Background

Introduced in 1982, the Porsche 944 was meant to bridge the gap between the 924 and the 911 SC. A move away from the admirably stubborn dedication to the rear wheel drive, rear engine set up in the 911, the 944 featured a front mounted engine in various guises which sent power to the rear through an Audi derived rear mounted transaxle for perfect weight balance. Porsche developed the 944 throughout its production run and in 1989 introduced the S2 (S standing for Sport) to take over from the 944 S. The S2 with its 208bhp turned out to be more powerful and faster than the top spec model, the Turbo, something that Porsche quickly realised and rectified by gifting the Turbo with plenty more oomph. This then puts the S2 as one of the most coveted 944s by prospective buyers and enthusiasts and undoubtedly added to the fact that the 944 was the most successful selling sport cars from Porsche since the Boxster and 997 Carrera.

The prices and desire for the 944 has been slowing increasing over the past few years, meaning that now could be the perfect time to buy into the marque before the prices go up any further. Consider then, on top of getting a peerlessly designed and engineered car from one of the world’s most prestigious car manufactures, that you are also buying into an investment that could see a healthy return should the car be in the right condition, and it’s taken care of in the right way, should add to the appeal to take on ownership of a 944 of your own.

Overview

The vehicle presented here to The Market for Auction is a 30-year-old S2, meaning it has the 3.0L 16-valve inline 4, producing 208BHP and all the looks of the 944 Turbo which was the one everyone lusted after. Even with everyone lusting after the Turbo initially, the S2 was much quicker and more powerful than the Turbo at the time of its launch, so this model is one of the most desirable iterations of the 944 model line.

This car has done around 221761 km which is about 137796 miles. This may seem high but to anyone in the know, the higher the mileage on these cars tends to point towards a better condition one. This is due to the all alloy engine and rubber seals and belts deteriorating fast when put into storage, being a Porsche, a true driver’s car, the 944 needed a workout from time to time to keep it nice and healthy. Failing that, it would need regular maintenance and service whilst in storage to ensure nothing failed prematurely.

Exterior

The paintwork on this 944 looks in great condition and from the outside, you’d be forgiven for thinking this car was younger than it is. There are various general wear and tear marks once you get up close and personal with the bodywork, but none of these look serious and we assume they could be touched up at home or sorted for relatively cheap by a professional. All light lenses and trim around the car are in great condition with no hazing or cracks visible or any obvious deterioration of the plastics due to the hotter climate it has spent time in. Other things to mention on the outside would be the wheels which look to be in good condition considering the age of the vehicle, some slight curbing can be found upon inspection and some lacquer peel, however that seems to be localised around the centre caps which we assume could be replaced or spruced up quite easily.

Interior

Moving inside the car and the first thing that catches your eye are those iconic sports seats with ‘Porsche’ emblazoned across the backs in a repeating diagonal style. The half black leather, half grey fabric upholstery has held up exceptionally well in the car’s 30 years and all trim and interior pieces look to be in great condition. The only things that should be pointed out in the cabin seem to be one of the column stalks is missing but the owner has assured that this will be replaced or repaired before its new owner collects the car, the gear knob is looking a little worse for wear but being a high traffic touch point, we’re again sure you could find a replacement easily. If we were being picky the steering wheel could use some leather feed or a re-dyeing, however this is very minor and seeing as it doesn’t have any bits missing or stitching fraying, it’s really a very minor issue.

Underneath the carpet, the metalwork is very fresh indeed, with the car not seeming to have any corrosion possibly from the undercoating and galvanising that Porsche applied from the factory. In the boot area there is a rear load curtain cover and underneath the carpet looks almost new, the spare wheel underneath is missing however. To Summarise for the interior then, it is in great condition and looks very welcoming and typically luxurious from a Porsche, it has to be one of the main attractions for this particular example.

Mechanical

Underneath the 944, as previously mentioned, everything bodywork wise seems to be in fine fettle with no visible rot developing anywhere and all suspension components appearing to be in good condition along with the exhaust system. There is some oil weeping from the brand new fuel pump, along with some oil spray in the right rear wheel arch. Seeing as the part in question is in a vulnerable position in the rear of the car, we would imagine this might be a common issue among owners.

The engine bay however looks to be near immaculate with the strut tower tops looking strong and all lines, leads and cables looking in good condition with no splits, cracks or ruptures to steal power from the mighty inline 4. We assume the battery is faulty which is why the owner now has a new one in the car as part of the sale.

History

Other than the Spanish DGT papers which confirm this as a one owner car, the 944 presented here for auction does not come with any further paperwork, but the current owner has assured The Market that they would provide a title for the car, so it has some documentation to take away with it. Looking over the general condition of the car though, which we would advise if possible, the lack of documentation might not be as bad as initially thought.

Summary

The 944 is rapidly becoming more and more desirable and prices are on the rise, The car you see here we reckon could form the basis of a fantastic investment with little money being needed to get it back to mint condition. The S2 was also one of the most desirable models of the 944 and in theory could command a much higher figure in pristine condition, up there with the Turbo models. This car shows all the signs of having been taken care of and loved by a previous owner and as such should give prospective bidders confidence to bid on this example with the aim of enjoying this classic daily or sporadically. This car however needs to be given a run out from time to time to keep the car firing on all cylinders, we think we speak for all petrolheads when we say that’s not something you’d have to ask us twice to do.

We estimate for this Porsche 944 to reach anywhere between €15,000 - €25,000.
