Background

The Silver Cloud is a luxury vehicle produced by Rolls-Royce between 1955 and 1966. It served as the flagship Rolls Royce model during that period and was built to replace the Silver Dawn. It went through three iterations during its production run. The Silver Cloud II was introduced in 1959.

Overview

Very little changed externally moving from the Silver Cloud I to the Silver Cloud II, but the engineering is a different story. The Silver Cloud II was given a new Rolls Royce developed 6.2L V8 which dramatically improved performance. This increased the top speed to 114 mph, and greatly increased acceleration as well as torque. Power steering became standard likely due to the new engine bringing the car to a curb weight of 2.1 tons, and electric windows became a potential option. The ventilation system was greatly improved over a number of years with various changes, and the interior layout was streamlined multiple times as well.

Exterior

The exterior to this SCII is white with red pinstriping. There are some inconsistencies in the pinstriping and a handful of hairline scratches in various places around the outside. There is a sizable scratch around the edge of the trunk, and a small chip over the front passenger side wheel arch. There does appear to be some bubbling around the driver’s rear wheel arch, but it looks very minor. The chrome around the car is straight and untarnished, and the white hubcaps are neat and tidy.

Interior

The inside of this Silver Cloud II is exquisite. The inside of this Silver Cloud II is bright red and looks wonderful thanks to the muted white paint and red pinstriping. The floor mats up front could benefit from a deep cleaning, but the front seats look as if they’ve never even been sat in. The trend of clean seats continues into the back seat as well. The wooden dash looks excellent, and all the gauges are clean. The door panels are neat and tidy, and the ceiling of the car is perfectly taut.

Mechanical

The underside of this Silver Cloud II is clean. There are plenty of spots of dried dirt but that’s about it. Suspension components are tidy, and the exhaust only exhibits slight discoloration.

History

There are a number of documents on the car that tell us quite a lot about its early life. For starters, the original build sheet suggests to us that the car wasn’t always white and red. Apparently, this Silver Cloud rolled off the assembly line painted Midnight Blue and was paired with a Fawn leather interior. Special options included constructing the car to US specifications, electric windows, and a Fawn lambskin rug for the rear. The car was delivered to Rolls Royce Inc., New York, in 1961, and the first buyer had the car delivered to sunny Los Angeles, California. The car was still in California by 1973 when it was sold to the next owner who brought it to Illinois. With the documents available to us, we gather that the seller acquired this vehicle in March of 2013.

Summary

This Silver Cloud II is in solid condition. Sure, it might need some TLC, but it would really be a stretch to even call this car rough around the edges. White on red is a proven combination that looks great on almost any car and this Cloud II is no exception. This is a wonderful opportunity to secure a British luxury icon at a great value. Do not miss out.
