Background
Although based heavily on the preceding 99 model, the 1978-unveiled Saab 900 was, from the A pillars forward, distinctly different from its angular predecessor. The Swedish firm’s drive for safety continued with the 900’s telescopically collapsible steering column and new seats with adjustable head restraints. The slant-four engine was still the powerplant of choice in Trollhättan, with the first 900s available in 2.0-litre 100bhp GL spec, right up to a 145bhp Turbo model.
A new 16-valve engine was added to the range from 1985 in the Turbo 16, with power significantly improved. The 175bhp was enough for the T16 to top 130mph. A further enhanced 900 Carlsson – named after famous former SAAB rally driver Erik Carlsson – sported a revised 185bhp version of the 16-valve motor.
It’s this powerplant that provided motive thrust for the final 150 Ruby Red Edition classic 900s, sold in the UK. So called because they were all painted Ruby Red. These run-out 900s featured sumptuous Bridge of Weir Scottish ‘Buffalo’ leather upholstery with Zegna wool inserts for the front and rear seats, as well as colour-coded bumpers and grey (rather than silver) three-spoke alloy wheels.
