“ Rare - Luxurious - Immense ”

Luxurious, immense and delightfully anachronistic in equal measure, this exceptionally rare Rolls-Royce Silver Spur Limousine by Robert Jankel has the very real combined benefits of low kilometres and Japanese provenance, both of which have made strong contributions to its enduringly impressive condition.

Provided, of course, that the engine, electrics and mechanicals are amenable to recommissioning and as good as the rest of it, we think this magnificent limo should give its next owner many years of rewarding service, quite possibly in the capacity of a wedding or events vehicle.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €20,000 - €30,000.

Viewing is always encouraged, and this particular car is located in a bonded warehouse near Amsterdam. To arrange an appointment please use the Contact Seller button at the top of the listing. Background

The Silver Spur was a longer-wheelbase version of the Silver Spirit, the first model in Rolls-Royce’s SZ series, and was in production from 1981 to 1999.

Along with the other models in the SZ series, the Silver Spur was one of the last Crewe-built Rolls-Royces with truly British DNA running through it. The next generations of the ‘The World’s Best Car’ would be built by BMW in a new facility at Goodwood, England.

It featured Rolls-Royce’s familiar four-door monocoque bodyshell, a smooth and powerful 6750cc V8 engine allied to four-speed automatic transmission, all-round independent suspension, adaptive ride control, power steering and four-wheel disc brakes with ABS.

It was the first Rolls-Royce to feature a retractable Spirit of Ecstasy mascot.

The ultra-rare Rolls-Royce touring limousines such as the one we have here were built to a Robert Jankel design, often in conjunction with coach builders Mulliner Park Ward, of London.

Overview

This car is offered from outside of the European Union. It has been imported under temporary admission customs bond and is therefore subject to Dutch import tax (9%) on top of the winning bid price. Cars less than 30 years old will pay 10% Dutch import tax plus 21% VAT on the hammer. If exporting immediately to another country, then tax/duty will only be paid in that country.

The winning bidder will pay €500 customs charge on top of the ‘hammer’ price.

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, as their proof of purchase.

This vehicle has been on static display in the Middle East for a number of years and the only history or paperwork available is displayed in the photo gallery. In all cases the papers shown are photocopies unless otherwise stated. We do not have the original paperwork.

Unless otherwise stated, we have not tried to start or drive the car and cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. The car is not registered anywhere.

It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

As CARS Europe BV is the guarantor of all customs duties and taxes for vehicles within Dutch customs bond, the car cannot be released until full payment received.

All storage charges (€30 + local VAT per day commencing from the sixth day following the auction end) must be paid in full prior to the vehicle’s collection or onward transportation. Collection and viewings are strictly by appointment only.

Please send an email to the storage centre to ensure vehicle(s) are ready at time of collection. Photographic ID will be required at time of collection. If a third party is collecting for you, then written authorisation is required in advance from you and photographic ID of the third party is required at the time of collection.

CARS Europe BV will contact you after the balance payment is received to confirm onward transport requirements. For enquiries about import tax and shipping contact Madam Joanna Herlihy, +31 (0) 252 682 526, +44 7483 433912, joanna@carseurope.net.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, this 1990 LHD auto Rolls-Royce Silver Spur Limousine by Robert Jankel does not come with any history or provenance beyond whatever photocopies are shown in the documents section.

The car takes power to the dashboard and the engine turns over but, as we haven’t started or driven it, our appraisal is entirely based on its cosmetic appearance.

We believe it entered the vendor’s collection of static display vehicles in 2013.

The odometer reads 16,428 kilometres.

A sticker on the windscreen tells us that the car was living in Japan for some, most or all of its life.

We’re inclined towards the latter because the good condition of the vehicle suggests that it’s spent a long time being looked after properly (which is the Japanese way) in a country where salt is thrown over the shoulders of Sumo wrestlers - not all over the road.

Exterior

This car is, obviously, enormous.

It occupies most of the horizon and an average person would need about 2 minutes to walk around it.

On that walk you would discover that the bodywork is really very decent, that the hectares of black paint still possess a good amount of shine, and that the car is sporting a pair of boot mounted aerials that look as if they’re capable of communicating with someone in a different galaxy.

The wheels, chrome, lights, lenses and most of the exterior trim are good.

There are some light swirly scratches on the bonnet and elsewhere that look like the sort of thing sometimes caused by automated car wash equipment.

There are some scuffs around the driver’s-side wheel arches, front and back, and both front doors have some sort of sticky residue on the rear-facing edges.

Overall, the vinyl roof looks to be in reasonable condition, although there are a few lumps and bumps in the gutters that may or may not signify the presence of underlying bubbling.

We don’t know.

Interior

The front cabin is in good overall condition and, although it inevitably has a rather dated look and feel to it, the individual components have held up well and appear to have succeeded in resisting the pressures of time and use with laudable stoicism.

The grey leather upholstery on the front seats is good and there is very little creasing of any significance.

The wood veneers in the front, aside from a couple of cracks in the lacquer on the dashboard, are also in decent condition, as are the headlining and the front door cards.

The carpets and mats are a bit grubby but they’re not beyond salvation.

The centre console, instruments, steering wheel, etc, are all OK, as is the boot, which could nonetheless do with a good clean.

We can’t make any claims about the full functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t started or driven the car.

The rear cabin, with its unique three-seat lay-out, is bristling with all manner of gizmos and gadgetry from 1990, including the obligatory TV and entertainment console, various phones and other telephonic paraphernalia, and a sizeable fridge.

The central glass partition is notable for bearing an etching/engraving of a pair of leaping tigers.

The windows are adorned with lace curtains.

The rear cabin door cards and headlining are decent.

The black lacquer on top of the entertainment console is cracked in many places.

The carpets, mats and over-rugs in the rear have been visited by some particularly voracious moths and are well past their best.

Mechanical

The clean, dry engine and engine bay look fine and even the metres of sound-deadening material are without rips or tears.

The undersides of the car appear to have plenty of structural integrity and there is no rust of any consequence in evidence as far as we can see.

History

Unless otherwise stated, this car comes with no history or service records beyond whatever photocopied records are shown in the gallery.

No documents shown in the gallery in any way constitute any kind of licensing or registration certification.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.
