Background

The 901/22 911R engine is, quite simply, an insane machine. Constructed in 1967, this is one of the most powerful engines ever fitted to the 911 during its heyday. The engine itself is a 2-liter, Type 916 air-cooled four-stroke, twin cam boxer flat-six. It produces roughly 210hp.

Overview

Now, on to the more technical stuff. Construction materials are as follows: magnesium alloy crank case, 118mm bore spacing, cast-iron cylinder liners coated with fins for air cooling, aluminum alloy head with hemispherical combustion chamber, forged steel crankshaft with 8 plain main bearings, and titanium connecting rods. The engine also has 2 Weber 46 IDA 3C carburetors. Ignition is electronic single spark, with Bosch coils, and Bendix fuel pumps, and since this is a 901/22 example, it also features Magnetti Marelli twin plugs per cylinder. Be sure to notice the 12 plugs, 2 per cylinder, in the photographs.

Exterior

This example is pristine. All the numbers around the machine are easily visible. It has spent most of its time sealed inside a crate, and that protective storage is abundantly apparent when examining the engine for flaws of which there are few if any.

Interior

As this is an engine, there is nothing to state about an interior. Onwards.

History

Perhaps as equally well kept as the engine are the documents surrounding it. This engine has an excellent book of records. Not only is this engine a rare find, but it has also passed through the hands of a few notable people as well. This engine at one time belonged to Heinz Bade, a notable engineer for famous Porsche driver, Bruce Jennings. Jennings was an immensely successful SCCA racer who often beat factory teams with his modified Porsche speedsters. He raced for 35 years and won over 200 races. Considering the engine was purchased from Heinz, this engine was likely a back up in case Jennings ever had to swap his regular engine out while competing. The engine remained stored in its crate after being purchased from Bade and has remained that way since being purchased by the current seller.

Summary

Well, what a unique item we have here. This engine was immensely powerful for its time and has been kept in excellent condition. This engine is perfect for several different scenarios. Whether it be a swap, custom build, base to a coffee table, or whatever else, this engine has a fantastic story surrounding it and is beyond ready to serve a new owner.
