Background
The Renault 6 was first introduced to the public during the 1968 Paris Motor Show as a more refined and spacious alternative to the divisive Renault 4 and quickly surpassed Renault's expectation for the model despite some criticism for its underpowered engine and the recently introduced 33.3% VAT on new vehicles.
The car shares a lot of technical solutions with the Renault 4, including the parts of the frame and floor pan. The two cars originally also shared the same engine, the little 845cc Bellancourt unit with a maximum power output of roughly 34hp and its longitudinally mounted configuration with the gearbox placed in front of it. Both cars equally featured a dashboard-mounted gear shift lever, with the first gear facing the driver and the peculiar asymmetrical wheelbase given how the independent suspension was the same for both: with transverse-mounted torsion bars and an anti-roll bar at the front and transverse-mounted torsion bars at the rear.
