Background

The Silver Cloud is a luxury vehicle produced by Rolls-Royce between 1955 and 1966. It served as the flagship Rolls-Royce model during that period and was built to replace the Silver Dawn. It went through three iterations during its production run. The Silver Cloud III was first shown to the public in October of 1962 at the Paris Salon.

Compared to the Silver Cloud II, the Silver Cloud III was able to shed around 220lbs, and gained in power. Specifically, the Silver Cloud III received 2-inch carburetors, one quarter of an inch larger than the carburetors equipped on the Silver Cloud II. This increased the compression ratio to 9:1, reflecting the higher octane levels of premium fuel in major markets, although the lower 8:1 ratio remained as an option.

The engine also received a nitride hardened crankshaft to reflect the extra power being generated, and in response to reports of broken crankshafts in earlier V8 Silver Clouds. External changes were the shift from two headlights to four, and an increased slope of the hood to correspond with the reduced height of the radiator grille.

Overview

This specific Silver Cloud III is particularly rare. It looks rather different from the regular Silver Cloud IIIs because it’s a Fixed Coupe coach built by none other than H.J. Mulliner Park Ward. Furthermore, out of all the Silver Cloud III's coach built by Mulliner, this vehicle is only one of forty with left hand drive.

Evidence of coach building can be quickly identified by the headlights. On a normal Silver Cloud III, the headlights are perfectly horizontal to one another. However, on a Mulliner Park Ward Silver Cloud III, the headlights are slanted. Slanted headlights were a very popular design element on many Italian built cars from the same period.

Out of the 2,044 Silver Cloud IIIs built, approximately 100 of them were coach built by Mulliner Park Ward.

Exterior

This model is finished in Bone White paint with burgundy pinstriping along the body from bumper to bumper on both sides. There are two fog lights attached to the front bumper. While the vehicle looks excellent, the paint is not as flawless as it appears to be.

There are a few chips in the paint around and directly on the driver's door, as well as a very large scuff line. The paint is cracking between the top of the door trim and the roof of the car, and there are cracks at the driver's side rear fender. The fuel door has numerous tiny scratches, and there is also a sizable chip at the left corner of the trunk line.

There is some minor surface corrosion beneath the passenger side of the rear bumper, as well as a scratch just above the rear bumper on the passenger side rear fender. The door sills look particularly clean, and the trunk looks extremely tidy for a car rapidly approaching its 60th birthday.

Interior

The interior of this Silver Cloud III is black on black. The black leather seats up front show signs of creasing, but nothing more extreme than what would occur from regular use. The carpets up front could use a little bit of rehab, but no major refurbishing looks necessary.

The rear bench appears to be in excellent condition, but the leather on each of the door panels have seen better days. The leather dash pad has a handful of scuff marks up above the gauge cluster, and the passenger footwell looks a bit of a mess. All in all this interior looks excellent, but a bit of extra love would really do wonders.

Mechanical

Thanks to how well this vehicle has been maintained, it is safe to say that there is no major damage under the car. However, there is evidence of surface corrosion in a few areas. Most notably towards the rear on the passenger side of the vehicle.

History

From what we can gather, this car was delivered as a US spec vehicle to its first owner in October of 1964. It was equipped with the following: an automatic transmission, power windows, a speedometer in miles per hour, a “Made in England” number plate, Windtone horns, the export type rear number plate, and Dunlop white sided tubeless tires.

The owner received it and kept it in Los Angeles, California. Fast forward quite a few years and the car went up for sale in May of 2006 and was then re-registered with the state of California in March 2007. In September of 2007, the car was purchased by the seller.

Summary

Simply put, this is an exciting opportunity. The Silver Cloud and all of its variations helped cement Rolls-Royce's reputation as a leader in the luxury automotive category. Anything approaching 60 years of age is going to need some touching up, but the fact is this: this car is one of one hundred built.

The Mulliner name is still extremely relevant in the luxury automobile space and this car is a testament to that quality and a shining piece of a rich history of building custom vehicles. This is a must own for any luxury car fans who understand how wonderful the vocation of coach building is.

It should be noted that this vehicle has been on static display for a number of years and there is no history available beyond that displayed in our photography section.

We have not started or driven the car so cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

Please note that the title for this vehicle is in transit.
