At the end of the 1940s, Citroën brought the famous Type H van into production. Revolutionary in its design, thanks to its modernity, a self-supporting body and front wheel drive, it was a considerable commercial success. Funnily enough, in 1944 the Pons plan proposed by the government (not to say imposed) asked Renault, Peugeot and Chenard & Walcker to build light vans, while Citroën was ordered to build light trucks. They decided not to follow these instructions.

At the end of the 1950s, Renault marketed the direct competitor of the Type H for the first time: the Estafette. The specifications required economies of scale and included the use of Renault parts, so the Estafette was initially offered with the Dauphine engine (albeit rear-engined). Later in production, the Billancourt engine was replaced by the Cléon-Fonte, first in 1108cc and then in 1289cc.

The Estafette was offered in 4 body styles: the classic van body, the high van body, the covered pickup and the microcar (9-seater minivan). After more than 500,000 units were sold, in 1980 Renault replaced the Estafette with the Renault Trafic.

Overview

The vehicle presented today is a 1980 Estafette in a cream and pink ice cream truck livery. It is therefore an Estafette from the last year of production, equipped with the Cléon-Fonte 1289cc engine and capable of carrying 1000kg of load.

Exterior

Externally this Estafette is in average condition. Despite a good appearance at first sight, the bodywork is the weak point of this Estafette. Corrosion is visible in several places, especially at the rear. The future owner will probably be able to drive it as is. The last technical inspection dates from 2018, and the vehicle has only covered about 2500 km since then, which suggests that it could pass a new technical inspection without too much difficulty. Of course, there is also the possibility of restoring the van to its former glory.

Interior

Inside, the cabin also has an average appearance. The driver's seat cover shows signs of fatigue. The glass of the speedometer is broken, the rubber mat has tears, and the partition in front of the pedals is also showing its age. Apart from that, the interior needs a thorough cleaning. The inside of the doors shows perforating corrosion.

As for the rear section, it seems to be in better condition despite some details that could be revised. It is equipped with a stainless steel counter and worktop. The floor is lined with fake parquet. Two electrical outlets are located near the side door. Also, it seems that there are two refrigerators installed, although we do not know if they work.

Mechanical

The 1289cc Cléon-Fonte engine (from the Renault 12) located between the passengers appears to be in good working order, showing no worrying signs of leakage or any particular defects. Since the photos were taken, the owner has undertaken work which includes changing the clutch, cardan shafts and brake cylinders.

Surprisingly, the condition under this Estafette seems to be better than that of the bodywork. Despite some corrosion marks, which are inevitable for a car over 40 years old, it is in relatively good condition. A careful owner will have the opportunity to strip and repaint the underbody to check its condition and give it a good look. It is not surprising that the vehicle was able to pass a technical inspection in 2018 with no corrosion defects noted.

History

Little is known about the history of this Estafette. According to Histovec, it changed ownership in 1999, then in 2013 and again in 2016. The current owner acquired it in 2021 but has not registered it since. The history of the technical controls is also present on Histovec, with no less than 19 passages, showing the consistent evolution of the mileage from 1992 (67,745km) to 2018 (91,194km).

Summary

The Estafette represents a period of 30 glorious years that many people are nostalgic about today. Presenting an unmistakable French charm as well as a robustness that is beyond reproach, it is understandable that this is now considered a collector's item by many.

Presented without a reserve price, we believe that its estimate of €8,000 - €12,000 will be justified at the end of the auction.
