Paul's review

Paul Hegarty - Consignment Specialist Message Paul

“ Arguably the best Range Rover made… great looking, generally very reliable and supremely capable on and off road ”

This example is passing this way for a third time and each time we see it, we are left impressed and charmed in equal measure.

Background

Like many a British car manufacturer of the day, Rover in the mid 1990’s was the mystery box at the heart of a game of corporate pass the parcel. The Rover Group was taken over by BMW in 1994, shortly after the introduction of the P38A model Range Rover. With the P38A having been developed on a shoestring under British Aerospace ownership, BMW soon resolved that it would be a short lived model. As a result a project named “L30” was launched by a joint Rover / BMW team to get a successor Range Rover in the works tout suite. During the development of the L30, however, the Rover shaped parcel was passed on again – this time to Ford.  A clause was framed to retain BMW’s involvement in the L30 project until it reached full-scale production, luckily. The project was renamed “L322”and the third generation of Range Rover was launched in 2001. The pre-2005 models featured many components from the 5 and 7 Series BMWs, to include engines, transmissions and many of the electronic components.

With the involvement of the uber-engineers at BMW, the L322 was a triumph and a million miles from the clunky, outdated P38A. Construction was now by way of strong monocoque together with a fully independent suspension with advanced interconnected air springs. The interior had been improved dramatically with the design inspiration reportedly coming from high end yachts and their high end fixtures and fittings. The new Range Rover was tremendously well received benefitting greatly by comparison with its half hearted P38A predecessor. Top Gear would opine “the L322 feels like a car you really can live with every day. It's not too big to be useable, but it's wonderfully refined and practical and a terrific long-distance thing, as well as engaging in the countryside, on roads and off. Solid gold.”

In the intervening years the L322 has endeared itself to many, thanks to this unbeatable original prowess combined with now fully depreciated values. Much loved by the “celebrity farmer” set, both Harry Metcalf and Jeremy Clarkson still own L322s and the opening titles of “Emmerdale” even features one. If that isn’t recommendation enough for anyone, we don’t know what is!

Overview

This example is a “first generation” L322 and hence featuring plenty of premium BMW goodies. What’s more this is a UK specified and supplied 4.4-litre Vogue model featuring the respected BMW M62 V8 engine and ZF five speed automatic transmission.

This superb example of the L322 oeuvre was acquired by current owner Simon in December 2023 when the Range Rover was sold via a Bonhams Cars Online auction. At the point of sale the Range Rover had covered around 61,500 miles. On the day of our latest shoot the electronic odometer was reading 62,297 miles underscoring the light use to which Simon has subjected it. Despite this Simon has expended around £2,000 on it during his ownership having the ZF gearbox serviced and refreshed and on advisories associated with the most recent MoT. The previous, and sixth, keeper also happened to buy the Range Rover via a Bonhams Car Online auction in July 2022. At that time the Range Rover had covered 54,252 miles making this a very modestly used example with a solid provenance indeed.

Exterior

Our Vogue presents in a Zambezi Silver colourway, always a popular choice for a range topping L322. The paintwork appears to be original and seems to be in a fine overall fettle and still able to provide a lustrous shine in all the key areas. Given the vintage and type of vehicle, the presence of some minor blemishes here and there is, perhaps, unsurprising. There are a couple of minor scrapes noted, together with a few stone chips and some small areas of paint bubbling in places. These have been captured by our photographer for your review. Cabin glass and light lenses all appear original, clean and clear. A pair of chromed, tubular side steps are fitted as are useful and protective, rigid mudflaps.

The Vogue sits on its original five, double spoked 20-inch, seven spoke alloy wheels. These are predominantly in a great condition for their age. There is a minor amount of paint loss between the spokes as well as patch of kerb rash on the front nearside wheel. Finished in bright silver, the wheels are shod in a mixed set of all season tyres in a 255/50 R20 configuration.

The vendor also tells us that on top of the Dinotrol protection, the car was extensively Lanoguarded in preparation for the recent winter season.

Interior

BMW certainly brought their A-game to the design, fit and finish of the L322 with it being on a different level to its old fashioned predecessor. This example is finished in swathes of Parchment hued leather together with accents of anodised alloys and even some dark wood veneer for good measure. The superb front seats feature big vertical, stitched box pleats which are vaguely reminiscent of the 1970 original Range Rover’s imposing items. These are infinitely more luxurious, however, and fully electrically adjustable, heated and blessed with multiple memory settings. The rear bench is identically trimmed and is fitted with a folding centre armrest incorporating cup holders. The two outer seats are even two-stage heated, too.

The door cards are finished in Parchment hued leather together with quality door furniture and commodious door pockets. The carpets are courtesy of the original, hard waring grey items which are protected by tailored, heavy duty rubber over mats. The light headlining consists of a light flocked material an and a glass electric sunroof with accompanying shade is fitted.

A set of crystal clear instruments are housed in a hooded binnacle directly ahead of the drive and nestle behind an impressively multifunctional steering wheel. The centre console features some interfaces that a BMW 5 Series driver of the period may recognise as well as the satellite navigation screen and interface for the audio system, the screen does not seem to be operating how ever the controls for the radio still do function. Behind the gear selector lever are the chunky toggles for the off-road systems and settings.

The boot retains its original carpet set which appears to be in a good, condition. This area is accessed via the signature Range Rover split tailgate which usefully doubles as a covered bench seat for all those rainy days at the races, polo or regatta. The underfloor area retains the full tool set, spare wheel and tyre and removable towing hook. The overall condition of this impressive interior presents in a superb condition for a 21-year old sports utility vehicle.

Mechanical

This L322 is fitted with 4.4-litre V8 M62 petrol engine as widely used in the BMW 5 and 7 Series cars of the period. Originally rated at 282 bhp and 325 lb ft of torque makes this Vogue an effortless performer with its five speed ZF transmission taking care of routing this output to all four wheels. This combination endowed this large SUV with a sub 10 second 0-60 mph time and a top speed easily in excess of 120mph. That somewhat misses the point of the L322 Range Rover, however. The tuneful and flexible V8 mated to the five-speed ZF automatic gearbox is more suited to wafting and refined progress regardless of the conditions.

The under-bonnet presentation of this example appears good overall and highly original. The big 4.4-litre V8 is mostly obscured by engine covers, however. The original data plates are present and correct. For a vehicle with such peerless offroad credentials, the underside of the looks solid with no signs of significant corrosion or damage to be concerned with.

History

The current V5 is present in the name of the owner and detailing its five previous owner history to date. The current, advisory free MoT is also present in hard copy and is valid until May 2026. Numerous previous MoTs are also present.

The original book pack is present to include the service booklet. This contains a pre-delivery inspection stamp and five further service stamps covering mileages from 11,883 to 61,518. Additional to this there are numerous invoices present detailing work undertaken at all stages of the L322’s life. Highlights include the comprehensive gearbox refresh from 2024 as well as one for extensive suspension recommissioning from March 2025.

Summary

In many ways the L322 Range Rover set the trajectory that all the subsequent models have continued to follow. The unitary body, sophisticated suspension and vastly improved interior and build quality moved the Range Rover up at least one league if not several. In some ways it took BMW’s fleeting intervention to set the scene for Ford and then Tata Motors for what the Range Rover could ultimately become. No wonder Clarkson and Metcalf wouldn’t be caught dead without one.

This example is passing this way for a third time and each time we see it, we are left impressed and charmed in equal measure. Light recent use still means this 21 year old SUV boasts a significantly below average mileage and number of keepers. The condition remains significantly above average, too. With much recently spent to keep this L322 up to standard, now is a great time to join the Cotswold farmers and put yourself behind the multifunction steering wheel of this familiar Range Rover Vogue.
