“ Long & Lovely - Requires Recommission ”

We think this is a good example of a hand-built Rolls-Royce Silver Spur limousine and one that has all the typically Japanese hallmarks of diligent curation and care thanks to its former owners - provided, of course, that the engine, electrics and mechanicals are amenable to recommissioning and as good as the rest of it.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €15,000 - €25,000.

Viewing is always encouraged, and this particular car is located in a bonded warehouse near Amsterdam. To arrange an appointment please use the Contact Seller button at the top of the listing. Feel free to ask any questions or make observations in the comments section below, or try our ‘Frequently Asked Questions’.

Background

The Silver Spur was a longer-wheelbase version of the Silver Spirit, the first model in Rolls-Royce’s SZ series, and was in production from 1981 to 1999.

Along with the other models in the SZ series, the Silver Spur was one of the last Crewe-built Rolls-Royces with truly British DNA running through it. The next generations of the ‘The World’s Best Car’ would be built by BMW in a new facility at Goodwood, England.

It featured Rolls-Royce’s familiar four-door monocoque bodyshell, a smooth and powerful 6750cc V8 engine allied to four-speed automatic transmission, all-round independent suspension, adaptive ride control, power steering and four-wheel disc brakes with ABS.

It was the first Rolls-Royce to feature a retractable Spirit of Ecstasy mascot.

Overview

This car is offered from outside of the European Union. It has been imported under temporary admission customs bond and is therefore subject to Dutch import tax (9%) on top of the winning bid price. Cars less than 30 years old will pay 10% Dutch import tax plus 21% VAT on the hammer. If exporting immediately to another country, then tax/duty will only be paid in that country.

The winning bidder will pay €500 customs charge on top of the ‘hammer’ price.

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, as their proof of purchase.

This vehicle has been on static display in the Middle East for a number of years and the only history or paperwork available is displayed in the photo gallery. In all cases the papers shown are photocopies unless otherwise stated. We do not have the original paperwork.

Unless otherwise stated, we have not tried to start or drive the car and cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. The car is not registered anywhere.

It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

As CARS Europe BV is the guarantor of all customs duties and taxes for vehicles within Dutch customs bond, the car cannot be released until full payment received.

All storage charges (€30 + local VAT per day commencing from the sixth day following the auction end) must be paid in full prior to the vehicle’s collection or onward transportation. Collection and viewings are strictly by appointment only.

Please send an email to the storage centre to ensure vehicle(s) are ready at time of collection. Photographic ID will be required at time of collection. If a third party is collecting for you, then written authorisation is required in advance from you and photographic ID of the third party is required at the time of collection.

CARS Europe BV will contact you after the balance payment is received to confirm onward transport requirements. For enquiries about import tax and shipping contact Madam Joanna Herlihy, +31 (0) 252 682 526, +44 7483 433912, joanna@carseurope.net.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, this 1998 LHD auto Rolls-Royce Silver Spur comes with very little in the way of history or service records.

It has a service book containing one stamp added when the car had covered 93,542 kms.

We’re guessing at that because, frankly, our command of the Japanese language is somewhat less than perfect.

We know from the ‘Cornes’ badging that the car was exported new to Japan and we believe it resided on that country’s salt-free roads until it joined the vendor’s collection of static display vehicles in 2013.

The car takes power and the engine spins freely but it doesn’t currently start.

Therefore, our appraisal of it is entirely based on its cosmetic appearance.

The odometer reads 115,267 kms.

Exterior

The coach-built Park Ward bodywork on this Silver Spur Division Limousine is in good overall condition and the car is free of any major dents, dinks or creases.

There are a few minor dinks and scuffs, though.

There are a couple of small dents and a scuff on the front wing near the light cluster on the passenger side.

There are also some small dents and evidence of a previous repair near the front edge of the roof.

The rear bumper has a few scuffs and there’s a small dent above the rear light cluster on the driver’s side.

Some paint has rubbed off on the rear edge of the driver’s door and there are some scuffs on the rear door on the same side.

The rear passenger-side wheel arch has a few scuffs and some traces of touch-up paint can be seen.

The panels, panel gaps and shut lines are consistent and even pretty much everywhere you look, although the rear bumper looks to be drooping down a little bit.

We noticed a short split in the metal at the top of the rear passenger-side door just below the window.

The car’s chrome work, badging, lights, lenses, trim and elaborate fold-out comms antennae on the boot are all OK.

Interior

The cream leather upholstery is in very good condition on both sides of the glass dividing screen.

The door cards are also good, although there’s some creasing on the front passenger armrest.

The carpets and lambswool over-rugs are decent but a bit grubby, as is the headlining, front and back.

The wood veneers have held up well throughout.

There are some blue stains on the leather surround on the centre console in the front cabin, and the leather is scuffed on the central front-cabin DVD housing (situated where you would normally expect to find the centre armrests).

The rear cabin is bristling with all sorts of 1990’s electronic gadgets and gizmos.

The boot is in good condition, too, although the lid won’t stay up.

We can’t make any claims about the full functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t driven the car.

Mechanical

The tidy, dry engine and engine bay look very clean and everything appears to be in its right and proper place.

The undersides of the car seem to have plenty of structural integrity from what we can see.

History

Unless otherwise stated, this car comes with no paperwork beyond whatever photocopied records are shown in the gallery.

No documents shown in the gallery in any way constitute any kind of licensing or registration certification.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.
