Background

During the 1980s Porsche had started to make efforts to re-jig their line-up and move away from their signature rear-engined rear-wheel drive offerings. Their efforts started with the 924, but this was a slightly half-baked attempt at a proper sports car.

It wasn’t until 1982, when the 944 came along, that Porsche had a proper front-engined sports car to offer the market. Sitting between the 924 and 911 SC in both price and performance this new car was more of a proper Porsche.

Come 1989 the 944 was starting to become a little long in the tooth so a facelift was undertaken. A more muscular-looking body was wrapped around the powerful 4 cylinder engines on offer. The turbo would retain the original 2.5l instead of the new naturally aspirated 3.0l offering.

Interestingly the 944 Turbo was only offered as a Cabriolet in its final year of production (1991). They were a limited run of 500 cars with only 100 being right-hand drive. This limited production actually makes the 944 Turbo Cabriolet rarer than a Porsche 918 Spyder would you believe?

For a while, these cars have been under-appreciated, but they appear to be trending the right way.

Overview

First hitting the UK roads in August 1991 this 944 Turbo Cabriolet has been lovingly maintained by its previous owners. The current owner acquired the car just before the events of 2020 unfolded but they have loved their time with it, never scrimping on the car's maintenance. It has recently had a full engine service, a transmission service, new belts all round, and a new clutch to name a few major replacement parts.

With a full documented service history and a clean MOT in March 2023 this is a rare Porsche that you really don’t want to miss out on.

Exterior

Presented in a strikingly deep red the exterior of this 944 Turbo Cabriolet is presented in very good condition indeed. As the car is now over 30 years old there are a few isolated, and minor, areas that aren’t ‘factory fresh’ but it is more than presentable already.

All of the panels of this 944 are finished in this very striking red paint. From bumper to bumper this paint is in very good condition with no areas that would require a respray. There are some areas that have started to slightly fade but this is barely noticeable as seen in the pictures, this usually happens to red paint over time but a polish should bring it back to its former glory.

Back in 2015 the original Porsche alloys were refurbished, as the car has since been used for those more special drives, they are still in great condition with no curb damage present. When the current owner acquired the vehicle, they went through and changed all the tyres to a new, matching, set of Toyo Proxes T1-R.

Taking a look at the main attraction of this 944 Turbo Cabriolet, the black fabric roof, we can see that it is in good condition overall. There are a few areas where the fabric has started to wear/age these have been photographed and can be found in the gallery below.

With this being said though, the roof still looks to be waterproof with no watermarks present on the interior headliner.

When the temperature increase, and the factory-fitted air-conditioning isn’t quite fitting the vibe, then all you need to do is lower the roof. With the two included roof keys the electrically operated roof will rise up and neatly fold itself behind the rear seat. When it has completed its operation, you can cover it up neatly with the rare-to-see original tonneau cover. With the roof hidden under the tonneau, and the electric windows down, the exterior look is elevated to another level.

Overall, this 944 Turbo Cabriolet is in very good exterior condition. You should have no problems in picking up this car and displaying it at Porsche Club GB meetings over the summer.

Interior

On the inside, this 944 is in lovely condition indeed. Its monochromatic combination of greys juxtaposes the striking exterior in a beautiful way. Over the past 30 years, the interior has aged beautifully with only a few areas showing their age, but we’ll get to these later.

To begin with, let’s look at the grey leather seats fitted to this car. The driver’s seat has seen the most use over the car's life so there are some areas that are starting to wear. As you can see from the photos the side bolster on this driver’s seat has started to show its age, but importantly, the leather has not torn. Hopefully, this section can be repaired easily. This being said though, these areas of age-related wear do not affect the comfort of these seats. Moving across to the passenger’s seat it is still in very good condition. Experiencing less use, and therefore wear, there aren’t any areas of wear like the driver’s seat. There is a small mark on the side of the seat base that should rub off with a bit of elbow grease.

The two front seats are both electrically operated, these are both reported to work as they should.

In the rear, you’ll find two rather small bucket-style seats that almost look as if they’ve never been used in their life.

Moving through the interior other features such as the carpets and headliner are all in very good condition, especially when you consider the car's age and mileage. Sticking with carpets. The carpets in the boot are in good condition. Its original light grey carpet does have some wear to it, however, this is hidden by the well-fitting black over mat. Also nestled into the boot are the original spare wheel and jack. Taking a closer look at this section of the boot you can see two Porsche original stickers which help show this car hasn’t been involved in a rear-end collision.

Sitting in the driver’s seat you have the best view of the switch gear that adorns the un-cracked dashboard. Along with this well-presented dash, the original clock not only still works, but the LCD hasn’t cracked and leaked its liquid behind the display.

Other buttons across the dash will operate the factory-fitted air-conditioning, which was blowing lovely cold air. There is also a button to operate the electric folding roof, this was tested on the day, and it worked flawlessly once you get the key in the right position.

The current owner has changed the original steering wheel in favour of a smaller, nicer-looking, three-spoke Porsche steering wheel. The original has been stored separately and will come with the car should you wish to change it back.

Other spare parts include a couple of door bin covers that a previous owner purchased with the possible hope of re-dying and fitting them.

You know that you just want to hop inside this Cabriolet and get the wind in your hair. With an interior in very presentable condition, all of your drives will be both comfortable and memorable.

Mechanical

Underneath this 944 looks to be in great condition for its age. A quick visual inspection on the day of the photos revealed no obvious areas of concern. As the car maneuvered around the photoshoot location no oil or other fluids were left on the tarmac.

During the photoshoot, the car was left to idle for a while, just to protect the battery, during this time the engine did not overheat, and you could hear the auxiliary fan kicking in and out keeping it nice and cool.

Upon acquiring the car, the current owner spent several thousands of pounds in making sure that it was running the best it could. This included some of the following work

  • A full engine service with new oil and filters
  • A clutch
  • All the belts have been changed
  • Transmission and diff service
  • Repair to the power steering
  • Cam tower main gasket
  • Cam tower rear gasket
  • Cam tower seal
  • Rear main seal
  • Spigot bearing
  • Crank sensor
  • Rear brake discs
  • Rear pads
  • Hand brake shoes

The only slight hick-up we had during the day was a minor issue when starting the car. On occasion, it would take a couple of attempts to get the starter motor to engage and kick the engine into life. It must be mentioned that although it took a couple of times to click into life, every time the car turned over it started without issue.

After the shoot, the car was taken out on a 10-15 minute drive. During the drive, the car performed near perfectly. The engine pulled well through the lower revs and when the turbo kicked in you could feel it pushing you back into your seat. Over the un-even British roads, the suspension worked well without any worrying knocks or bangs from any corner.

There was a slight vibration from one of the discs under braking at the start of the drive, but after some braking, it started to ease.

History

This Porsche has been well cared for by its previous owners, in total 10 people have had the chance to experience what this 944 Turbo Cabriolet has to offer. With this car, you will be getting a lot of historic and modern paperwork which documents this car's history very nicely. Amongst the paperwork, you’ll find a Certificate of Authenticity supplied by Porsche themselves.

One of the previous owners put together several spreadsheets which help piece together the car's history. Titled General Work, MOT History, Maintenance, and Service Record. All of these documents have been photographed so you can clearly see the amount of care that has gone into the car's past.

Not only does the car come with a lot of invoices, MOTs, and other assorted paperwork. It has also managed to retain its original leather-bound handbook holder. Within this, you’ll find the Guarantee and Maintenance booklet and the 944 drivers manual.

Summary

With only 100 right-hand drive 944 Turbo Cabriolets ever being manufactured by Porsche it is rare to see one come up for sale, let alone one for sale in this condition. The current owner has meticulously been through the running gear of this 944 and made sure the necessary parts have been replaced wherever needed. Guided between £24,000 - £28,000 this 944 Turbo Cabriolet is excellent value for money when you consider other sports cars of the time.

The 944 has been overlooked for the longest time, but recently they have started to gather some momentum as the modern classic Porsche to own. Values should soon start to reflect this as well.

The summer is certainly with us now, so why not get behind the wheel of a rare modern classic?
