Background

Evolution not revolution underpinned the Silver Shadow’s metamorphosis in 1980 to become the Silver Spirit (and in long wheelbase form, the Spur). The basics remained the same with the monocoque bodyshell reworked with wider, lower and decidedly more aerodynamic styling.

Power came via the tried-and-trusted all-alloy V8, tweaked for more power and torque. In early carburetted form 198.5bhp and 340 lb-ft was enough to waft this 2,245kg beast forward with consummate ease, while the hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension kept passengers cosseted from uneven road surfaces.

Like all of its illustrious forbears it was engineered to the maximum and supplied with fittings and finishes that were second-to-none – Connolly leather, Wilton carpets, walnut veneers… etc.

In any field of endeavour products are often given the ultimate compliment by calling it “the Rolls-Royce” of that particular world. That hard-earned accolade has always been gained by direct comparison to the automotive company’s sheer excellence, and cars such as the Silver Spirit.

Overview

This car is offered from outside of the European Union. It has been imported under temporary admission customs bond and is therefore subject to Dutch import tax (9%) on top of the winning bid price. Cars less than 30 years old will pay 10% Dutch import tax plus 21% VAT on the hammer. If exporting immediately to another country, then tax/duty will only be paid in that country.

The winning bidder will pay €500 customs charge on top of the ‘hammer’ price.

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, as their proof of purchase.

This vehicle has been on static display in the Middle East for a number of years and the only history or paperwork available is displayed in the photo gallery. In all cases the papers shown are photocopies unless otherwise stated. We do not have the original paperwork.

Unless otherwise stated, we have not tried to start or drive the car and cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. The car is not registered anywhere.

It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

As CARS Europe BV is the guarantor of all customs duties and taxes for vehicles within Dutch customs bond, the car cannot be released until full payment received.

All storage charges (€30 + local VAT per day commencing from the sixth day following the auction end) must be paid in full prior to the vehicle’s collection or onward transportation. Collection and viewings are strictly by appointment only.

Please send an email to the storage centre to ensure vehicle(s) are ready at time of collection. Photographic ID will be required at time of collection. If a third party is collecting for you, then written authorisation is required in advance from you and photographic ID of the third party is required at the time of collection.

CARS Europe BV will contact you after the balance payment is received to confirm onward transport requirements. For enquiries about import tax and shipping contact Madam Joanna Herlihy, +31 (0) 252 682 526, +44 7483 433912, joanna@carseurope.net.

This 1982 LHD auto Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit was bought for the vendor’s collection of static display cars in 2012.

The VIN - SCAZS0007CCX04708 – tells us that this car is, indeed, a 1982 Silver Spirit.

This matters because there are one or two aspects of the car’s appearance that might otherwise lead to some confusion.

Namely, the Bentley wheels, the ill-fitting Rolls-Royce front grille, the aftermarket stick-on plastic badges on the ‘C’ pillars and the apparently aftermarket ‘RR’ embroidery on the seats.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with no history or service records.

We haven’t tried to drive this car and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic status.

Odometer: 147,392 km.

Exterior

The bodywork is devoid of any major dinks, dents, creases or folds but is far from exempt from marks and blemishes.

The white paintwork is, we imagine, a respray. We say this because there is overspray in places and a few paint runs in others – particularly on the driver’s side rear wing and boot lid.

The front bumper is dropping down on one side and, as mentioned, the Rolls-Royce grille is a rather imperfect fit with the bodywork.

There are some cracks and stone chips around the front grille and scuffs along both passenger side doors.

There are some scrapes, scuffs and signs of previous repairs at the top of the front passenger side wing.

The black painted sills have cracks and lumps in the paint on both sides.

The front passenger door has dropped slightly and doesn’t close or open smoothly.

There is some corrosion evident inside the hinges of the same door.

Interior

The cream leather upholstery is in decent condition, front and back, although, as stated, we can’t believe that the embroidered ‘RR’ motifs are factory originals.

The veneers on the dashboard are cracked and crazed here and there and missing completely in places on the door cappings.

The headlining, carpets and mats are OK.

Part of the handle mechanism is missing on the driver’s door.

The interior trim around the windows and doors is loose or hanging down in numerous places, exposing some rather messy glue underneath. There is a small tear on the armrest on the front passenger door.

The carpet at the base of the door cards is a little ragged.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t tried to start or drive the vehicle.

Mechanical

The engine bay is a little dusty but everything appears to be in its right and proper place.

There are some lumps and bumps under the black paint on the sills and some rust dust can be seen on various suspension components. In general, though, the undersides look to have a decent amount of structural integrity.

History

This car comes with no history or service records.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

No documents shown in the gallery in any way constitute any kind of licensing or registration certification.

Summary

Clearly, there is some work to be done to this car in order to return it to its former glory. From what we can see, though, it’s primarily cosmetic and might not require too much time or effort.

Provided, of course, that the engine and mechanicals can be successfully recommissioned.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €3,000 - €5,000.
