Background

When the Porsche 928 was first launched in 1978, engineering aficionados were quietly amazed, automotive journalists applauded, car designers wept salty tears of pure envy and, of course, 911 fanatics were appalled.

Then, it looked like nothing we’d seen before. Now, it looks like nothing we’ve seen since.

The 928 was, and is, an engineering, design, performance and usability masterclass.

Arguably, only McLaren has come close to simultaneously delivering such a step change across all four of those tick boxes in the intervening years.

The Porsche 928 GTS was the final word in the 928 line-up of ground-breaking grand tourers, with the mighty 345bhp V8 5.4-litre 32 valve DOHC GTS engine under the bonnet and sublime handling, courtesy of 50:50 weight distribution.

Even today, a 928 GTS is a very fast and powerful car, capable of taking you across continents, time zones and cultures with power in reserve and a great deal of style and panache.

But it is also practical, usable and so well engineered, even by Porsche’s lofty standards, that it’s as comfortable thundering down an Autobahn as it is going to your local shops.

This 1993 Porsche 928 GTS is a LHD auto version and has covered just 11,467 kms.

VIN: WPOZZZ92ZPS800536.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with no history or service records.

We understand that the car entered the vendor’s collection of static display vehicles in 2012.

With the proviso that we haven’t tried to drive this vehicle and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic condition, we think this 1993 Porsche 928 GTS is in very good condition for its age and is an excellent example of a ground-breaking model from a legendary manufacturer.

Exterior

The bodywork is in fine overall condition and is far more a reflection of the car’s low kilometres than its age.

The panels are straight and even, and the panel gaps and shut lines seem consistent and crisp.

The metallic black paint finish has retained plenty of shine and lustre.

Overall, the outside of this car is in excellent condition, with the lights, lenses, badging and all exterior fixtures and fittings looking really very impressive indeed.

We noticed that the car seems to have more than its fair share when it comes to badges – there are Porsche crests on the bonnet, the sides, and two at the back.

There’s also a lot of ‘928 GTS’ badging, or at least more than would seem standard.

The wheels are seemingly untroubled either by time or use.

There is a long scratch along the passenger door and a rather smaller one under the lower front light cluster on the driver’s side.

There are numerous small stone chip around the ‘nose’ of the car and some scuffs and scrapes on the door edges and on the grey plastic front valance.

Interior

The very vibrant interior is a symphony of red leather and carpets – all of it in remarkably good condition.

The red leather seats are showing only minimal creasing or signs of wear, front and back, and the leather on the door cards and dashboard and centre console surrounds is also very good.

The headlining looks to be in good order, as does the rear luggage area, bar some untidiness.

The car’s dark grey mats are also good.

The car’s wood and veneers are rich and glossy.

We can’t vouch for the full functionality of the car’s many toggles, stops, levers, switches, dials, buttons, etc, as we haven’t tried to drive the vehicle.

Mechanical

Everything in the engine bay is in its right and proper place and entirely as you’d expect to find in a car with such a low number of kilometres on the clock.

The car’s undersides seem to have plenty of structural integrity.

History

This car doesn’t come with any history or service records.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

None of the paperwork shown in the gallery (which are photocopies) in any way constitutes any kind of licensing or registration certification.

Summary

Provided, of course, that the engine, electrics and mechanicals are as good as the rest of this apparently very solid and well-preserved car, we think this fine, low-kilometres example of a 928 GTS is probably one of the best out there.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €30,000 - €40,000.
