“ British Luxury Behemoth - Massive 6.75L V8 - No Reserve ”

The Rolls-Royce Silver Spur is a mechanically sound car, which has everything one would expect from a car of its kind but is now more approachable. This 1983 Rolls-Royce Silver Spur Limousine is expected to have a value between $15,000 and $25,000. Going by the chassis code, it doesn't look like a factory-made limousine, but it appears to be made well, and with a huge bunch of paperwork accompanying it, one can be assured of not being clueless about its past.

Background

In the 80s, if you were in the market for a Rolls-Royce sedan, two new cars would've caught your fancy: the Silver Spirit and the Silver Spur. Separating the two was largely the wheelbase, with the Silver Spur being offered a longer wheelbase. The platform was shared with the preceding Silver Shadow, and these continued to be offered for nearly two decades — four iterations were available in that period. The Silver Spur (or Spirit) I was on sale for nearly the entirety of the 1980s.

Overview

This is Rolls-Royce we're talking about, which means it'd be wrong to assume that the Silver Spirit/Spur range ended with just these two. Of course, there were bespoke and coach-built models, some of which were limousines. Listed with us on The Market is a 1983 Rolls-Royce Silver Spur I with the identification code SCAZN42A8DCX07526 — this corresponds to North American model with fuel injection, 1983-manufactured car in Crewe, and LHD. It is an extended wheelbase version, which in all likeliness left the factory as the standard car, and had the modification done in November 83. The car has 112,000+ miles on the odometer and comes with a sizeable bundle of paperwork, which includes old invoices, original manuals, service details, etc.

Exterior

With only the wheelbase differentiating the two, the Silver Spur shared its looks with the Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit. Available for a total of four generations from 1980 to 1999, not much changed in the overall appearance of the Silver Spur. The 1983 example here is a Silver Spur 1 but with an elongated chassis. While the increased length grabs nearly everyone's attention, it's not a bad example elsewhere, either. Its age is visible through paint defects (also note the bodywork under the rear windshield), but apart from that (and the missing indicator from the headlamp console), the car looks alright.

Interior

While still based on the same platform as the Silver Shadow, the Silver Spirit and Spur were more modern, and that was reflected in the interior, too. The Silver Spur's extra wheelbase opened up more room inside. In the case of the limousines, it was a different ballgame altogether. Luxury and space both were turned to eleven. This is pretty much the case with this 1983 Silver Spur limousine. Not just space but the seating capacity was also increased with the help of rear-facing seats. The combination of blue leather with wood veneer on the dashboard is very likable and matches what was specified from the factory. The interior does show its age, but not too badly. The rear not just benefits from the extra room and seats but also a standalone Alpine cassette and CD player. There's also a glass divider between the front and the rear sections of the cabin.

Mechanical

For the new (in 1980) Silver Spur, Rolls-Royce decided to use the same platform as the Silver Shadow. A unibody (as all new Rolls-Royces after the Silver Cloud series) chassis housed the 6.75-liter V8 with power sent to the rear wheels using a GM-sourced automatic. The Silver Spirit/Spur had disc brakes all around and independent suspension. This 1983 example does look clean on the whole, but some surface rust is visible on the body.

History

The Silver Spur I was launched in 1980, alongside the short-wheelbase model, the Silver Spirit. It was on sale for nearly the entire decade, before being replaced by the MkII version. The range stayed available as new cars in the Rolls-Royce lineup through four generations. In total, in the two-decade-long period, Crewe produced and sold nearly 20,000 examples of the Silver Spur and Silver Spirit combined.
