Background

The Silver Cloud is a luxury vehicle produced by Rolls-Royce between 1955 and 1966. It served as the flagship Rolls Royce model during that period and was built to replace the Silver Dawn. Overview

Very little changed externally moving from the Silver Cloud I to the Silver Cloud II, but the engineering is a different story. Power steering became standard likely due to the new engine bringing the car to a curb weight of 2.1 tons, and electric windows became a potential option. The ventilation system was greatly improved over a number of years with various changes, and the interior layout was streamlined multiple times as well.

Exterior

The build sheet for this Silver Cloud II tells us it rolled off the assembly line painted black just as it is now. For the most part, the black paint currently on the car shows quite nicely. There are various rock chips and hairline scratches around the vehicle, and only a few at that, but a walkaround of the vehicle shows no major visible damage to the body panels. The OEM hubcaps present nicely, but some tire shine would really improve the wheels’ appearance.

Interior

The inside is more weathered than the exterior. The leather front and back seats show signs of creasing and some of those creases have turned into legitimate cracks in the leather. Tan carpets blend in nicely with the seats but could definitely use a deep cleaning. The dashboard is legible, and the wooden inlays mounted around the inside have aged quite nicely compared to the seats. Furthermore, there is deterioration in the headliner that at one point may have been caused by insects. Overall, this interior is in solid, operational shape, but some restoration efforts would easily breathe new life back into the vehicle.

Mechanical

The Silver Cloud II was given a new Rolls Royce developed 6.2L V8 which dramatically improved performance. This increased the top speed to 114 mph, and greatly increased acceleration as well as torque.

History

We have access to several documents that tell us about this Silver Cloud’s history. The original chassis specification sheet tells us that the car rolled off the production line painted black with a tan interior. The ownership card says that the car was at one time kept at the UK Embassy in Geneva. From there, the Silver Cloud briefly became the property of a US Colonel at the United States Embassy in London, England. By 1975, the car found a new owner and relocated to Nashville, Tennessee. Three years later, the car moved with a new owner to Cookeville, Tennessee. A classified ad on the vehicle suggests it moved to Madison, Tennessee sometime later.

Summary

The Silver Cloud and all its various generations are chiefly responsible for Rolls-Royce’s reputation. This is a car that is loved around the world for its handsome styling and oftentimes brilliant ride quality. Today’s example is in great shape. The black exterior coach built by Mulliner Park Ward is wonderful, but the interior has seen better days. This is a great opportunity to win a Rolls that looks fantastic on the outside and deserves new life on the inside.

Estimated $35,000 - $50,000.
