Background

When the Porsche 928 was first launched in 1978, engineering aficionados were quietly amazed, automotive journalists applauded, car designers wept salty tears of pure envy and, of course, 911 fanatics were appalled.

Then, it looked like nothing we’d seen before. Now, it looks like nothing we’ve seen since.

The 928 was, and is, an engineering, design, performance and usability masterclass.

Arguably, only McLaren has come close to simultaneously delivering such a step change across all four of those tick boxes in the intervening years.

The Porsche 928 GTS was the final word in the 928 line-up of ground-breaking grand tourers, with the mighty 345bhp V8 5.4-litre 32 valve DOHC GTS engine under the bonnet and sublime handling, courtesy of 50:50 weight distribution.

Even today, a 928 GTS is a very fast and powerful car, capable of taking you across continents, time zones and cultures with power in reserve and a great deal of style and panache.

But it is also practical, usable and so well engineered, even by Porsche’s lofty standards, that it’s as comfortable thundering down an Autobahn as it is going to your local shops.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with no history or service records.

We understand that the car entered the vendor’s collection of static display vehicles in 2012.

It is wearing a Swiss ‘CH’ sticker.

With the proviso that we haven’t tried to drive this vehicle and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic condition, we think this 1995 Porsche 928 GTS is in pretty much time-warp condition for its age and is a very good example of a ground-breaking model from a legendary manufacturer.

Exterior

The bodywork is in fine condition - even for the car’s low kilometres, let alone its age.

The panels are straight and even, and the panel gaps and shut lines seem consistent and crisp.

The metallic brown paint finish has retained most of its shine and lustre.

Overall, the outside of this car is in excellent condition, with the lights, lenses, badging and all exterior fixtures and fittings looking really very impressive indeed.

The wheels are seemingly untroubled either by time or use (and the locking nut for the wheels is inside the car).

There are one or two scratches and scuffs on the passenger-side front wing, a scuff below the rear light cluster on the same side and a scratch by the filler cap.

A ‘Porsche’ badge is missing from above the side indicator on the driver’s side.

Interior

The interior is in the same very impressive condition as the interior.

The indulgent and luxurious cream leather upholstery seems entirely in keeping with the car’s class, era and the presence of a Barry White tape in the cassette player.

The headlining, door cards and brown carpets are all good, but could do with being cleaned.

The luggage area is in fine order and contains a number of spare Porsche parts including various engine and ancillary belts.

We can’t vouch for the full functionality of the car’s many toggles, stops, levers, switches, dials, buttons, etc, as we haven’t tried to drive the vehicle.

Mechanical

Everything in the engine bay is in its right and proper place and entirely as you’d expect to find in a car with such a low number of kilometres on the clock.

Unsurprisingly, the car’s undersides seem to have plenty of structural integrity.

History

This car doesn’t come with any history or service records.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

None of the paperwork shown in the gallery in any way constitutes any kind of licensing or registration certification.

Summary

Provided, of course, that the engine, electrics and mechanicals are as exceptional as the rest of this apparently very solid and well-preserved car, we think this fine example of a 928 GTS is almost certainly one of the best out there.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €30,000 - €60,000.
