Background

Often credited as “the car that saved Porsche” the first-generation Porsche Cayenne was produced between 2002 and 2010 in various levels of trim and with numerous engines available.

Without a doubt, however, the talking points of the range were the GTS and Turbo models, the former of which was powered by a whopping great 4.8-litre V8, and benefitted from a significant weight reduction over the heavier Cayenne S, with the GTS model being not only more powerful, but lighter than its lower trim-level brethren.

In addition to the upgraded power plant and crash diet, the GTS also gained an aerodynamic body kit and larger 21-inch wheels. With a quoted 0-62 sprint time of 5.7 seconds, the family-sized Cayenne was hot on the heels of the 911 of the period, which is an impressive feat considering it can carry all the family in well-appointed comfort.

Overview

This particular example is a 2008-registered vehicle fitted with the popular automatic Tiptronic transmission with push-button gear changes. Finished in GTS Red over a half-leather interior with Alcantara detailing and headliner, this is very well-specified example of the ‘super’ SUV.

From the factory, this Cayenne GTS specification included an upgraded BOSE stereo, embossed headrests, PCM module and more. The adjustable air suspension also allows an impressive amount of height adjustment, ranging from a low, sleek setting to a maximum-height configuration that allows this behemoth to tackle almost any terrain you could throw at it.

Having spent a number of years in Jersey - apparently in the possession of a well-known Lord, but without any evidence to back this claim up - this Cayenne has been meticulously maintained throughout its lifetime, and has only had two previous owners during its 46,250 miles of use.

During the last three years in the vendor’s ownership - the second of the vehicle’s two owners - the car has been sparingly used, always garaged and is now purely being sold due to the vendor downsizing their impressive collection of cars and spending more time in sunny Spain.

Please note that the number plate currently shown is not included in the sale. The number plate will be HS08 KJN.

Exterior

The GTS Red paintwork stands this example apart from a ‘basic’ Cayenne with ease, especially in conjunction with the model-specific body kit.

On the whole, the exterior is in great shape, though there are a few marks and wear-and-tear areas notable on the bodywork which we’re told has been regularly pampered and waxed.

Specifically, in addition to the usual smattering of stone chips to be expected from a vehicle of this age, there are numerous small areas of lacquer peel visible along with some more notable scuffs and gravel rash to various areas, all of which have been detailed in the gallery below.

If we were being super critical (as we always aim to be) we’d suggest polishing the twin exhaust tips as these have coked up over the years, while the black side trims need reconditioning to bring them back to their best, along with the outer window rubber trims. There are also a couple of dents in the silver boot loading lip, though these are relatively hidden during regular use.

All four wheels are in excellent condition, with no signs of any kerbing that we noted during the photoshoot or our short test drive.

Interior

Inside, the cabin of this Cayenne is in remarkably good condition, given its age and use as a family vehicle.

From the driver’s seat, the instrument panel is in great shape, as is the top of the dash, steering wheel and centre console. The steering wheel has a few minor signs of wear, though these are minimal and would likely be easy to remedy.

The door cards are in excellent condition with no scuffs visible or large marks, though the Alcantara detailing on the handles requires a thorough cleaning or restoration due to its regular use discolouring the material.

The boot is impressively clean and clear, while the headlining and carpets are also in excellent shape. This does not look or feel like a 13-year-old interior, and it’s all the better for it.

From our short test drive, it would seem that all systems and switches in the cabin work exactly as they should. The air suspension adjustment was smooth and responsive, while activating sports mode also correctly adjusts the suspension setting simultaneously. The heated seats are excellent, and the PCM system appeared to be working as expected.

Mechanical

As far as we can see, underneath this Cayenne appears to be in very good condition, with only very light marks to the sump guards and lower bumper sections, suggesting this example has never traversed any particularly tricky terrain.

The chassis itself looks to be in good nick, though there is the usual surface ‘bloom’ on items such as the suspension and exhaust components, however, there are no records of any corrosion-related issues in the MOT history, which should put any potential bidder’s minds at ease.

The engine bay itself is in very good condition, though there isn’t much to see here, on account of the numerous covers designed to ‘tidy up’ the engine bay. What we can say is that there are no notable leaks or misting issues that we’ve picked up, nor that we’ve been made aware of.

On the road, this V8-powered mammoth drives like a car half of its size. The ‘get up and go’ is remarkable especially in sport mode, with an impressive exhaust note from the 4.8-litre V8 to complement the performance.

During our short test drive, the vehicle was happy to start, idle and drive, with no notable alignment issues, brake pull or other problems to speak of. The Tiptronic gearbox was happy to shift up-and-down the range as required.

Summary

In generally great condition throughout and with a rich history and wonderfully clean interior, this Cayenne GTS is an excellent example of one of the most controversial but most important vehicles in Porsche’s history.

Capable of carrying the whole family and a ridiculous amount of luggage in serene comfort while showing a clean pair of heels to cars far smaller and lighter, this 2008 Porsche Cayenne GTS makes an incredibly strong case as the ideal all-round, everyday vehicle for the performance car enthusiast.

Having considered its condition, history and specification, we expect this Cayenne GTS to reach in the region of £19,000 - £25,000.
