Background

The 944 was introduced in 1982 as a faster, more refined, better handling 924 for the Porsche customer who found the smaller car a bit, well, inferior. But the 944 was never, at least not in the early days, just about outright performance because a 0-60mph time of around 8.5 seconds and the nigh-on 140mph top speed were only barely adequate, even back then.

No, the 944 was all about the handling and with perfect 50:50 weight distribution courtesy of a rear transaxle, a well-fettled example still has the potential to embarrass far more exotic machinery, even now.

As a post-1988 MY car, this example is fitted with the 2.7-litre engine. This might only develop 4bhp more than the earlier 2.5-litre but it produces 166 lb/ft of torque, a 10 per cent increase on the smaller engine. This makes the 2.7-litre car much more flexible to drive and, crucially, much faster in mid-range acceleration, which is where it really matters in everyday driving.

Overview

With five recorded owners – two of which appear to be dealers – this 112k Porsche 944 2.7 Lux is finished in Baltic Blue with a classic 1980s Porsche interior.

The car was supplied by Anthony Bowers Classic Cars in Oswestry (tel: 07957 600164) and can be inspected there by appointment. They have maintained the car since the owner bought it and are very happy to give an independent, third-party report on the car’s condition, giving you the reassurance to bid with confidence if you are unable to inspect it in person.

Exterior

The galvanised bodywork is living proof that Porsche was right to lavish so much time and money on rustproofing; it is completely solid and in every way and free of past and present corrosion.

That the stunning Baltic Blue paintwork is completely unmarked is further testament to a period in time when Porsche still built cars with an eye to longevity rather than the bottom line.

Interior

The interior is fabulously period, and reeks of eighties yuppie cool. Almost every surface is finished in a rich burgundy, and is as brash as one of Gordon Gekko’s ties. It is also in utterly fabulous condition, with almost unmarked upholstery, door trim, and carpets.

As a ‘Lux’, the standard equipment includes an electric tilt and removable sunroof, electric seats, windows and mirrors, and a good aftermarket JVC stereo/cd system.

The car is protected with a quality alarm system and a soft, tailored indoor cover (included) helps keep it snug and safe in the garage.

If we were nit-picking, we’d spend a couple of hours re-fitting the boot carpet which has come adrift in a couple of places. We’d also polish out the scratch on the driver’s door window, and perhaps have the rear screen removed and refitted with a new glass seal.

Mechanical

The present owner tells us that “the car drives as it should with no known faults: He goes on to say that it has a “comprehensive service history and every past MOT to substantiate the total mileage of 112,000.”

The cam-belt was changed 15,000 miles ago long with the balance shaft belt. As stated, Anthony Bowers Classic Cars is happy to comment on the car’s condition and will be responsible for putting a new MOT on the car once it has sold.

History

The history folder comes with a thick wad of old bills and invoices, as well as a complete and fully documented service history underpinned by every old MOT.

Summary

The Porsche 944 is currently something of an unloved bargain, which makes no sense to us at all. While a Porsche 911 of a similar age and condition would set you back £25,000 and rising, the reserve on this car is just a quarter of that, which is not a situation that can continue for much longer: the rare 968 Clubsport is rising fast and where the hero car in the range leads, the rest of the range will follow.

Our own Market Trend analysis shows a significant year-on-year rise for 944s, and if that isn’t enough to convince you, the fact that that appreciation curve is climbing ever steeper should.

Which means that now might be one of the few remaining opportunities to get in while the cars are still affordable.
