Background
Autocar called the Clio 200 Cup the ‘most accomplished hatch this side of 20 grand’. When evo magazine took it to their annual fest to pit it against a very capable set of high-performance cars, the Renaultsport hot hatch not just managed to land itself a more favourable position than the Focus RS (of that time) but it was in the top five cars for eCOTY 2009. That’s high praise indeed, but anyone who’s been to track days in one won’t be surprised to learn this.
The Clio 200 was an updated version of the Renault Clio 197, and the Cup moniker turned it into a seriously potent track day machine. Lighter than the standard car, the Renaultsport Clio 200 Cup also features quicker steering and stiffer dampers and springs. In comparison to its predecessor, it’s more eager to pick up pace, say the experts, mainly due to a retuned ECU and uprated mechanicals. For many, it’s one of the greatest hot hatchbacks of all time.
