PLEASE NOTE THAT AN AUCTION PREMIUM WILL BE CHARGED, ON TOP OF THE HAMMER PRICE, OF 5% (+VAT IN UK AND EUROPE). FROM 16TH JAN'23 THIS APPLIES TO ALL AUCTIONS ON THE MARKET, AND FEES ARE MIN €720 / MAX €7,200.

Evolution not revolution underpinned the Silver Shadow’s metamorphosis to become the Silver Spirit. The basics remained the same with the monocoque bodyshell reworked with wider, lower and decidedly more aerodynamic styling.

The Silver Spirit was the first model in Rolls-Royce’s SZ series and was produced at the Crewe factory from 1980 to 1997.

Power came via the tried-and-trusted all-alloy V8, tweaked for more power and torque. In early carburetted form 198.5bhp and 340 lb-ft was enough to waft this 2,245kg beast forward with consummate ease, while the hydro-pneumatic self-levelling suspension kept passengers cosseted from uneven road surfaces.

Like all of its illustrious forbears it was engineered to the maximum and supplied with fittings and finishes that were second-to-none – Connolly leather, Wilton carpets, walnut veneers… etc.

As ever with Rolls-Royces of the era, the car could be ordered with practically limitless combinations of bespoke options.

Whatever you ordered, you were assured the finest materials and the highest standards of craftsmanship.

Overview

This car is offered from outside of the European Union. It has been imported under temporary admission customs bond and is therefore subject to Dutch import tax (9%) on top of the winning bid price. Cars less than 30 years old will pay 10% Dutch import tax plus 21% VAT on the hammer. If exporting immediately to another country, then tax/duty will only be paid in that country.

The winning bidder will pay €500 customs charge on top of the ‘hammer’ price.

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, as their proof of purchase.

This vehicle has been on static display in the Middle East for a number of years and the only history or paperwork available is displayed in the photo gallery. In all cases the papers shown are photocopies unless otherwise stated. We do not have the original paperwork.

Unless otherwise stated, we have not tried to start or drive the car and cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. The car is not registered anywhere.

It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

As CARS Europe BV is the guarantor of all customs duties and taxes for vehicles within Dutch customs bond, the car cannot be released until full payment received.

All storage charges (€30 + local VAT per day commencing from the sixth day following the auction end) must be paid in full prior to the vehicle’s collection or onward transportation. Collection and viewings are strictly by appointment only.

Please send an email to the storage centre to ensure vehicle(s) are ready at time of collection. Photographic ID will be required at time of collection. If a third party is collecting for you, then written authorisation is required in advance from you and photographic ID of the third party is required at the time of collection.

CARS Europe BV will contact you after the balance payment is received to confirm onward transport requirements. For enquiries about import tax and shipping contact Madam Joanna Herlihy, +31 (0) 252 682 526, +44 7483 433912, joanna@carseurope.net.

VIN: SCAZS0008BCX03405.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, this 1981 LHD auto Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit Limousine comes with no history or service records beyond whatever is shown in the documents section.

It has 9,870 kms on its odometer.

We believe it was exported new to Japan and bought for the vendor’s collection of static display vehicles in 2013.

The car doesn’t start or run at present (but it does take power to the dashboard), so our appraisal of it is entirely based on its cosmetic appearance.

Exterior

As is often the case with luxury cars that have lived all or most of their lives in Japan, this car is in very good condition.

The bodywork is largely devoid of any dents, dinks or creases worth mentioning and the silver paintwork, too, is very good.

The chrome work and wheels are equally impressive, as is the badging, trim and most exterior fixtures and fittings.

But it’s not perfect.

The boot doesn’t close properly and the passenger door isn’t hanging as it should.

There are a few scuffs and scrapes on the rear bumper and front valance.

There is a crack at the base of the windscreen on the passenger side.

Overall, though, it’s survived the passage of time remarkably well and its condition is far more a reflection of its very low kilometres than its 42 years of existence.

Interior

It’s a similar story on the inside, where most of what can be seen is in very fine order.

The main exceptions to this rule are the carpets, which are moth-eaten and threadbare throughout.

Unusually for a Rolls-Royce limousine, there is no dividing screen between the front and rear cabins.

The red leather upholstery is very good and shows the minimal levels of creasing you would expect to find in a car that has yet to cover 10,000 kilometres.

The door cards, headlining and wood veneers are fine.

There is a small patch of scuffed leather on the back of the driver’s seat.

The upholstery in the rear is just as good, including on the rear-facing fold-out seat behind the driver.

The other side panel contains some useful storage space.

The door cards contain fold out wooden picnic tables.

The boot is in excellent condition and its carpets seem to have been less appetising to any attendant moths or their offspring.

The lid on the central entertainment console doesn’t close properly.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t started or driven the car.

Mechanical

The clean, dry engine and engine bay look fine and the undersides of the car appear to have plenty of structural integrity.

History

This car comes with no history or service records.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

No documents shown in the gallery in any way constitute any kind of licensing or registration certification unless otherwise stated.

Summary

Despite needing a little remedial attention here and there, this very unusual, low kilometres Silver Spirit Limousine should have plenty of life left in it - provided, of course, that the engine, electrics and mechanicals are amenable to recommissioning.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €25,000 - €35,000.
