Background

The Phantom V marked the arrival of a new luxury saloon by Rolls-Royce for the top end of the market, replacing the Silver Wraith. While not as rare as the previous Phantom (the Phantom IV), which is said to be strictly available to a select few clients, the Phantom V was for a relatively wider customer base — a whole lot of 516 examples are said to be produced from 1959 to 1968. Still an unquestionably rare car, backed by unmatched luxury, well-engineered underpinnings, and some neat coachbuilt versions.

The Phantom V marked the arrival of a new luxury saloon by Rolls-Royce for the top end of the market, replacing the Silver Wraith. Still an unquestionably rare car, backed by unmatched luxury, well-engineered underpinnings, and some neat coachbuilt versions.

Overview

The Phantom V is from an era when Rolls-Royce had begun shifting standard-bodied cars from its factory, but as a range-topping offering, it had to be more special. Listed here is a 1960 Rolls-Royce Phantom V in the pre-facelift avatar. It also happens to be one of the very few cars with coachwork by 'Park Ward' and not 'Mulliner Park Ward', as it's a pre-merger example. The 5LAT62 code signifies a left-hand-drive model made in 1960-61. The odometer reads 92898 miles.

Exterior

The Phantom V was launched alongside the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II, which is pretty apparent from the overall styling. Of course, it's much bigger and more imposing, the Phantom, and one doesn't even need to park them side-by-side to realise that. The car got an updated front-end (and slight mechanical changes) from the '62 model onwards, making this pre-facelift one an even rarer example.

There are dings and cracks in the paint, some trim items (including the Spirit of Ecstasy) missing, and visible surface rust.

Interior

While based largely on the Silver Cloud II, the Phantom V had a substantially longer wheelbase. As a result of which, and quite fittingly so given the car's positioning, the Phantom doesn't falter in delivering luxury and space inside. Especially for the rear passengers. The cabin is what you'd expect from a car of its stature: great mix of expensive materials, put together unlike anything else one would've seen in the segment, and given utmost care to ensure that the rear-seat passengers get possibly the most comfortable travel experience of their lifetime — day in and out.

The cabin looks original, but it's in need of repair: the dashboard looks clean but is missing some parts, some of the door cards are missing and show the rot underneath. The headlining looks intact and there's a disconnected fan blower unit on the dashboard, too. Despite the age and use, the seats look alright, with the most prominent signs of wear on the driver's seat only. The large boot has some tools, the missing door card from the cabin, and a spare wheel.

Mechanical

Powering the Rolls-Royce Phantom V was a 6.2-liter, naturally aspirated V8 engine. A four-speed automatic gearbox was standard and so were hydraulic brakes. Opening up the side-facing split hood of this 1960 Phantom V, one can see the chassis plaques, one of which proudly says 'Made in England' while the other gives the car's serial number: 5LAT 62. There's no damage visible underneath, although signs of rust aren't absent.

History

While the Rolls-Royce Phantom IV is said to be made only for a select few, the Phantom V didn't come with such a constraint. Of course, its high price wasn't just for the brand or the badges. The exclusivity is such that the chances of running into an identical Phantom V would have been pretty low. Plus, with just 516 cars made globally, it'd require one heck of a coincidence for that to happen!

Summary

The Rolls-Royce Phantom V was an important car of its time, even though it wasn't supposed to be the most easily attainable car out there. This example looks like one that can be restored and brought back to its full glory, since the starting point isn't bad. There aren't many cars like this one, especially the pre-facelift, Park-Ward-made examples. But even if there were, the kind of motoring experience a Rolls-Royce Phantom V offers is a reason good enough to consider one.
