Background

Introduced in 1976 and in production until 1988, the 924 was Porsche’s first front engined, rear wheel drive car to enter the market.

Developed in conjunction with VW, it was built at an ex-NSU factory in Stuttgart and the standard 924 used a VW derived 4-cylinder, the block taken from the Audi 100 but fitted with a Porsche designed head and when fitted with Bosch K-Jet Tronic injection made 95 bhp. It has been unfairly said it used a VW van engine, in reality the block was shared but little else.

But..this is not true of the 'S', just as we have here, however - the block and everything else was entirely Porsche!

It was the ideal entry level Porsche, its straight line performance was good and with its rear transaxle gearbox had perfect weight distribution for outstanding handling, making it a real drivers car. It was so popular that it even remained on sale alongside its replacement, the 944.

Overview

Registered in 1987, this is a very late manual example, so benefits from the improvements Porsche made during the years of production, and has covered only 58,500 miles. It was bought from Waldron in Canterbury who also added Identicar window security etching for an extra £34.50.

This car’s paperwork shows it has been in constant light use throughout its life with regular MOT passes from an owner who kept good records, including an expenditure record showing what its annual maintenance cost (great for future buyers to see and know how well it was maintained, but not the sort of document we would recommend leaving where a significant other might find it!)

Most recently it had a 111 point health and geometry check from Porsche Centre Mid Sussex in December 2020.

Exterior

Normally the bright Guards Red paint work would be the attention grabber, but not here. The ‘80s inspired black and gold vinyl stripes were added in September (the bonnet decals were actually removed and replaced when it was machine polished in October) really make the car stand out from the crowd. The paint is generally very good with no dings and very few marks, just some on the passenger mirror, door sills from shoes and the odd rare stone chip. There is a scrape to the passenger door decal and a stone chip to the windscreen of the sort that can be repaired free under insurance, and the passenger side indicator repeater is slightly loose.

The alloy wheels are unmarked and were fitted with new Pirelli Cinturato 195/65/15 tyres in August 2020.

It still has its original dealer number plates and window sticker which is a very desirable touch, and there is an additional lock on the drivers side.

Interior

The tan interior is in excellent condition throughout. The bucket seats, with one piece backs, look amazing and appear little used and we’d lay money on the rear seats having never been sat in. With the exception of some marks in the drivers foot well the light carpets are superb, and protected by rather lovely brown and white floor mats.

The leather steering wheel and gear knob are in very nice shape with just a couple of marks on the surface and the dashboard and instruments are all excellent.

In the dash, a new Blaupunkt Alicante retro look radio was professionally installed in August this year, replacing the original Panasonic and a Smiths dashboard clock and holder were added in September.

The car has electric windows, electric passenger mirror and has a factory electric sunroof installed.

Mechanical

The history highlights show the level of detail the last owner went to in looking after this car. The inner arch dirt trap was cleaned out in 2017 the the suspension was fully overhauled with new parts fitted, old parts sandblasted and painted and new coil overs this year.

The receipts show lots of work under the car and engine bay, replacing any oil seal that began to weep and new bushes at various times. In short, the under side of this car is as clean as you could hope for.

History

Over the years the 924 has been fastidiously maintained, with things being changed as needed. In 2019 there were new clutch slave and pipes, a list of small items seen to, and a major service - covered in the 11 page receipt in 2017. The owner has kept on top of every minor problem that many would live with, and this summer it has had an no expense spared mechanical make-over.

In July the car had a major overhaul seeing the new Spax coilovers (costing £688), brake pipes replaced and the suspension sandblasted/rust proofed/painted and new outer ball joints fitted. Under the bonnet the timing belt was replaced - which was done properly as it also enjoyed a new water pump, idler pulleys and the auxiliary belts, which cost £600 in labour, not including parts supplied by the owner.

A custom built stainless steel manifold back sports exhaust was made and fitted back in May at a cost of £1440, making the car look, sound and go the way you want it to.

Around this time work began on the service and maintenance program, replacing the fuel pump and much of the pipework, radiator pipes, new inlet manifold gaskets, camshaft and other oil seals, various axle carrier bushes, axle spring plates, support mounts and wheel bearings.

Summary

There are quite a few cheap and well used 924s a the bottom end of the classifieds. This is as far from those as its possible to get. With all Porsche prices constantly climbing good 924s are creeping out of the affordable sports car category and one with this mileage, condition and service history will be spearheading that ascent.

It’s in extremely good condition. There is little to do with this car other than turn the key and enjoy the famously perfectly balanced handling.

We estimate for this Porsche 924 to reach anywhere between £15,000 - £20,000.
