Background

Introduced in 1965 as a replacement for the much-loved but ageing Silver Cloud III, the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow was a true ‘milestone’ car in the Rolls-Royce story, representing a number of firsts for the brand as well as holding several commendable titles throughout its production run.

Representing the first unibody-constructed production car in their range, the Silver Shadow also saw independent rear suspension and disc brakes used on all four corners for the first time, giving customers enormous confidence in the safety of their vehicles.

Naturally, comfort was paramount to the success of the Silver Shadow, with Rolls-Royce licensing Citroen’s hydro-pneumatic suspension system for use in the vehicles.

Initially installed on all four corners, it was discovered that the majority of the adjustment took place in the rear - due to varying passenger and luggage loads - and, therefore, from 1969 the self-levelling suspension featured on the rear axle only.

Although the saloon was the standard offering, buyers could also order rather rakish two-door variants from James Young or Mulliner Park Ward, with a drophead coupé iteration arriving in 1967.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, this 1974 LHD auto Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow comes with no history and few service records.

VIN: SYESRX22331

The car’s odometer reads 60,638 kms.

We believe it entered the vendor’s collection in 2017.

With the proviso that we haven’t tried to start or drive this vehicle and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic condition, we think this 1974 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow is in decent condition but has a number of what appear to be largely cosmetic issues to address.

Exterior

The bodywork seems to be in reasonable condition in general.

The panels are straight, even and free of any significant dinks, dents or creases that we can see, and the panel gaps and shut lines seem entirely consistent and even.

The pale metallic green paintwork is fine in some areas and less so in others.

The chrome and exterior trim are in good condition, although the chrome strips along the car’s flanks are a little dented and warped in places.

The lights, lenses, badging and other fixtures and fittings have endured the passage of time fairly well.

The wheels are in good order, as far as we can tell.

There are some scuffs and scratches on the passenger side front wing and on the corner of the same front wing outside the indicator housing.

A patch of rough, discoloured paint is evident on the bonnet and there are paint chips on the front wing on the driver’s side and a long scratch beneath the side indicator on the same flank.

There are various scratches, scuffs and scrapes on both driver’s-side doors and a patch of missing paint on the rear wheel arch on the same side.

Additionally, there are some paint chips on top of the rear wing on the driver’s side, some scuffs on the rear bumper, and some paint missing (and rust present) around the boot closure.

Interior

The interior is broadly comparable to the exterior in that it is really fairly good overall but there are some cosmetic issues to consider.

The only creasing is on the driver’s seat and even that is minimal. There are no cracks, splits or tears that we can see anywhere and the cream leather seats, front and back, are comfortable, supportive and, as far as we can tell, functional.

The carpets are in reasonable condition and there are Rolls-Royce over-mats in their protective plastic bags.

The wooden veneers on the dashboard have some cracks and the lacquer is peeling or missing in places from the door cappings.

The headlining is intact but discoloured towards the rear. The door cards are decent and all the Rolls-Royce toggles, stops, levers, switches and buttons appear to be fine, although, as we haven’t tried to start or drive the vehicle, we can’t make any claims about their full functionality.

The rear, passenger-side door has a disassembled ash-tray, the constituent parts of which are to be found in the storage pouch behind the front seat.

The boot contains a rather rusty-looking spare wheel and there is some rust dust in evidence under the carpet.

Mechanical

The undersides look to have a decent amount of structural integrity.

Everything in the engine bay looks clean, dry and in its right and proper place, although the sound-deadening material is rather ragged.

History

This car doesn’t come with any history or comprehensive service records. The document in the photo gallery is a photocopy, it is not original.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

None of the paperwork shown in the gallery in any way constitutes any kind of licensing or registration certification.

Summary

We think this Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow appears to be in decent condition and has the benefit of low kilometres given its age. Provided, of course, that the engine, electrics and mechanicals prove amenable to recommissioning, we think the job of returning this majestic vehicle to its former glory may well prove to be a rewarding and enjoyable one.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €6,000 - €10,000.
