Background

The 1999 Range Rover P38 Holland & Holland is a special edition of the second-generation Range Rover and was created in collaboration with a famous British gunmaker. This particular model is known for its luxurious features and exclusivity. Holland & Holland, much like Range Rover is a name synonymous with adventure, style and exquisite craftsmanship.

Unveiled at a gala ceremony in the grounds of Northwood in Middlesex, initial plans were to produce only 400 units, 93 of which were destined to stay on British soil.

All models produced were finished in Tintern Green Metallic and had body colour bumpers and side skirts with a Holland & Holland badge featuring on the tailgate. They also have body colour paint on the inside of the spokes on the 18’’ Hurricane wheels. The seats are finished in a dark ‘bridal leather’ with walnut piping and wood-grain leather. The words Holland & Holland are inscribed in gold on the wood dash trim in front of the passenger seat. A two-tone brown and black leather steering wheel and two tone door trim with dark leather to match the seats. More importantly, and the main party piece is found in the boot of the Range Rover. A cabinet that holds a variety of various liquors and glasses for when you’re feeling thirsty when out hunting game as well as three smaller compartments. One to hold your firearm, another for shells and the final for miscellaneous items. Should that be gun oil, cartridges or treats for your retriever after has returned you, your spoils.

Overview

This Range Rover P38 4.6 HSE was first registered in 1999 and has clocked just 123,509 miles since new, although in recent years the vendor informs us that it has been used rather sporadically and for it’s intended purpose.

The car has had 9 previous keepers, with the current vendor owing the car since 2022.  The car comes with an extensive folder of paperwork that documents all of the work completed in the past and present. There are numerous receipts for maintenance work completed, which include oil changes, disc and pad changes and a plethora of other maintenance work.

In the few years that the vendor has owned the vehicle, he has completed very few miles in it. We are informed that during that time it has served him faithfully as the perfect shooting companion.

Exterior

As you walk around the P38 it becomes very clear that a lot of time, attention and care has been taken into consideration to ensure that this car is presented at its absolute best for it’s target audience. Land Rover really did a stellar job. The Tintern paintwork looks fantastic in the light with its different hues. In some lights it reflects a deep green, whilst others an electric blue.

The front end is relatively free from stone chips, and looks superb. The chrome Range Rover lettering that spans the bonnet looks good and as far as we could tell is free from any pitting or corrosion. Exactly as one would expect.

Bodywork appears to be in great shape too. The flanks are free from ripples and the panel alignment looks to be straight. As far as flaws go, there really is nothing to note, that we could see. There are some small scuffs edges of the wing mirrors and we noticed that on the lower valance that the paint has started to crack and there is also some paint missing on the drivers side of the valance.

As these cars become older, the headlights become susceptible to sun damage and start to fade and haze, leaving the lenses looking yellow and generally a little worn.  We are pleased to report that we saw no sign of this on either headlights, nor on the lenses at the rear of the vehicle.

The P38 sits on 18” Hurricane alloy wheels and look fantastic. Each wheel is finished in an silver with the inserts finished in the body colour, Tintern Green. Generally speaking, the alloys are free from stone chips and curb rash but there are some imperfections to be aware of. That said, they appear to be as if they’re still in they’re original form and not been refurbished.

Interior

Upon opening the door and stepping inside the Range Rover, you’re instantly greeted with a cabin that is immersed with quality materials. What makes these vehicles so special is that the interior is reflective of how Holland and Holland would produce their products. Woodwork is walnut and oiled like the gun stock, with intricate detailed metal engravings. The leather throughout was textured to mimic the wood grain like the Holland and Holland luggage. Interior handles were given a gunmetal blue finish, the same as a finished gun barrel.

The door cards present well with the leather and wood veneer free from any degrading that we noticed. Holland and Holland markings within the wood are really a stand out, it’s a feature that elevates the P38 to a new level, especially when it comes to attention to detail.

The front seats are presented in bridal leather with walnut piping and wood-grain leather effects and are in reasonably good condition. The drivers side is free from any wearing, especially in high traffic areas such as the bolster, which is generally the first place to wear through. Both front seats have an electric tilt memory function that works as intended as well as heated seats. Ideal for those cold days when out catching game. The rear bench looks to be in good condition with no signs of rips or tears that we noticed and the fold out walnut picnic tables in the back look fantastic too.

Carpet and headlining throughout the vehicle looks plush with no reports of damage or them going threadbare. Branded floor mats are present in the Range Rover.

The instruments and dials within the cockpit are working as they should do. The centre console features an assortment of buttons and switches that control things such as the driving modes, headlights, heated seats, and your usual temperature control settings.

The boot of Range Rover is where the main party piece is kept. The cabinet is in serviceable condition with the wood looking fantastic and the felt not showing any wear or any stains.

Generally speaking the overall condition of the interior is one that is representative and inline with the age and milage of the vehicle. Take a moment to appreciate the images as the craftsmanship is impeccable.

Mechanical

We are informed that the engine has recently benefitted from a complete overhaul within the last few months with paperwork to confirm this. Equally there are ample amounts of service stamps within the service book which shows that the vehicle has been regularly maintained. We did move the vehicle around whilst photographing it and can confirm that it runs and idles well. The engine is smooth on tick over and we heard no unusual sounds. The gearbox selected ‘D’ and ‘R’ without any fuss. Air suspension is said to be functional and working.

History

Accompanying the vehicle, is the V5C plus a folder which includes receipts, MoT’s and parts supply invoices, as well as the original brochures. Multiple stamps in the service book from main dealer or specialist workshops.

The Range Rover comes with a comprehensive service history and MoT which is valid until September 24. There are receipts for it once having been converted to be used for LPG but the current owner informs us that he has since removed it.

Summary

The collaboration with Holland and Holland adds a really unique appeal to this Range Rover, especially for those interested in British luxury and craftsmanship. With only 93 created for the UK market this is not only an exceptionally rare Range Rover but arguably one of the most luxurious Range Rovers to be produced.
