Officially badged as the Rover ‘3-litre’ thanks to its straight-six, 2,995cc engine, the P5 was introduced to the world in 1958.

Representing a big step forwards in terms of technology, style and construction for the Rover brand, the P5 spanned a total of four generations, remaining in production until 1973.

Power steering was available on the options list and the luxuriously appointed (lots of wood and leather) P5 came with all-independent suspension.

The first three models were powered by a three-litre, inline-six IOE engine carried forward from the Rover P4, whilst the 3 1/2 and P5B models featured the now-iconic Buick-derived 3.5-litre Rover V8 engine, which would go on to be one of the most ubiquitous engines of the British car industry in the latter half of the 20th Century.

Overview

This motor car is being sold as part of an overseas collection. It has been imported under the Bonhams temporary admission customs bond and is therefore subject to the lower rate 5% import tax if the car is to remain in the UK & purchased by a private individual. The 5% is calculated on the final selling price. For example, if the car sells for £4,000, then £200 is added, making the total amount payable of £4,200.

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, and proof that HMRC fees are paid. If the car is subsequently exported abroad within 30 days then these fees are refundable.

A company buying the car will have to pay VAT on the hammer price, as well as duty + VAT.

Lastly, there will be a nominal administration fee of £350 for processing the NOVA application, and payable direct to the shipping company. A completed and processed NOVA will provide you formal proof that all duties & taxes are paid in UK and thus allow you to register the vehicle with the DVLA

In common with the majority of cars in this collection, this vehicle has been on static display for a number of years and there is no history available beyond that displayed in our photography section.

We have not started or driven the car so cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

This RHD auto Rover P5 3.5-litre Coupé was bought for the vendor’s collection of static display cars in 2015.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with very little history and no service records.

We haven’t tried to start or drive this car and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic status.

The car’s mileage on the occasion of its 2015 MoT was 16,571.

Today, the odometer reads: 16,599 miles.

The VIN is: 84506713D.

Exterior

From several metres away, this grand old P5 with its grey over blue two-tone colour scheme looks to be in reasonably decent condition.

Get closer and some fairly significant bodywork issues become apparent – foremost among them, corrosion.

Bubbling, flaking and holes are in evidence in various, and numerous, places along both sills, in the bases of the doors, and in the wheel-arches.

There is also rust in the roof gutters and on top of both wings.

There is a dent and some accompanying scuffs on the driver’s door.

The chrome work and badging, perhaps surprisingly, is pretty good.

The wheels have definitely seen better days.

The rubber trim is perished and cracked in more places than not.

Interior

The interior looks to have fared rather better than its exterior counterpart with the obvious exception of the front seats, which both have splits in the cream leather.

The driver’s seat, in particular, is dirty and stained.

The rear upholstery is in better condition but, like the rest of the interior, needs to be shown a chamois and some soapy water.

The door cards are reasonable and the headlining is OK.

The carpets and mats have succumbed to the attentions of moths and their offspring.

The lacquer on the wood veneers on the dashboard and door cappings is not too bad, but is a little faded and peeling in places.

The steering wheel, gear selector, centre console, dashboard and instruments all look reasonable.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t tried to start or drive the vehicle.

The boot looks to be in decent condition.

Mechanical

Everything in the engine bay looks clean, dry and seems to be in its right and proper place.

The undersides of the car show evidence of some rust and flaking in places, notably in the sills.

Clearly, you’ll want to see for yourself.

History

This car comes with very little history and no service records.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

No documents shown in the gallery in any way constitute any kind of licensing or registration certification.

Summary

There is some work to be done to the bodywork, for sure, but we think the underlying quality of the vehicle might make it a worthwhile investment, provided, of course, that the engine and mechanicals prove to be in good working order.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of £4,000 - £6,000.
