Background

Announced in 1991, the 968 was the fourth of Porsche's family of front-engined sports cars. Restyled along 928 lines, the 968 retained its 944 predecessor's basic mechanical layout while improving on its specification, featuring a 2,990cc engine and six-speed manual transmission as standard.

Porsche's big four-cylinder now boasted 'Variocam' variable valve timing and produced 240bhp, which was good enough for 100kph in about 6.3 seconds.

Stripped-out Club Sport and racetrack-ready Turbo S versions were added to the range before production ceased after only four years.

This 1992 Porsche 968 has the VIN number WPOZZZ96ZNS802268.

With the proviso that we haven’t tried to start or drive this car and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic condition, we think this 1992 Porsche 968 is just a few minor repairs away from being an excellent, low mileage example of a very desirable drivers’ car.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with very little history and no service records.

We know that it was imported new to Japan in 1992.

We know that it was exported from Japan to Hagen in Germany in 2009, and from there it was purchased for the vendor’s collection of static display cars.

Its odometer then read 26,275kms.

Today, it reads 26,304kms.

Exterior

It’s evident from concealed parts of the car (engine bay, door hinges, etc) that this car was originally red and has been resprayed in a shade of dark metallic purple at some point.

It’s also evident that it lived in Japan for most of its life and then in a private collection, because there’s no rust that we can see anywhere and the car has the look and feel of a vehicle that’s been very well cared for.

There are very few dents or bumps of any significance anywhere on the bodywork.

Mostly, the paintwork is good, too, although there are some swirls in places and the car would certainly benefit from a good machine polish.

The lights, trim and badging are generally good as well. So are the wheels, which have only a few chips and scratches to show for their years of use.

The body kit running along the flanks of the car under the doors and front wings has been pushed slightly out of shape and doesn’t quite align properly.

The paint has rubbed off on the edges of the front indicator clusters. There are some chips to the paint on the passenger side wing mirror and on the edges of the doors.

Part of the rubber trim beneath the rear spoiler has been pushed out of its groove

There is a big crack running across the middle of the windscreen.

Interior

The black interior is really very good indeed and appears to be highly original and authentic.

The leather and fabric seats, both front and back, are showing very few signs of age or use.

The door cards are in good condition, as is the headlining.

The dashboard and centre console are solid and undamaged. The carpets and mats are also very good, although the carpet is slightly coming away from the left-hand side of the driver’s footwell.

The rubber trim around the rear screen has frayed and come apart in places. The leather on the gear selector is a little worn.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t driven the vehicle.

Mechanical

In common with many cars from Japan, the undersides are in extremely good condition. Everything looks solid, strong and free of any meaningful corrosion.

The engine is equally impressive, with everything looking clean, dry and in the right place.

History

The car doesn’t come with a service history or any record of work done.

Currently, it only has the paperwork displayed in the photo gallery. We do not have anything else.

Summary

We think this is a very well-preserved example and one that should provide its next owner with many years of motoring pleasure.

If the underlying structure, engine and running gear prove to be as impressive as the rest of this car, then we think the process of recommissioning and repair should more than repay the time and attention it fully deserves to receive from its next owner.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €10,000 - €15,000.
