Background

The Silver Cloud is a luxury vehicle produced by Rolls-Royce between 1955 and 1966. It served as the flagship Rolls Royce model during that period and was built to replace the Silver Dawn. It went through three iterations during its production run. The Silver Cloud II was introduced in 1959.

Overview

Very little changed externally moving from the Silver Cloud I to the Silver Cloud II, but the engineering is a different story. The Silver Cloud II was given a new Rolls Royce developed 6.2L V8 which dramatically improved performance. This increased the top speed to 114 mph, and greatly increased acceleration as well as torque. Power steering became standard likely due to the new engine bringing the car to a curb weight of 2.1 tons, and electric windows became a potential option.

Exterior

Finished in a wonderful two-tone silver and black paintjob, the paint appears to be smoothly applied around the vehicle. There are a handful of chips present in the paint, the two most noticeable of which are located on the driver’s rear quarter panel. Chrome around the car is in good condition showing no wrinkles or dents. Glass is in nice condition as well with no major cracks or chips. The hubcaps are particularly clean, and although remaining tire tread is decent, we always recommend a new set. Overall, the exterior is in excellent shape even though a ding here and there hold it back from perfection.

Interior

Completed with gray leather, the interior looks slightly tired, but in solid condition, nevertheless. Starting down low, the carpets look to be in need of a strong detailing but show no damage up front or in the rear. All carpets lay flat in their respective positions. Moving up, the leather front and rear benches have quite a bit of staining – especially in the rear – but show no holes or tears. The rear bench does show moderate creasing, and along the passenger side of the vehicle, some of those creases are beginning to create legitimate cracks in the leather. The door panels also exhibit quite a bit of staining, and the rear door panels are even a bit chewed up at the very bottom. Wood trim is next up, and a majority of the pieces involved have been nicely preserved. There are no major chips or scratches to speak on aside from the area where the pieces of the dash pad connect. That gap seems to have aged roughly and is rather pronounced among what is otherwise well-kept wood. The black Bakelite steering wheel is in solid condition, and all of the gauges mounted behind it are easily readable. Overall, the interior has some areas that deserve immediate attention, but as whole, condition inside the car is solid.

Mechanical

Lifting either side of the long hood reveals an engine bay that is equally as tired as the interior. There is surface corrosion present towards the bottom. Under the body, the frame sports of layer of surface corrosion that is commensurate with the age of the vehicle, and the exhaust does show some discoloration.

History

We have a host of copies of the documents and build sheets available for the car. The build sheet tells us the car was originally black and gray, with a gray interior. The car was delivered from the UK to Rolls-Royce New York, and the first owner took the car down to Florida. Based on the documents available to us, we understand that the seller took ownership of the vehicle in April of 2013.

Summary

The Silver Cloud and all its various generations are chiefly responsible for Rolls-Royce’s reputation. This is a car that is loved around the world for its handsome styling and oftentimes brilliant ride quality. Today’s example is in great shape. The two-tone paintjob is wonderful, but the interior has seen better days. This is a great opportunity to win a Rolls that looks fantastic on the outside and deserves new life on the inside. We at The Market are highly confident this Silver Cloud II will have few issues hitting its $40,000 - $60,000 estimate.
