Background

Much of the Porsche 911's development resulted from the factory's racing programme, and it was the then Group 4 homologation rules, which required 400 road cars to be built, which spurred the development of 'Project 930': the legendary 911 Turbo. In production from April 1975, the Type 930 Turbo married a KKK turbocharger to the 3.0-litre RSR engine, in road trim a combination that delivered 260bhp for a top speed of 250km/h (155mph).

But the Turbo wasn't just about top speed, it was also the best-equipped 911 and amazingly flexible - hence only four speeds in the gearbox - being capable of racing from a standstill to 100mph (160km/h) in 14 seconds.

The Turbo's characteristic flared wheel-arches and 'tea-tray' rear spoiler had already been seen on the Carrera model while the interior was the most luxurious yet seen in a 911, featuring leather upholstery, air conditioning, and electric windows. The Turbo's engine was enlarged to 3.3 litres for 1978, gaining an inter-cooler in the process; power increased to 300bhp and the top speed of what was the fastest-accelerating road car of its day went up to 257km/h (160mph).

More refined than before yet retaining its high-performance edge, the Turbo sold in the thousands, becoming the definitive sports car of its age. When Porsche revealed that the original 911 would be replaced by the new Type 964 in 1990, dealer stocks of the existing Turbo model sold out overnight.

Overview

This 1981 LHD manual Porsche (930) 911 Turbo seems to us to be in very fine overall condition and presents extremely well from every angle.

The chassis number is WP0ZZZ93ZBS000578.

The odometer reads 180,537 kms.

The car comes with no history or service records beyond whatever documentation is shown in the gallery.

The vendor, a classic car specialist, describes the car as follows.

“This is a fully original Porsche 911 3.3 Turbo (930), with four-speed gearbox.

This Porsche 930 Turbo is a European version with 300hp, matching numbers and well-equipped, as it should be for a 911 Turbo: sunroof, air conditioning, 16" Fuchs wheels, Turbo spoiler front and rear, rear wiper, turbo seats, fog lights and also dashboard dials with white background, a rather rare option.

The colour combination - Grand Prix white with black leather interior - looks stunning on this classic Porsche.

Driving this special Porsche 930 is as amazing as its looks. The massive torque explosion remains an unforgettable experience!

In first gear the car is capable of 80 km/h, 2nd reaches to 140km/h...

It is the ultimate way of driving a classic air-cooled Porsche.

This particular car has always remained original. No engine or body modifications.

The car has been restored, with new paintwork and rebuilt engine and transmission.

It is in great condition, ready to hit the road, and looks like it did when it left the factory.”

Exterior

The Grand-Prix White paintwork looks pretty much immaculate.

The bodywork is largely devoid of any dinks, dents or creases of any significance that we can see and the finish is bright, shiny and vibrant.

The panel gaps and shut lines are consistent and even.

There are one of two tiny chips to the paint in the usual places – front valance, sills, wheel-arches, the leading edges of the doors and bonnet – but far fewer than you might normally expect to find on a car of this vintage.

The lights, lenses and badging all seem to be fine, as does most of the exterior trim.

The sunroof seems to be in decent working order.

The wheels are in excellent condition and the tyres looks to have plenty of life left in them.

Overall, it’s a very good-looking car indeed.

Interior

The interior of the car looks to be entirely original, authentic and with a charming patina that honestly reflects its age and use.

The black leather upholstery is in broadly good condition.

The driver’s seat, unsurprisingly, is showing the most signs of wear and has a level of shine and creasing that suggests that this car’s owners were all keen drivers – as indeed they should be in such an iconic machine.

There are some deep creases and cracks to the side bolster on the driver’s seat but we’re of the opinion that a professional leather restorer could work wonders on it.

The passenger seat and rear seats are significantly less worn, save for the odd scratch here and there.

The door cards are OK, if a little discoloured and faded in places, and the carpets and mats have survived well.

The headlining is a little discoloured and shabby and there are some scratches and scuffs on sections of the dashboard, notably near the slot for the radio (which is not present).

As far as we’re aware, all dials, switches, knobs, levers and instruments do what they’re supposed to do.

The rubber gaiter on the gear lever has lifted up and is loose.

Mechanical

Aside from a couple of spots of what seems to be entirely superficial rust dust, the undersides of the car appear to have a good deal of structural integrity.

The engine and engine bay are clean, dry and everything appears to be in its right and proper place.

History

The car doesn’t come with any service records, history or documentation beyond what is shown in the gallery section.

Summary

This primarily original and authentic 930 Turbo is an excellent example of one of the most important, influential and iconic performance cars ever made.

We confidently offer this splendid car for auction with an estimate of between €90,000 - €130,000.
