Mark's review

Mark Livesey - Consignment Specialist Message Mark

“ It requires a full recommission of course, but it's a done just 22,682 miles in its lifetime. ”

Comes with original pack of manuals and books, including the service history book.

Background

The original Corniche convertible had been a major success for Rolls-Royce, so the revival of the model in 1999 after a gap of five years caused considerable excitement.

By this time, Rolls-Royce was owned by BMW, but the Corniche V had been developed while the British firm belonged to Volkswagen, which would keep both the Bentley brand and the Crewe factory.

It is historically significant as the new Rolls-Royce developed under the auspices of VW, and the last built at Crewe. Thus, the Corniche used the 'old' Rolls-Royce / Bentley 6.75-litre pushrod V8 in its turbo-charged form with an astounding 544 ft-lb of torque.

A stiffer body shell, new hydraulic engine mounts, lighter steering, softer suspension and special Avon tires all contributed to characteristics more at home on the boulevard, which is exactly what its target market expected. At the time of its release, it was the most expensive Rolls-Royce on offer, with a base price of $359,900.

When the last Corniche was rolled off the production line in August 2002, it marked the end of Rolls-Royce manufacturing at the Crewe factory, which would henceforth only produce Bentleys.

When production ceased in 2003 a total of only 374 Corniches had been built.

Overview

VIN: SCAZK29E8YCX68077.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, this 2000 LHD auto Rolls-Royce Corniche does not come with any history or provenance beyond whatever photocopies are shown in the documents section.

It does, however, have its original pack of manuals and books, including the service history book.

That’s how we know it was delivered new to a dealer in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The service book also tells us that the car had a new odometer fitted when it had 20,566 miles on the clock and that, by October 2010, it had travelled a further 2,068 miles as recorded by the new odometer.

Today, the mileage reads 2,116, which makes the total distance covered by this car just 22,682 miles.

All of which helps explain the car’s very good condition.

We know that the car was last serviced in Zionsville, Indiana, in 2010. We believe it entered the vendor’s collection two or three years after that.

The car takes power but we haven’t started or driven it so our assessment of it is made purely on the grounds of its cosmetic appearance.

This car is offered from outside of the European Union. It has been imported under temporary admission customs bond and is therefore subject to Dutch import tax (9%) on top of the winning bid price. Cars less than 30 years old will pay 10% Dutch import tax plus 21% VAT on the hammer. If exporting immediately to another country, then tax/duty will only be paid in that country.

The winning bidder will pay €500 customs charge on top of the ‘hammer’ price.

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, as their proof of purchase.

This vehicle has been on static display in the Middle East for a number of years and the only history or paperwork available is displayed in the photo gallery.  In all cases the papers shown are photocopies unless otherwise stated. We do not have the original paperwork.

Unless otherwise stated, we have not tried to start or drive the car and cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. The car is not registered anywhere.

It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

As CARS Europe BV is the guarantor of all customs duties and taxes for vehicles within Dutch customs bond, the car cannot be released until full payment received.

All storage charges (€30 + local VAT per day commencing from the sixth day following the auction end) must be paid in full prior to the vehicle’s collection or onward transportation. Collection and viewings are strictly by appointment only.

Please send an email to the storage centre to ensure vehicle(s) are ready at time of collection. Photographic ID will be required at time of collection. If a third party is collecting for you, then written authorisation is required in advance from you and photographic ID of the third party is required at the time of collection.

CARS Europe BV will contact you after the balance payment is received to confirm onward transport requirements. For enquiries about import tax and shipping contact Madam Joanna Herlihy, +31 (0) 252 682 526, +44 7483 433912, joanna@carseurope.net.

Exterior

The bodywork is very good indeed and the car is mercifully free of any dents, dinks, ripples, creases or folds.

The panels, panel gaps and shut-lines are everything you would hope and expect to find on a car of this quality, and the white paintwork still looks mostly very good indeed.

The beige hood appears to be in equally good condition as do the very shiny chromed wheels, and the trim, badging and other chrome work.

There are some scuffs around the rear bumper on the driver’s side.

There are also one or two scuffs on the front bumper and a scuff and very shallow (virtually imperceptible) indentation on the bonnet.

There is a patch of mis-matched touch-up paint (or something that looks like it) on the passenger door.

We tried and failed to get the boot to close properly.

Interior

Aside from some signs of wear on the outer bolsters of the driver’s seat, the interior is far more a reflection of the car’s low mileage than its age.

The door cards, roof lining, carpets and mats all look very decent, although the roof lining has a little run in the fabric on one side at the rear and seems to not be fitted correctly at the base of either ‘C’ pillar. You’ll no doubt want to see for yourself and reach your own conclusion.

The lambswool over-rugs are looking rather threadbare in places, particularly in the front.

The wood veneer inserts have resisted the temptation to crack or shed their lacquer.

The lid for the central storage box between the front seats is loose and unattached at the rear.

We can’t make any claims about the full functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t started or driven the car.

The boot is in very decent condition.

Mechanical

The tidy, dry engine and engine bay look very clean and proper, and everything appears to be present and correct.

The undersides of the car appear to have plenty of structural integrity from what we can see.

History

Unless otherwise stated, this car comes with no paperwork beyond whatever photocopied records are shown in the gallery.

No documents shown in the gallery in any way constitute any kind of licensing or registration certification.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

Summary

This seems to us to be a very impressive, low-mileage example of one of the most expensive and luxurious cars ever made.

Provided, of course, that the engine, electrics and mechanicals are amenable to recommissioning and are as good as the rest of it, we think this fabulously indulgent car should give its next owner many years of uniquely classy motoring.
