Background

Saab were a pioneering and truly visionary automobile manufacturer, after their migration to making cars from creating hardware for the Swedish air force in 1945, the company were off to a flying start (sorry, couldn’t help myself) with their first offering, the 92. With successes right out of the gate, Saab entered into motorsport and gained victories on the World Rally stage. Continuing with the huge popularity and excellence Saab gained from their products, they were set to bring yet another icon to the table, the 99 Turbo. This car set off Turbo mania with any product sporting the word being instantly perceived as a better offering and Saab wasn’t done yet, they continued to bring innovative and interesting cars to the market before slowly being forced into bankruptcy after no deals to buy the brand came to fruition.

The 9-3 in this auction was an offering from the Swedish brand in production from 1998-2003 based on the Epsilon platform from then owners General Motors. The first generation of 9-3 is known as the OG or Old Generation and boasted claims of 1100 changes from the outgoing 900. Always conscious of safety, the 9-3 was built with better ‘crashworthiness’ in mind with body reinforcements along with more driver focused handling characteristics. An innovative, safe and improved handling car afforded Saab some very discerning owners who remained loyal to the brand through their excellent offerings.

Overview

The Saab was purchased last year from our very own auctions, as a stop gap car whilst the owner was looking for another Saab. It has had around £1000 of work completed to bring it back up to its best and the owner has put a few thousand miles on the car taking it on a trip to the South of France where it is reported to have performed admirably and without fault. It is a low owner and low mileage car that presents very well in its silver body colour with blue convertible roof. During its time with this owner, it has been very well cared for and retains its condition as being one of the better examples of the model. Now surplus to requirements, the car is not seeing the use it deserves and the owner has decided to move the car on.

Exterior

The Saab is presented in a timeless silver colour with few minor imperfections that come from 21 years on the road, they are pictured below in the gallery but aren’t anything more than a local body shop could give a quick touch up. Aside from these minor imperfections, the paint work is in great condition with few stone chips or car park battle scars and the paint looks to be free from fading or any excessive scratches. The trim around the car is in good condition with the bumper plastics keeping their deep shine and not looking to be brittle or degraded.

The chrome grille finishes the front end off nicely, the tyres look to have plenty of tread left in them and the alloys look to be free of any kerbing or damage. The lights and electrics around the exterior of the car including the front headlight wipers and the hood all are reported to work as intended. The roof and rear window are both in great condition with no fading, rips tears or wear, the mechanism is reported to be smooth and effortless tucking away nicely in the rear stowaway.

Interior

The interior of the Saab looks fantastic and is in great condition, clearly an indicator that the car has been carefully looked after from its low number of owners. The steering wheel and other major touch points are free from excessive wear and retain the shine in the leather. The wood panelling behind the steering wheel is in good condition with no visible lacquer peel or chips or cracks. Both the carpet and the roof lining are in good condition too with no rips, tears, sagging or fading.

The upholstery of the seats really defies its age as it presents in very good condition with it even having minimal creasing in the driver’s seat bolster. The plastics and trim around the door cards and dashboard are free from cracks and any damage with only some very minor superficial scratches to the area around the centre console storage compart (if we were being picky).

Inside the boot and the carpet is in the same good quality condition as the cabin and the condition of the metal underneath the spare wheel foam package is remarkably clean. The inside of the Saab overall is very good indeed and an impressive mark for Saab’s build quality alongside their visionary design.

Mechanical

Lifting the bonnet on the Saab and you’re presented with a very clean engine bay with almost no signs of the car ever seeing any road grime. There are no signs of any fluid leaks and indeed looking at the car’s history and mileage, there is no visible reason to believe that the engine isn’t in the best condition it can be, indeed the owner reports the powerplant to be very healthy.

If you’ve read this far then you’ll not be surprised to hear that the body underneath the Saab is just as good as the top side. Starting at the front and there doesn’t seem to be any damage from speed bumps or low curbs on the underside of the bumper. The plastic undertrays are in one piece and the suspension components have a minimal amount of surface rust. It’s a similar story around the sides and back of the car with only the passenger side skirt having a minor scuff underneath the body. The exhaust looks to be in good condition and the arches look to be remarkably clean.

History

The Saab presents as a very clean and well looked after car, with only 2 previous keepers and with low miles it’s clearly been in the hands of some discerning and careful custodians.

It has a V5 and a full HPI check in 2021. It has mainly had some tidying up jobs done to it whilst it has been with the current owner and the invoices record that. The Saab comes with the owner’s manual and the service book with a plethora of stamps from regular scheduled servicing. A summary of the presented paperwork is given below.

- Dnb mechanical services – 08/12/2021 – Servicing (oil and filter)

- Dnb mechanical services – 08/03/2022 – New osf fog lamp, ns headlamp washer motor

- Dnb mechanical services – 19/04/2022 – Inertia light investigation

- Dnb mechanical services – 18/05/2022 – Remove climate control unit and fit new LCD screen and Ribbon

The car comes with two keys and a leather wallet for all the documentation.

Summary

This is a fantastically presented example of one of Saabs superbly engineered models. The 9-3 was a dependable, practical, well handling and handsome car with all the Swedish charm that Saab’s came with. It would be equally capable of handling day to day duties or being a dependable and fun weekend summer car. A well rounded and interesting prospect that we are sure is set to provide plenty of positivity to its next discerning owner.

We estimate this Saab 93 LP Turbo to reach between £5,000 - £9,000.
