Background

The world was watching very closely when the Rolls-Royce Phantom VII emerged blinking into the light in 2003.

This was the first Rolls from BMW and, it turned out, it would be the model that effectively rescued the marque and would give its Teutonic rival, Maybach, a figurative but nonetheless lively slap across the cheek with a pair of bespoke, English duelling gloves.

Introduced in 2009, the Rolls-Royce Ghost was intended to do battle with cars such as the Bentley Flying Spur and V12 variants from Mercedes Benz.

As such, it was pitched at a level below the Phantom (although there’s pretty much no level above the Phantom).

However….

"With the Ghost, Rolls-Royce has followed Bentley's lead and not been shy about making its car substantially more powerful and therefore quicker than the flagship model above it." – Autocar.

Its name evoking that of the Edwardian-era Silver Ghost, the Rolls-Royce Ghost was conceived as a smaller and more affordable alternative to the range-topping Phantom, whose practical and aesthetically pleasing rear-hinged back doors it inherited.

The prototype, coded '200EX', first appeared in 2009 at the Geneva Motor Show, with the almost unaltered production model making its debut later that year at Frankfurt.

The Ghost was powered by a 6.6-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine, which delivered its 562bhp via a ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox and, despite the car’s not inconsiderable weight (5,490lb), could propel it to 60mph (97km/h) in a frankly staggering 4.7 seconds.

The Ghost Series II arrived in 2014 with a number of upgrades and changes including re-sculpted LED headlights, enlarged front air intakes (better cooling for the brakes), revised bumpers, redesigned front seats, and new struts, dampers, steering gear and hydraulic axle bearings.

It could be ordered in practically any colour and finish and tailored to suit tastes ranging from discreet and sophisticated to, well, the opposite.

Rest assured that the very low mileage and virtually show-room fresh model we have with us today is a particularly handsome and classy example.

Overview

This 2016 Ghost was bought new by the vendor, a man we know from the previous auction of his Aston Martin V8 Vantage.

Needless to say, he is something of a connoisseur of rare and prestigious automotive exotica, and his commitment to doing the right thing by his very expensive cars included having a large purpose-built heated garage constructed for the Ghost.

He is only selling because he doesn’t feel that the car is getting enough use.

Fair enough.

We have driven the car and can report that it goes about its majestic business with a unique combination of abilities that’s actually quite difficult to reconcile with the known laws of physics.

How can something so large, heavy and packed with wood, leather and other luxury trimmings be quite this fast, nimble and rewarding to drive?

It’s so silent and smooth it makes the average Tesla sound like someone throwing a drum kit off a cliff.

When you put your foot down, it sets off like a cheetah in pursuit of lunch.

Potholes become an irrelevance as the car wafts and shimmies effortlessly over the many shameful and unpleasant aberrations littering British roads today.

It is supremely comfortable, powerful, capable and impressive.

It really is quite an experience.

And, because this example has covered just 11,335 miles from new, it still drives precisely as the master craftsmen and engineers of Goodwood intended.

The car has been specified to the vendor’s tastes which, we’re happy to report, align very neatly with ours.

The colour combination of Silver Sand over Madeira Red is bespoke.

We’ve not seen another example like it.

Other options include:

  • Chromed visible exhausts
  • Camera system
  • Panorama sunroof
  • Seashell interior with Consort Red contrast
  • Burr Walnut veneer
  • Coloured steering wheel (Consort Red)
  • Split IP top
  • Seat Piping (Consort Red)
  • Comfort entry system
  • Driver Assistance System Three

(includes high beam assist, head-up display, lane departure warning system, infra-red night vision and active cruise control with ‘stop and go’).

We know that the car’s Scorpion tracker system is alive and well because the vendor was alerted whenever we drove it.

This car is in exceptional condition, outside, inside and underneath - and it’s really not hard to see why it cost just shy of £260,000 in 2016.

Exterior

The bodywork is untroubled by any dinks or dents of significance anywhere that we can see and the two-tone paintwork has retained plenty of shine and lustre, accentuating the car’s stately lines, curves and dimensions to optimum effect.

The shut lines and gaps are as impressively crisp, consistent and even as you’d hope and find to expect in a car of this quality.

The wheels are fine, as are the matching Goodyear ‘EfficientGrip’ (how long did it take them to come up with that name?) run-flat tyres.

The car’s various sections of chrome trim are pristine as are the badging, lights and other exterior fixtures and fittings.

The only evidence of use we could find anywhere on the exterior were a small scratch, one or two stone chips on the front valance and a small dent in the lower chromed grill area.

Everything else is squeaky clean and minty fresh, as far as we’re aware.

Interior

Pretty much everything in the gentlemen’s club-like interior is in as-new condition.

The dark and glossy burr walnut veneers on the dashboard and door cappings wouldn’t look out of place on a Sheraton table and are free of anything so vulgar as a scratch or blemish.

The ‘Seashell’ leather upholstery has yet to earn so much as a crease, let alone any patina, and the seats are sumptuously comfortable, cosseting and supportive, front and back.

The carpets, mats, door cards and headlining are all beyond reproach.

We didn’t tweak every lever, press every knob or flick every switch, but those we did tweak, press and flick did as they were told without delay or complaint.

We noticed that there is a hairline crack to the plastic cover on the electronic hand-brake button.

The vendor tells us that everything works as intended, with the codicil that he almost certainly hasn’t explored every capability and menu option available (we doubt if anyone other than a Rolls-Royce engineer ever has).

Unsurprisingly, the boot is in equally impressive condition.

Mechanical

The engine and engine bay look exceptionally clean and dry. Everything appears to be in its right and proper place.

The undersides of the car look to have a great deal of structural integrity, as you would expect.

History

This wonderful car comes with a fully stamped service book, with all work to date carried out by main dealer Rolls-Royce Motor Cars of Birmingham.

It was last serviced on 5.10.23.

The car comes with a current V5, a clear HPI check and its original handbooks and manuals.

Summary

Well, what an extraordinary vehicle.

If you want a car that gives you a visceral sense of occasion every time you drive it, look at it or just think about it, then you really couldn’t do better than this.

Very low miles. Very good condition. Very capable.

Very special.
