Background

Whenever a new Rolls-Royce appears, it is the manner in which tradition is balanced against innovation that most intrigues the public, and the Silver Seraph's introduction in 1998 was no exception.

There was certainly no lack of new components in the new car, with almost nothing carried over from its Silver Spur predecessor.

The most significant change was the adoption of BMW engines, the Seraph's power unit being the 5.3-litre, 60-degree V12 of the range-topping 750i.

The Silver Seraph became the first V12 Rolls-Royce since the pre-war Phantom III.

The ZF five-speed automatic gearbox was likewise sourced from the 750i.

Changes to the body seemed less radical but were no less interesting. The styling represented a conscious attempt to recall the looks of the Silver Cloud, with a level of build quality that was higher than ever.

Just 1,676 hand-assembled cars were made during the Seraph’s short four-year production run from 1998 to 2002.

VIN: SCALA60E0XCX01484.

Odometer Reading: 77,463 kms.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with no history or service records.

With the proviso that we haven’t tried to drive this car and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic condition, we think this Silver Seraph is a good example of a very fine, hand-built luxury vehicle from a manufacturer whose name is synonymous with quality, exclusivity and prestige.

It is in very decent overall condition - aside from one or two exceptions - and appears to be entirely authentic and original.

We know that it entered the vendor’s collection of static display cars in 2013.

Exterior

The bodywork appears to be more or less pristine, except, of course, for the fact that the rear bumper section seems to have dropped down and, possibly as a consequence, the boot no longer closes properly.

That aside, the panels are straight and even, the bodywork is free of any other significant flaws, and the panel gaps and shut lines seem consistent and even.

The white paint finish has retained all of its shine and lustre.

The chrome and exterior trim are in fine condition, as are the lights, lenses, badging and all exterior fixtures and fittings. The car has retained what is presumably dealership badging on the boot lid.

The chromed wheels, too, look to be in good order. Although they are not without scuffs in a few places.

There are a couple of scuffs on the rear bumper and a few scratches and paint chips in the usual places – the wheel arches, door edges and front valance.

The rubber trim around the windscreen is warped and lifting.

Interior

The cream leather interior is in pretty good condition all round, although the passenger seat cushion has a number of tiny nicks and scratches on it and there are a few creases and superficial cracks on the driver’s seat back rest bolster.

The carpets and blue sheepskin over rugs are OK (the rugs are a little threadbare around the edges in places) and there are additional white and grey-flecked furry over-rugs still in their plastic bags.

The leather upholstery in the rear seems fine, as do the door cards and glossy wood veneers.

The mobile phone cradle on the centre console is broken, as is the centre console ashtray.

We can’t vouch for the full functionality of instruments, dials, buttons, knobs, switches or levers because we haven’t driven the car.

Mechanical

Everything in the engine bay seems to be in its right and proper place and entirely as you’d expect to find.

The undersides of the car appear to have a good deal of structural integrity.

History

This car doesn’t come with any history or service records.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

None of the paperwork that might be shown in the gallery constitutes any kind of licensing or registration certification.

Summary

From what we can see, this Silver Seraph is in decent condition and, aside from issues with the rear bumper, the boot lid and some cosmetic concerns with the interior, the car looks to have plenty to offer - provided, of course, that the engine, electrics and mechanicals are as good as the rest of it.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €20,000 - €30,000.
