Background

The final hand-built Rolls-Royce produced before BMW took control of the company, the Silver Spirit was the first model in the SZ series. It was essentially a significant evolution of the preceding Silver Shadow, which was getting somewhat long in the tooth by the time production ended.

Under the skin were familiar mechanical underpinnings, whilst the monocoque body received some minor aesthetic and dimensional updates.

Beneath the long bonnet sat the much loved and well-proven 6.75-litre alloy V8 engine, lightly tuned to improve the power output. Rolls-Royce were always somewhat cagey with their figures, but 200bhp seems to be the correct figure. It was enough to allow this 2.2-tonne luxury saloon to glide along in a typically paid-back fashion. However, a decent turn of speed was possible when required.

Being a hand-built Rolls-Royce product ensured a level of quality, fit and finish second to none and some might say that the Silver Spirit is one of the last true Rolls-Royces to be built as the company’s founders intended.

Overview

First registered in May 1986, on sale here is a super Silver Spirit which has covered a little over 112,000 miles in its 36-year life.

Our seller bought the car around two years ago from a collector in Scotland who had owned the car for three years plus. The car was transported over the seas to Northern Ireland and has been immensely enjoyed. Used for high days and holidays, the Rolls has been enjoyed by both driver and the many passengers that have travelled in the lap of luxury.

As is so often the case, our seller has a collection of cars and the time has come to rationalise the fleet, so the Silver Spirit must find a new home.

Exterior

Finished in a smart and flattering shade of grey, the Silver Spirit will certainly impress. There are some areas which will doubtless need some attention.

The offside rear wheel arch is in very poor condition and look closely and there are some small areas where the paint is bubbling – under the door handles for example and on another wheel arch.

The front offside wing has some scratches, which may be improved with a machine polish. There are also the expected stone chips in places.

The chrome is in fair condition, and we feel it could be improved with some time spent with some proprietary chrome cleaners. The passenger door mirror does have some noticeable scratches though.

Tyres are a mixture of Avon Turbospeeds and Goodyear Eagles, all with plenty of tread. The chrome hubcaps have deteriorated over the years and are in need of some attention or replacement.

The internal sections of the headlights show signs of age and the fastidious might look to replace them at some stage. We would also be inclined to change the windscreen wiper arms.

The observant will doubtless have noticed the Rolls sports a rather fetching cherished registration number, a nice touch. RRE equals Rolls-Royce enthusiast perhaps…

Interior

A sea of the finest Connolly leather, high quality carpets and a general air of luxury are what makes this Rolls-Royce stand head and shoulders above its obvious rivals. It does not matter whether you are the driver or a passenger, every journey feels like a special occasion.

The leather has a lovely patina and whilst there are some signs of ageing, this all adds to the car’s character and charm. Door cards are fine, though a little grubby in places and the leather on the driver’s door pull is somewhat cracked.

The rather fetching lamb’s wool over rugs have rather faded over the years, so perhaps a new set might not go amiss.

The Rolls has plenty of wood trim for that gentleman’s club atmosphere, but we do notice that there is some lacquer damage and fading in places. All is revealed in our photo gallery.

With regards to the car’s equipment, we are told everything works apart from the interior courtesy lights. We also gather one of the electric windows is a little on the slow side.

There is a large, capacious boot, though the cream carpeting is grubby. Time to break out the carpet cleaner or entrust the work to a professional.

Other points to note are some rust patches in some of the door jams and lifting the carpet reveals some surface rust to some areas of the floor.

Mechanical

We always include pictures in our gallery of a car’s underside and that is the case here. We note a little light surface corrosion to the lower sill areas and the area under the front and rear bumpers. We would suggest a general spruce up might be in order, with plenty of underseal for future protection.

The engine bay has clearly not been prepped for sale and a good clean up in places might well be in order. We have also noticed the under-bonnet sound deadening material is in poor condition and should be replaced.

We are told the car runs and drives as one would expect, with no issues reported. The three-speed automatic gearbox changes smoothly and suits the laid-back nature of the Rolls-Royce.

History

The V5 certificate shows that eleven lucky people have got to enjoy the delights of Silver Spirit ownership before our seller took charge.

Paperwork mainly consists of a raft of old MoT certificates which help corroborate the car’s mileage. The latest test was carried out just last month, the car passing with no advisories recorded.

Our seller’s brother is a mechanic and we gather that in the last twelve months the car has an oil and coolant change, as well as the fitment of new air and fuel filters. Plugs were renewed at the same time. Repairs have been limited to a new exhaust manifold.

Summary

With a level of luxury that makes every journey feel special, the Silver Spirit is immensely usable and comfortable as is. A few cosmetic issues may need to be addressed, but there is fun to be had with this delightful old car, whatever plans you may have.

We estimate the car will sell for between £4000 - £7000.
