Background
Introduced in 1982, the Porsche 944 was meant to bridge the gap between the 924 and the 911 SC. A move away from the admirably stubborn dedication to the rear wheel drive, rear engine set up in the 911, the 944 featured a front mounted engine in various guises which sent power to the rear through an Audi derived rear mounted transaxle for perfect weight balance. Porsche developed the 944 throughout its production run and in 1989 introduced the S2 (S standing for Sport) to take over from the 944 S. The S2 with its 208bhp turned out to be more powerful and faster than the top spec model, the Turbo, something that Porsche quickly realised and rectified by gifting the Turbo with plenty more oomph. This then puts the S2 as one of the most coveted 944s by prospective buyers and enthusiasts and undoubtedly added to the fact that the 944 was the most successful selling sport cars from Porsche since the Boxster and 997 Carrera.
The prices and desire for the 944 has been slowing increasing over the past few years, meaning that now could be the perfect time to buy into the marque before the prices go up any further. Consider then, on top of getting a peerlessly designed and engineered car from one of the world’s most prestigious car manufactures, that you are also buying into an investment that could see a healthy return should the car be in the right condition, and it’s taken care of in the right way, should add to the appeal to take on ownership of a 944 of your own.
