Background

Officially badged as the Rover ‘3-litre’ thanks to its straight-six, 2,995cc engine, the P5 was introduced to the world in 1958.

Power steering was available on the options list and the luxuriously appointed (lots of wood and leather) P5 came with all-independent suspension.

The MKII version arrived in 1962, bringing with it another 14bhp and much improved suspension. The Coupé came along later in the year, offering a lower roofline while retaining all four doors.

The MKIII arrived in October 1965, bringing more power and luxury, most notably in the form of individual rear seats rather than the bench-style buyers had been used to.

Overview

This car is offered from outside of the European Union. It has been imported under temporary admission customs bond and is therefore subject to Dutch import tax (9%) on top of the winning bid price. Cars less than 30 years old will pay 10% Dutch import tax plus 21% VAT on the hammer.

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, as their proof of purchase.

This vehicle has been on static display for a number of years and the documented history available is limited to that displayed in our photography section.

We have not tried to start or drive the car, and cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’. Registering the car will be for the winning bidder to do.

As CARS Europe BV is the guarantor of all customs duties and taxes for vehicles within Dutch customs bond, the car cannot be released to the buyer or transporter immediately after the sale. For all enquiries relating to Customs, please contact CARS Europe BV (contact details below).

Purchases will only be released once cleared funds are received. All vehicles must be collected after the payment of funds. All storage charges must be paid in full prior to the vehicle’s collection or onward transportation.

Storage charges payment must be arranged with the storage company. Collection is strictly by appointment only.

Please send a booking email to the storage centre to ensure vehicle(s) are ready at time of collection. Photographic ID will be required at time of collection. If a third party is collecting for you, then written authorisation is required in advance from you and photographic ID of the third party is required at the time of collection. Collection either by buyer or third party is only possible for vehicles within customs bond if applicable import taxes paid are paid to import into country of bonded storage location.

As soon as the seller receives your payment, the accounts department will send a release note to the manager of the storage facility where your car(s) is stored.

CARS Europe BV will contact you just after the sale to confirm onward transport requirements. Direct contact at CARS for enquiries is as follows; Joanna Herlihy, +31 (0) 252 682 526, +44 7483 433912, joanna@carseurope.net.

STORAGE CHARGES - €30 + local VAT per motor car per day commencing from the sixth day following the auction end.

CUSTOMS CHARGES - €500 per motor car (plus applicable permanent import taxes from bond).

Built on 1.7.65, this LHD auto Rover P5 MKII Coupé was bought for the vendor’s collection of static display cars in 2015.

Prior to that, we know that the car was in Germany and Switzerland, where (a document tells us) the car received a €12,000 overhaul of its engine and transmission.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with very little history and no service records.

It was described at the time of its 2015 sale as having a full service history – this is no longer with the car.

We haven’t tried to drive this car and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic status.

Odometer: 40,641 km.

VIN: 743000387

Exterior

Dark green with tan leather upholstery, this car looks reasonable overall and there are very few dinks, dents or creases of any significance on the bodywork.

The chrome work, too, is good, with the exception of the rear bumper, where patches of chrome plating are missing in places and some surface rust has crept in.

The chrome hub caps look good, as do the underlying wheels.

There is some bubbling on top of the driver’s side front wing, at the top and bottom of both doors on the driver’s side and on top of the rear wing on the passenger side.

The rear door on the passenger side has some flaking rust at the bottom.

The front door on the same side has some bubbling and doesn’t open.

There is evidence of some rust in the sills on both sides.

There are a few scratches on the bonnet.

The lights and badging look OK. Some of the chrome and rubber trim around the windows is cracked or, in places, missing.

The wing mirrors are not in place, but you’ll find them in one of the many boxes of parts (and invoices) currently stored in the boot.

Interior

The interior looks to be in generally good condition.

The brown leather upholstery is all very good and looks barely worn. The seats are comfortable, supportive and functional – both front and back.

We think the car may now have the rear seats from a MKIII or PB5, as these are individual seats rather than the bench which originally came with the MKIIs. Rover P5 experts will know better than us.

The door storage pockets are loose and hanging down, although the door cards are otherwise OK.

The headlining is a little stained in places and is damaged around the rear screen. The rear screen itself is scratched in multiple places. The parcel shelf cover has pulled away from its base.

The interior fabric trim around the doors looks a little moth-eaten.

The wood on the door cappings has shed its lacquer and is cracked in a few places.

The steering wheel, gear lever, centre console, dashboard and instruments all look good.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t tried to start or drive the vehicle.

The boot looks to be in reasonable condition and is currently full of spare parts, invoices and other bits and pieces.

Mechanical

Everything in the engine bay is clean, dry and seems to be in its right and proper place.

The undersides of the car show evidence of some rust and flaking in places, but most of what we can see appears to be in reasonable condition.

History

This car comes with very little history and no service records.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

No documents shown in the gallery in any way constitute any kind of licensing or registration certification.

Summary

There is some work to be done to the bodywork, for sure, but we think the underlying quality of the vehicle might well make it a worthwhile investment.

Particularly as there is evidence in the form of invoices that this car has been properly cared for in the past and has had money spent on it when needed.

We think this could be a highly rewarding car for its next owner to own, drive and just enjoy - provided, of course, that the engine and mechanicals prove to be in good working order.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €8,000 - €14,000.
