Background

The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud emerged in April 1955 as the much-awaited replacement for the Silver Dawn.

The design was much more modern than the pre-war designs customers had become familiar with and for which the firm had become known.

Featuring a pressed steel body on top of a straightforward box-section chassis, the doors, bonnet and boot lid were all formed of aluminium rather than steel to save weight.

The 155bhp straight-six engine was not the most powerful but it was exceptionally smooth. Mated to a four-speed General Motors Hydra-Matic automatic gearbox, the engine was capable of propelling the Silver Cloud along at a stately but perfectly acceptable pace.

The Silver Cloud II arrived in 1959 with a much more powerful 6.2 litre Rolls-Royce V8 engine under the bonnet.

Chassis No: LSWC108

Engine No: 54CS

Odometer: 51,399 km.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with no history or service records.

With the proviso that we haven’t tried to start or drive this car and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic condition, we think this 1960 LHD Silver Cloud is an outstandingly good example. It has survived its 62 years of life very impressively and is in time-warp condition, inside, outside and underneath.

We know that it entered the vendor’s collection of static display cars in 2012.

We’re guessing from the Hatteras Marlin Club badge on the windscreen that at some point this car was living in North Carolina, USA.

We know that it was built in 1960 and that it was probably exported new. It was first registered in the UK in 2008.

Its MoT certificate in 2008 records the mileage as 51,101 km.

Exterior

Presented in two-tone brown and gold, the car looks very good from every angle.

The bodywork is largely free of any idents, bumps or creases.

The shut-lines and panel gaps are even and consistent, although the fuel filler flap is not perfectly flush with the bodywork.

The paintwork is impressively lustrous and shiny in general, although there are a few scratches and scuffs here and there, including on the driver’s side front wing near the bonnet.

The wheels are good all round and most of the chrome work is in excellent condition.

The exterior trim has endured remarkably well. The lights, lenses and badging are mostly fine.

It really is an impressive looking vehicle and one that appears to have been the recipient of a great deal of care and attention over the years.

Interior

The interior appears to be just as impressive as the exterior. There’s really very little to complain about.

The cream leather upholstery is undamaged and uncreased, both front and back.

The carpets and mats are good, as are the door cards and the headlining.

The wood veneers on the dashboard look fine, and the steering wheel, gear selector and instruments all seem to be in first-class condition.

There are a couple of minor scuffs on the rear picnic table on the driver’s side.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t tried to start the vehicle.

The interior trim seems to have endured remarkably well, too.

There is really not much to find fault with on the inside of this car.

Mechanical

Everything we can see looks to have a good amount of structural integrity. There is worrying corrosion anywhere as far as we can tell.

Everything in the engine bay is in its right and proper place and seems to be clean and dry.

History

The car doesn’t come with any history or service records.

This car must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

Any paperwork shown in the gallery is a facsimile and in no way constitutes any kind of licensing or registration certification.

Summary

Apart from one or two very minor cosmetic issues, we’d say that this Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II is in exemplary condition and far better than either its age or odometer reading would normally dictate.

Provided, of course, that the engine and mechanicals are as good as the rest of the car, we think this magnificent vehicle will probably need little more than basic recommissioning and should reward its next owner with years of classy, distinguished and rather grand motoring pleasure.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €25,000 - €35,000.
