squeaky-clean throughout, save for two failures. One in 2018 for an inoperable registration plate light, and one in 2010 for a headlamp aim issue… remarkable!

History

Included with the vehicle is the V5 showing one former keeper (Subaru UK, we’re told) along with a stamped service record and the Prodrive certificate, confirming the authenticity of the pack fitted to the vehicle.

Two keys are included with the sale of the car.

Please note: We’re currently awaiting a photograph of the aforementioned pro drive certificate, which we will upload as soon as we receive it.

Summary

A ‘time capsule’ of mid-noughties performance, presented in factory condition throughout and with low ownership, this is an opportunity that does not come along often, and is one that we have no doubt will be pounced upon by loyal enthusiasts and collectors around the country.

Offered with an estimate of £16,000 to £20,000 this is a wonderful chance to perhaps relive your youth, or tick the Subaru-shaped box on your automotive bucket list.
