Background
Like many a British car manufacturer of the day, Rover in the mid 1990’s was the mystery box at the heart of a game of corporate pass the parcel. The Rover Group was taken over by BMW in 1994, shortly after the introduction of the P38A model Range Rover. With the P38A having been developed on a shoestring under British Aerospace ownership, BMW soon resolved that it would be a short lived model. As a result a project named “L30” was launched by a joint Rover / BMW team to get a successor Range Rover in the works tout suite. During the development of the L30, however, the Rover shaped parcel was passed on again – this time to Ford. A clause was framed to retain BMW’s involvement in the L30 project until it reached full-scale production, luckily. The project was renamed “L322”and the third generation of Range Rover was launched in 2001. The pre-2005 models featured many components from the 5 and 7 Series BMWs, to include engines, transmissions and many of the electronic components.
With the involvement of the uber-engineers at BMW, the L322 was a triumph and a million miles from the clunky, outdated P38A. Construction was now by way of strong monocoque together with a fully independent suspension with advanced interconnected air springs. The interior had been improved dramatically with the design inspiration reportedly coming from high end yachts and their high end fixtures and fittings. The new Range Rover was tremendously well received benefitting greatly by comparison with its half hearted P38A predecessor. Top Gear would opine “the L322 feels like a car you really can live with every day. It's not too big to be useable, but it's wonderfully refined and practical and a terrific long-distance thing, as well as engaging in the countryside, on roads and off. Solid gold.”
In the intervening years the L322 has endeared itself to many, thanks to this unbeatable original prowess combined with now fully depreciated values. Much loved by the “celebrity farmer” set, both Harry Metcalf and Jeremy Clarkson still own L322s and the opening titles of “Emmerdale” even features one. If that isn’t recommendation enough for anyone, we don’t know what is!
